nulltype··on Image-to-Image Translation Demo
The backend service was probably confused. Just try running it again.
nulltype··on My Go Resolutions for 2017
It's weird how people miss the conditional operator but not switch case fallthrough.
nulltype··on World Energy Hits a Turning Point: Solar That's Cheaper Than Wind
How does that compare to other energy storage though?
nulltype··on Hyper 1.0.0
Why do the terminal emulator and shell need to be different things?
nulltype··on Machine Learning for Software Engineers
I'm reading this one math book by Richard Hamming: https://www.amazon.com/Methods-Mathematics-Calculus-Probabil...

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but it seems to have all the stuff I forgot from college.

nulltype··on DataJoy is shutting down
Any examples of some successful open source dumps of proprietary projects? By dump I mean they just release the code with no docs or support.

The only one I can think of is id software, but they spent some time to clean it up I think. Also their products are games and already very popular.

nulltype··on Dead googlecode URLs on GitHub
I've seen the complaint about huge diffs a few times. Why not just exclude vendor directories from the diff?
nulltype··on A JVM Does That? (2011) [pdf]
Well I've never implemented a GC or built a processor specifically for implementing GC on.
nulltype··on A JVM Does That? (2011) [pdf]
I think when comparing numbers like that you might need throughput figures as well. Supposedly there is a tradeoff between GC pauselessness and throughput.
nulltype··on LambCI – A continuous integration system built on AWS Lambda
Is a Google App Engine application also serverless?
nulltype··on Ask HN: What should I do with my old laptop?
I use mine as a cat heater.
nulltype··on Why do we use the Linux kernel's TCP stack?
I think you can do the with the NetBSD rump kernel
nulltype··on Why do we use the Linux kernel's TCP stack?
Tcl may be the most under appreciated language.
nulltype··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
Or it's proof of the strength of their convictions that they can have an impoverished type system despite all the pressure to have an enriched one.
nulltype··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
Go, super stable, reliable and fast. I also love the ideology.
nulltype··on New Cities
Is it all indoors or is it outside as well?
nulltype··on I Hear That Asteroids Machine Calling My Name
The vector display seems to have a decay time so there are some trails I think but not as strong as the picture. I remember the shots being really really bright on the display, but the camera seems to add a bunch of flare.

Compared to asteroids in a MAME emulator the real display is way different.

nulltype··on On the Complexity and Performance of Parsing with Derivatives
Here's a video of Rob Pike, developer of Go, talking about a lexer he built for the Go text/template package:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxaD_trXwRE

It supports unicode.

nulltype··on On the Complexity and Performance of Parsing with Derivatives
I'm pretty sure he mentioned he wrote his own parser.

nulltype··on The Lack of Options for Startup Employees’ Options
Nice article! Good graphs. Of course, not having stock at all because you can't afford your options may limit the upside potential even more than RSUs. Maybe it could be choice.
nulltype··on The Lack of Options for Startup Employees’ Options
Would issuing RSUs instead of options avoid this issue?
nulltype··on The Lack of Options for Startup Employees’ Options
Usually you are allowed to exercise the options as soon as they are vested.
nulltype··on Introducing SpotMini, a smaller version of the Spot robot [video]
Do farms need robots?
nulltype··on Everybody gets WebSockets
I'm a little confused by the pricing page: https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/200169466-C...

It's not clear to me what a "low" or "high" volume of connections is, and if that is number of connections or throughput.

nulltype··on Java garbage collection can be really slow
I'm not saying GC is a great idea but c++ doesn't necessarily solve your allocation problem: https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/m/#!msg/chrom...

It seems like high performance systems should just be coded like microcontrollers, no OS or minimal embedded real time OS and you manage all your memory yourself.

nulltype··on The average size of Web pages is now the average size of a Doom install
Web apps/documents both look pretty good compared to modern games, those things are 100s of MB at least.
nulltype··on Memory Access Patterns Are Important (2012)
Nice! This is exactly what I was thinking of, thanks for the link.
nulltype··on Memory Access Patterns Are Important (2012)
Right, I'd like to avoid that complexity entirely, just get direct access to things rather than hinting what I want.
nulltype··on Memory Access Patterns Are Important (2012)
Well imagine I could address memory on the CPU die like a register but say 1MB of memory, located right next to the normal place you put a cache.

It does not have to be coherent I think. Process thrashing sounds like an issue though. I imagine if the address space is across all CPU cores then the software can pin to a core so that the access is local. Remote access to another CPU will be slow, but I'm not sure how great it is with caches anyway.

nulltype··on Memory Access Patterns Are Important (2012)
If main memory is so slow, would it be better to treat cache as memory and handle it directly in code rather than try to trick it into doing what we want?
