nullserver··on Ask HN: Which books made you the most money?
Lol. 20k.

I was a competent programmer and a Linux user, but system stuff always seemed like black magic.

With this book I was able to tackle much harder problems

nullserver··on Ask HN: Which books made you the most money?
Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment

Read through it, worked many of the examples. Had a 20 bump in salary.

nullserver··on Rent controls have split housing in Berlin into two distinct markets
Parents city decided to rent control all the mobile home parks. They changed there mind after thousands of people received eviction notices.

Owners would rather let the land sit empty then deal with the nightmare it would create.

HAML and coffeescript.

Browser support and consistency got a lot better.

JavaScript was a minefield of compatibility problems. Many intentional, cough: Microsoft.

Jquery was awesome because it dealt with most of that

nullserver··on If you miss an Apple Card payment, Apple disables all your Apple accounts
Mine is prepaid.

One day I got a text that my balance was low. As I picked up my phone I got another saying balance was 0. While I was opening the app to add funds I got another text saying my service would be turned off if I didn’t pay.

While on the confirm payment screen my power went out.

All happened in about 10 seconds.

Victim blaming?

So you think any of the resized how absurdly high market rates can get.

nullserver··on If you miss an Apple Card payment, Apple disables all your Apple accounts
Flew to another country once, with a newborn baby. Flight attendant was having some trouble then declared it all good.

What I didn’t realize was she canceling and redoing the tickets over and over again, each charging me for them. A grand each time. So I ended up in a foreign country penniless. Airline company said it was fine since my funds would be returned in a week.

Bunch of people in Texas just got surprise massive electric bills.
nullserver··on If you miss an Apple Card payment, Apple disables all your Apple accounts
A surprise 17,000 electric Bill?

I don’t hear about it much anymore but for years was terrified of making a cell data mistake and ending up with a 40k+ bill.

If you can get on disability.

I was in bed 16 hours a day nearly blind and extreme agony for nearly a year.

Disability laughed at me. Said I had a desk job so it was fine, all I had to do was sit their.

nullserver··on Use Touch ID for Sudo on Mac
Back in the day I used to tweak my Linux box, win3.1/95, vim, android phone, etc. endlessly.

After awhile they would all become unusable, and I would reinstall everything back to default and try again. Great for leaning, lousy for day to day work.

Resetting things back to a known state can make life lot easier.

In 10 years I can’t recall needing to reset a Mac.

nullserver··on Bitcoin may be optimally positioned to become preferred currency for world trade
During gold rush a Mug of beer was a pinch of gold.

Bartenders would favor employees with big hands.

Government came in and printed gold coins to solve the currency problem. However it turns out that a 50 dollar gold coin is not useful in any but the largest transactions.

In other news there has been an unusual spike of unlicensed micro nuclear plants found in peoples back yards.

Always assume others have the sense of humor of a 99 year old stick of tnt.

Had someone at work mention they needed to drop off a dog at grooming on the way to pick up Chinese.

I had to walk away for a bit, as I couldn’t hold it in, but didn’t know if that sort of humor would fly with that crowd.

String. Used as factory test for populating objects in tests.

It certainly caught my attention.

Was new guy at a startup. Soon noticed that chuck Norris was in our compiled JavaScript. Turned out Someone had included the entire test suite in production deploy.

Had been like that for nearly a year. A few minutes of work brought out client js file from 12MB to less then 1mb.

nullserver··on The Cuboid: A DIY air purifier that's better than a box fan
When I was a teen I worked a few months in an office where people chain smoked constantly. My computer kept dying, and I started ranting about how much old these computers were. Based on how much yellow gunk was inside it. Like quarter inch layer on everythin.

I was informed they were less then six months old. Resigned by end of month.

nullserver··on Why Is the U.S. Murder Rate Spiking?
Article awhile back talked about how about 8% of the population avoids crimes only out of fear of punishment.

Remove that fear and a significant segment of the population will go on a rampage.

nullserver··on Anime is booming, so why are animators living in poverty?
So we want government setting pay rates for anime artist? How about quotas. Government pays on a per episode completed. More content created the more is paid.
nullserver··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
What would life look like if we tried to be 100% prepared for all contingencies?

Probably similar to people living in a cave and refusing to leave it out of fear.

Rebuilding after disasters is a tried and true method.

nullserver··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
Was in adtech for awhile.

Gig work and Airbnb saved my life and kept family off street.

I got injured and disability decided to play hard ball.

Working whatever hours I could be functional and being able to stop and rest, or wait for medication side effects to ease off. These are the only thing that kept us off the street.

nullserver··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
Appreciate the thoughts. I did find studies, doctors had no interest in reading them.
nullserver··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
Tried. Neurologist ran an MRI then suggested I sleep more. Then they tested me for epilepsy.

Weird experience

nullserver··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
Vague symptoms. I was a confused mess for a long time.

No one believed me. Kept shoving anti-depressants at me.

Took better then 2 years to find out what the stroke like symptoms were. They were strokes, go figure.

Toxic exposure activated factor 5 Leiden. So my blood clots like crazy now. Wasn’t an issue before.

Again, doctors don’t like to get involved.

Wife had a horrific cough for a year, then recovered. Kid isn’t the brightest anymore. But that’s hard to prove.

nullserver··on Big name corporations more likely to commit fraud: study
Tried. You have to have a doctor verify that gas caused injuries. Doctors did not want anything to do with a lawsuit.

Plus they had no idea what 3 months of natural gas exposure would do to body.

Turns out most cases of being exposed to that much and that long simply end in explosion.

I’ll call out directly. Life and health got ruined.

Rented a house from Invitation Homes. Show up. All windows open. House looks great, sign paperwork. Agent leaves.

Closed up windows, notice a chemical smell. Call, and told it’s just new carpeting, will be gone soon.

Me and family proceed to get extremely sick over the next months. Like people can’t wake up, forgetting names, stroke symptoms, etc.

Many calls got nothing but run around. Our mental capacities are greatly diminished.

Turns out there was a massive natural gas leak. Plus multiple appliances emitting Carbon monoxide.

Gas company stated it was a race to dying in sleep or house exploding.

So they knew house had weird smells and fed us endless lies about carpets, flooring, paint etc.

Carbon monoxide detector that came with the house was defective.

Destroyed health and career. One kid went from advanced placement to special needs. Dog went insane.

We also had a wall catch on fire, ac drop through a ceiling into kids room.

We left moment we could, and have a nice big bill from them for breaking lease.

Invitation Homes is straight up evil.
