nullcipher··on Indieweb and self-hosting my own space
What is fully managed in this context? Using SaaS?
nullcipher··on Indieweb and self-hosting my own space
They are around since 2014 - https://www.cloudron.io/imprint.html . So, yeah, around for more than most google products :-P
nullcipher··on The ugly story of how corporate America convinced us to spend so much on water
In germany, you have to buy water in all restaurants. This results in purchasing plastic mineral water bottles. Sad state of things.
nullcipher··on At Xamarin I left every day at 5pm
Keep up! These days the trend has changed. We have gone the other end now. "I work from 10am and start chilling out at 2pm and make much more money than before." (this is what they say, but not what they do)

> If all-nighters will make you rich, by all means, pull em. And then once you're rich, STOP.

What is rich? 100k? 5m? 100m? I know what your answer will be: "you decide what is rich". Well, maybe the people who work a lot want to be a lot more rich than you.

I doubt anyone will trade becoming rich for meeting mysterious strangers at bars and partying at night. Both these things involve drinking, and really it's just a drug out of misery.

Ultimately, your gripe is not that you worked a lot but just that you didn't make money out of it. Now, you are just fantasizing and romanticizing being penniless (without ever being in such a situation).

nullcipher··on Tell HN: The issues of Twitter are not a technical problem to solve
> It's not like Twitter's creators maliciously set out to become the flaming hellscape it is now. It responded to market forces and user behavior.

"I didn't tear down the rainforest, the markforces made me"

"I didn't cause global warming, I was merely responding to market forces"

Please. They wanted profits and made the world a worse place. Don't condone such behavior.

nullcipher··on IKEA’s Crimes Against Cartography
I am surprised by this statement. I have used IKEA stuff for over 20 years, hardly anything is abysmal. Which region/country are you talking about? When you buy a mattress/bed, do you buy the lowest end? IKEA has good quality stuff if you are willing to pay a bit more (but not outrageous prices).
nullcipher··on IKEA’s Crimes Against Cartography
> IKEA is the McDonald’s of housewares

That's pretty far out. McDonald's is not fit for any home, heck even any human. IKEA sells good stuff . They are functional and look OK. It's disgraceful to compare it to McDonald's food.

nullcipher··on Normalising Layoffs/Firing
> Some how firing/laying-off has been trivialised.

Yup. Just like we have trivialized climate change, consumerism, mass wastage :-( Ah, capitalism. The devil is in the details.

nullcipher··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Sad sad day
nullcipher··on Cloudflare had a partial outage
DNS API failing with 500
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Is your company giving you a holiday for Juneteenth?
Why is this question asked? Any context?
nullcipher··on Ubuntu Core 22 is now available – optimised for IoT and embedded devices
Is that not for desktops? What is the alternative for servers?
nullcipher··on Ubuntu Core 22 is now available – optimised for IoT and embedded devices
it's reviled because nobody wants to learn yet another deployment tool. apt has been reliable enough for installing packages and good enough UX that people can't be bothered
nullcipher··on Launch HN: Mintlify (YC W22) – Maintainable documentation for software teams
I think source available is the future!
nullcipher··on Launch HN: Mintlify (YC W22) – Maintainable documentation for software teams
The opening line says "Open source" , but they aren't. Source available is the correct term.
nullcipher··on The Worst Perk at Google
I read somewhere this is all tied to some arcane reasoning from the depression era. Does anyone know it's history?
nullcipher··on Show HN: SetOps – Run containers, databases and more in your own AWS account
Heh, I haven't even heard of any of those alternatives! Thanks for the list.
nullcipher··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
self hosting doesn't always mean opensource. could be people wanting to have control of their data. there are many closed source self hosting apps - emby, plex, confluence/jira, teamspeak, filerun to name a few.
nullcipher··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
If you are referring to sandstorm, kentonv (founder of sandstorm) has made some great points, if you scroll up.
nullcipher··on Show HN: Umbrel – A personal server OS for self-hosting
Cloudron is also source available - https://git.cloudron.io

why is there so much crypto stuff? Probably me but by default I don't trust things that are crypto related.
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Any SaaS ideas out there?
I said clone and not reverse engineer
nullcipher··on Rust Is Hard, Or: The Misery of Mainstream Programming
Unpopular opinion: I find rust code unreadable. And I consider myself a polyglot. I am sure all those symbols have a special meaning but it's like perl to me. Just throw some random special characters and they all mean something.
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Any SaaS ideas out there?
Any SaaS that you use is a good idea to clone
nullcipher··on Without Systemd
what's wrong with systemd-resolved?
nullcipher··on Docker acquires Tilt
Thanks! Looks like I got their direction completely opposite :-)
nullcipher··on Docker acquires Tilt
I thought Docker was moving away from developer tools. What is the direction the Docker company is headed? Does anyone know?
nullcipher··on Next.js Layouts RFC: Nested routes and layouts, designed for Server Components
"irrationally excited" - what does this phrase mean? that there is no basis for your excitement? sounds so cheesy
nullcipher··on “What if it changes?”
