Touch ID is disabled via corporate policy. Locking the screen would result in many minutes of reconnecting to VPNs and setting up sessions.

They are very fast if you walk away for a second.

Smashing keyboard is great fun.

One of my kids new favorite thing is to sneak into office and stay hidden. Usually I notice right away, but not always.

Ages ago, at a Big Data center. They stopped take your kid to work day for IT department.

Apparently large bright red button and 3 year olds don’t mix.

Much fun was not had.

Some people advocate for authorities to have less power over others.

It makes Biden look bad.

If the issue had gotten full press coverage if might have flipped some states.

It’s also a reminder that tech companies can now decide elections. Angry denial is easier then rational thought.

It’s half a joke. Think men in tights. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k4v8BVKlAfM

But also curious of the bulb can be removed without affecting the integrity.

nullserver··on 20-Minute Neighborhoods
I’m a big beefy man. Lived in a bad area. Got the meanest looking dog. A few times that dog definitely stopped things from escalating.

My daughters get lots of lectures on the topic of having a dog or being with a group.

My oldest adult daughter kept thinking I was stupid and paranoid.

Until a group of men tried to force her into a van. So yeah...

nullserver··on 20-Minute Neighborhoods
Have a pair of uncommon disease.

Between them, I was losing my mind.

Was very close to being on the street when I finally got a correct diagnosis. Got treatment, and my mind cleared up. It wasn’t a mental condition, but every doctor wanted to treat it that way.

This was with great insurance and lots of money. Doctors just don’t like complex cases.

Lot of heavy containers that aren’t being used at the moment.

Snip snip.

Just cut the tip off.

And 70 years later the radiation levels would be getting back to normal.

Was at NY startup for awhile. The open bigotry toward white males was off the charts. You had to openly be something other then straight to get a break. Got out of there as fast I can, but this seems to becoming more acceptable.
nullserver··on In January, there were more real-estate agents than homes for sale in the U.S.
I’m trying to move to a family to a new area. The only Rental homes available are through a mega corp. Apartments are all 2 bedroom. Don’t want an apartment anyway. Airbnb are insane once you add fees.

Too move we’re left with living in a hotel until something opens up.

It’s also extremely productive.

Management always thinks a new web report / dashboard will solve all the problems.

Team then spends a week or month building said report into system.

Only to find that it doesn’t help anything. Six months of iterations later it’s correct and useful.

Or have someone build a one off report in excel. Iterate a few times that afternoon until it’s correct. Then it’s handed off to developers. Avoiding months of rework.

nullserver··on Ask HN: How to build empathy?
Be mindful of how far you go with this. If they have empathy they will feel bad. Some people absolutely will take advantage of this to control them.
nullserver··on Ask HN: How to build empathy?
Can confirm. Was very empathetic towards others.

Repeated tragedies, pain and abuse can make you lose most or even all empathy. Even as an adult.

I have some back now, but nothing like I used to be.

Someone at work was very sad the other day, and I actually felt a little bad for them. First time in several years I felt anything at all. Hopefully get more back.

nullserver··on Amazon S3 Object Lambda
Bingo. I’ve had to move a companies entire platform multiple times because of similar issues. I want boring on infrastructure.

Google also has a trust problem. As in they lose interest in things quickly.

I would only consider them if I need a massive scale of something they are cheaper on, that can quickly be migrated elsewhere.

nullserver··on Ask HN: What should a Principal Front end Engineer do?
I was a recent hire at company. I complained to VP I didn’t have enough to do. I didn’t have a free moment for years after that.
nullserver··on Ask HN: What should a Principal Front end Engineer do?
Discover what the companies pain points are. What the customers pain points are. What the blockers are.

Is there any elephants in the room being ignored?

It’s also quite possible they just wanted a feature jock that won’t mess things up. Perhaps that’s what is actually needed.

nullserver··on “When the entire household goes to bed, I do curl development for 2 more hours.”
Did that for several years. Basically a 36 hour schedule. Was awesome. Having a family put a stop to that.
nullserver··on How to deal with difficult people on software projects
Worked in an environment were anything vague in ticket/story would cause team to reject considering it.

At first I was horrified at this. “You can’t tell the boss no!”

Six months later I had to admit it was by far the most productive team I had or have ever been on.

20 years ago, Now and then someone would make a fuss about hard drives.

Specifically master and slave drives.

Wasn’t a common complaint and was treated with eye rolls. Maybe others had different experiences.

Last few years there has been a dramatic change in fringe groups becoming the masters of speech.

At least for those outside the Bay Area.

nullserver··on FreeBSD 13.0 – Full Desktop Experience
Slackware. Constantly trying to install things managing dependencies breaking the entire system starting from scratch etc.

All I really wanted at the time was a Photoshop clone (GIMP). Broke high schooler that didn’t want to pirate.

nullserver··on FreeBSD 13.0 – Full Desktop Experience
I miss when vim was my full IDE. But on a large project, I could not it keep it from thrashing the system while indexing.
nullserver··on FreeBSD 13.0 – Full Desktop Experience
Got a massive jump start to my career by spending high school recompiling X11 and such endlessly.

I have much gratitude for how much I learned. Apple had made great money in my desire to never do that again.
