orbitingpluto··on Inside the Windows 95 File System (1997) [pdf]
I've had one of these dongles fail before. Penalties for non-timely delivery made duplicating these dongles necessary.

And yes, those parallel port dongles were even worse. I suppose you might be able to find a PCIe parallel port card?

That reminds me of how much I hated software license USB dongles.
orbitingpluto··on Want to Understand What Ails the Modern Internet? Look at eBay
I've made a 1 cent purchase including shipping from Shenzhen.

China is not "siphoning money out of our economy". Chinese companies are passing their logistics costs to Western postal systems. There is a difference.

We honour the postage on packages from other countries. China's "One Belt, One Road" is being paid for by other countries' postal systems. Chinese companies need only get their products out of port.

And for Canada:

As for the propaganda comment, isn't it a bit on the nose for someone to make that comment with a username Правда? Please let me now if you are having problem with colloquialism, comrade. да?

orbitingpluto··on Want to Understand What Ails the Modern Internet? Look at eBay
I have had good experiences with items that cost over $50. They tend to arrive quickly. For instance, a tray of CPUs was shipped to me in less than 36 hours for $10 total shipping.

For me, it is the inexpensive items with free shipping that seem to be the most risky. I also probably bid on auctions rather than fixed prices items more than the average person.

In the last two years, I've found that about 1 in 4 of my purchases from China will never arrive. Obtaining refunds is an easy process but frustrating. Many of the sellers will have rankings that make them seem trustworthy only to disappear completely. And we can also lay blame on the western hemisphere. Canada and USA postal systems bear the brunt of the costs of "free" delivery. They will give these packages low priority. Packages will languish for months and when items finally arrive, it can be difficult to arrange payment with the seller after a refund.
orbitingpluto··on What the Airline Knows About the Guy in Seat 14C
I deliberately didn't sign up for my workplace birthday planning calendar. I chipped in for others birthdays but didn't feel any need to get my turn. So they made mine April 1st.

Touché.

orbitingpluto··on Luxury hotels are being inundated with requests from self-described influencers
Pot bellied middle-aged bald white man drives to his Motel 6 in his Ford Fiesta, crosses the street to a Waffle House, gorges himself on waffles and syrup, and returns to his hotel room to cry and wonder where it all went wrong?

Sounds great.

orbitingpluto··on USB Type-C is still a mess
I stand corrected.
orbitingpluto··on USB Type-C is still a mess
Not having USB-C on my laptop doesn't even matter. The Google Pixels 1/2/C and Nexus 6P have USB-C, but they don't transfer data at that speed.

I also don't want to fry my devices however and I'm scared of these poor quality miswired cables, so I am a steadfast advocate of buying my USB-C cables from Anker.

orbitingpluto··on Google quits selling tablets
What I want to know is why new exercise equipment is running Android 2.2 Froyo.

I had to reboot a brand new stair climber with an Android interface today. Software kept crashing whenever I tried to select an exercise profile.

orbitingpluto··on Google quits selling tablets
I've had two Nexus 9 tablets. One of them had a bright horizontal light filtering out from the border of the screen and was incredibly unreliable.

The other Nexus 9 never skipped a beat, but it was the 16GB version. It was good enough that I skipped over getting the somewhat pricey Pixel C because it was good enough. I regret that.

orbitingpluto··on GDPR Version of USA Today Is 500KB Instead of 5.2MB
So we've recently heard in the news that cryptocurrency mining supposedly takes .5% of all global power.

Now compare that to the extra electricity required for everybody undergoing the horrible experience of 80 poorly written trackers and ads constantly overloading each tab in a web browser.

This reminds me of the American budget. Cut the funding for Planned Parenthood and the Arts but we need a hundred new tanks!

Really, because the guy in the brown jacket had a incredibly coiffed beard? Is that what made you think they were homeless?

Your sophistry is all about equating asking a homeless smelly white dude with two perfectly respectable men waiting a couple minutes for their third to arrive.

When you go out with someone to eat, do you order as soon as you arrive and begin to eat even if the other person hasn't shown up yet?

orbitingpluto··on Backpage.com Pleads Guilty to Human Trafficking in Texas
Unfortunately all this might mean is that child trafficking cases not reported on Backpage have a much higher chance of never being reported.

So I don't view the statement particularly condemning RELATIVE TO (note the emphasis!) non-Backpage child trafficking cases. Furthermore, the age distribution of victims between Backpage vs non-Backpage victims probably differs considerably.

orbitingpluto··on Hackers Are So Fed Up with Twitter Bots They’re Hunting Them Down Themselves
The obvious answer is to restrict some API usage, specifically posting, to verified accounts.

This obviously conflicts with Twitter's incentive to maximize their profit and brand. So the next obvious solutions are token measures.

edit: And apparently to downvote anyone who calls them out.

orbitingpluto··on The cost of games
I didn't devote much time, but about half of the 10 manuals I looked at quickly are of horrible, almost unreadable, photocopies. One thing I did find is that some games, like Arcanum, use "warez" copy protection cracks.

orbitingpluto··on The cost of games
"If you want to preserve the games you love, you can help by not pirating,"

conflicts with:

Did Nintendo actually sell us a Mario ROM on the Virtual Console?

https://www.technobuffalo.com/2017/01/22/nintendo-virtual-co...

Or if you go onto a retro gaming site like GOG you'll see that many of the "extras" are from pirated sources.

orbitingpluto··on The Giant, Under Attack
No one likes a story where the protagonist dies at the beginning and plot resolution centers on which of the antagonists profit more over his death.
orbitingpluto··on The illiteracy-promoting interior design abomination called “backwards books”
I think several designers have become confused as to the rationale behind this trend.

The purpose is detract from the books in the picture and focus on the design of the room. No one in their right mind actually thinks you're supposed to turn books around in practice. Unfortunately, there are many people not in their right mind. These people deserve to be mocked.

orbitingpluto··on 2018 Is the Last Year of America's Public Domain Drought
Intellectual property entering the public domain after the original creators are long dead is not an extreme.

Perpetuating private control over what was already promised to be in the public domain is the extreme.

Anything taken out of former copyright limits probably already is in the public domain even in spite of the legislation without compensation to those who have standing, which just happens to be the American people. Legal has never pursued that avenue. Pity.

As for your username, wow.
