nullserver··on Docker Raises $23M
So 1/4 to 3/4 of a million per year in salary.

Plus disrupting all the developers.

So far every large scale implementation i have seen has cost the developers a year in productivity.

nullserver··on Moderation in Infrastructure
Much of American constitution idea were conceived by 17th century British hipsters.

nullserver··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
Perhaps your not the target audience.

My wife has one, absolutely loves it. Never ending supply of trinkets and gifts for people. Keeps her busy.

Not cheap, but a lot cheaper then random shopping trips.

So she’s happy, and my wallet is mostly happy.

She’s not remotely technical. That she can operate it means they did something right.

nullserver··on Ask HN: Is startup PTSD real and possible?
Fade yes. But it can be Shocking how something fairly minor will happen and instantly your back in the middle of your worst possible nightmare.
nullserver··on Ask HN: Is startup PTSD real and possible?
Have diagnosed PTSD from actual physically and emotional abuse trauma.

Startup / any company stress can any easily rival anything, if you let it.

A project needs 2 years and a team of 10, but your told to get done in a week solo while being pulled off task constantly.

Yea that can break you bad. It’s basically a prison of the mind, you can walk away at any point but you have convinced yourself you can’t.

nullserver··on The demise and potential revival of the American chestnut
This is a core reason many are freaked out by too much government.

If a company screws up. It goes out of business. Others will take its place. If a government screws up, oh well.

Knew a guy at Disney who noticed a problematic default value in a catalog application. He dropped an f-bomb while discussing its With higher ups.

Well turns out you don’t use that language at Disney. Database problem got shelved.

Few months later a very angry person called up about the multiple pallets of catalogs sitting in his front yard.

nullserver··on Red Flags I Saw While Doing 60 Technical Interviews in 30 Days
Fair point. I liken it to going to the bar and waking up in Vegas with a ring on your finger and a stranger in your bed.

It’s probably your fault, but it’s still a huge WTF just happened moment

nullserver··on What We Can Learn from Japanese Prefab Homes
Idea is that actually building a house isn’t a big deal. It’s mostly the prep work for the land.

So prefab only gets you so much.

nullserver··on Red Flags I Saw While Doing 60 Technical Interviews in 30 Days
I got an offer from a place (hot startup)that I wasn’t really interested in. Had a call to talk about it, see if I might be into. Oh can you talk to so and so, hey can we do a coding exercises really quick, hey can you chat with founder really quick.

3 days from hearing about company, I had an offer.

Then was being pestered about background check.

Wait, how did I get to this point? I wasn’t even really interested.

Few days later offer was withdrawn since I hadn’t completed paperwork.

Overall I’m glad I didn’t accept, they clearly had a very inflated opinion of themselves and how eager everyone would be to join.

nullserver··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
This is why I don’t work with recruiters any more.
nullserver··on What We Can Learn from Japanese Prefab Homes
Isn’t the major issue with Prefab everything else?

nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Growing up in Church, not lying was a big issue. 10 Commandment and all. Caused a lot of heartache for a lot of people. Met lots of missionaries who Preached in extremely bad countries and situations.

Quite annoyed to find out it was a translation issue.

You don’t lie then testify against people. Which is a highly specific and malicious sort of lie.

nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Big one for me is having small children and no one that can look after them I die.

Thought of them going into state care is quite motivating.

nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
It’s grim, but bridge jumpers that actually survive will often speak about how the unsolvable and overwhelming problems change a moment after stepping off bridge. As in how losing that job doesn’t seem so bad now.
nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Not being Murdered is one level.

Did you do the dishes is another.

Have kids. Did you eat chocolate bar? No!!!! So how did the chocolate get all over your face?

nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
It can.

If it’s meant to hurt. Then that’s a bad person.

Otherwise it’s a personality flaw that needs to be addressed. Like the “pull my finger uncle”

It’s very troublesome regardless.

nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Some people lie like they breathe, it’s automatic, and doesn’t have any meaning. It’s not meant to be malicious.
nullserver··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Got to deathbed (series of strokes) etc. Then had the poor grace to get better, sort of.

Made sure to say what I wanted to kids, (best I could). Reached out to ones that I wanted to.

The experience definitely changes perspective. Spending time with loved ones is far more important. Work is far less, except when I need a break from loved ones.

I really stopped giving any sort of sh*t what anyone thought. So I’m much less afraid to call it like I see it.

nullserver··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it
Disease management.

Think about AIDS of other STDs without modern medicine.

Forcing one partner for life is way to deal with it.

Other customs involving the “unclean” are equivalent to days social distancing.

Homeschool.
nullserver··on The Kilobyte’s Gambit
Was extremely good at 12. But my dad who thought himself good stopped playing after I won a game by taking everything and losing none. I recall seeking so many possibilities, now I stink at it.
nullserver··on Divorce rate cut in half for couples who discussed relationship movies (2014)
You should say no to a purchase.

Wife and kids will all melt down if you say no. The last meltdown ruined a weekend.

The purchase isn’t that big a deal. But it’ll make other important bills late. But if you say yes, it’ll encourage the behavior. But you will also have a few days of peace.

Knowing the right thing to do, and having the energy and will power to follow through are very different things.

nullserver··on Why is electricity so hard to understand? (1989)
It’s easy to understand, just grab some metal wires and a battery and

Abstract concepts that you can’t touch or see are hard.

Pineapples used to be rented for parties.

It’s why a lot old decorations had so many in it.

If kids don’t show up 50% of the time and the mom doesn’t care, and the Dad is long gone. Kids friends think learning makes you into a sell out.

Money isn’t going to solve that.
