I really wish curl had a --pretty-json option.
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Is it possible to run your own mail server for personal use?
Surely you mean SSL (as in TLS) ? SASL is something else.
nullcipher··on CVE-2016-5696 and its effects on Tor
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/75ff39ccc1bd5d3c455... is the patch. Linus is credited with the suggestion.
nullcipher··on Moving 12 years of email from GMail to FastMail
Try https://cloudron.io. They have SOGo and ownCloud which have pretty decent UIs for contacts. Rainloop for mail.
nullcipher··on Automattic open sources Simplenote
Are simperium and simplenote related? I am confused. Both are by auttomatic it seems.

Edit: looks like simperium is some data stashing service (like firebase?). And simplenote is an app built on top of simperium. Did I get that right?

White text is really hard to read.
nullcipher··on Losing our business – we didn’t see it coming
Why do companies wait till the dying moments before informing employees? I have seen many articles now which read like 'we went to back to the drawing board to realize that we have to close down in 2 days. Our bank was empty'. Is this just dramatization? I cannot believe people can run business without something so basic. Like paratroopers jumping out of an aeroplane and then saying 'we checked before hitting the ground, only to realize we had no parachutes'.
nullcipher··on Remove Firefox Hello from FF49
They also make it very hard to run the sync server on your own :(
nullcipher··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
Parent comment gave screenshots and claimed things are copied. I am also giving two screenshots and telling you that those are copied. What is the point I am missing?

Other than the white color, they actually look different to me. That said, I can show you two editors which look completely alike. I hope you feel the same about them.

Imagine if I said: Atom is such a rip off and the sublime guy must be feeling that GitHub is lazy and a thief. I wonder if GitHub compensated the sublime author who is a small indie dev!

Totally agree. I don't get this either.

If someone copies my software work, I don't go around calling them lazy. Even I spent all my weekends on this lovely piece of code, only for someone else to "steal" it.

nullcipher··on Upthere raises $77M to put a new spin on personal cloud storage
So this competes with Dropbox/ownCloud?

I don't know if he actually said that but isn't all innovation incremental? I understand he put his heart and soul into it, but there has been tons of people who have worked equally hard before him to get to where he got (Apple itself copied it's UI from Xerox). Apple has also blatantly copied and consumed many companies in the past.

There is so much code copied around these days. This is all just the way it is and how we have decided to move ahead as a society. Making judgments on others is uncalled for.

Try cloudron.io. It's exactly what you are looking for wrt app updates. You can make custom apps and not just from the store. All apps are on a single server as well (and not about "scale")

Disclaimer: managed cloudron customer (I have not used the selfhosted option).

nullcipher··on GitLab 8.10 Released with Wildcard Branch Protection and Manual Actions for CI
I want to love gitlab but it's very slow on small machines (2gb). Worse is that they insist on this omnibus stuff which is all great if you have time on your hands. Any reason gitlab does not auto update?
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
Is this actually a side project? That's a lot of work you have done there for a side project.
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Anyone else having no email deliver with SendGrid?
You mean SES?
nullcipher··on Ask HN: What revenue generating side projects do full-time employees here have?
Very impressive. What is stopping you from working on the product full time?
nullcipher··on Ask HN: What revenue generating side projects do full-time employees here have?
I think the commenters are jumping to conclusion that OPs profit = 1.1M - 100k. Most of these apps have a big running cost and the profit is not so much as one imagines. Otherwise, OP won't be gainfully employed.
nullcipher··on Ask HN: Laptop that doesn't suck
I highly recommend Lenovo carbon X1/3
