orbitingpluto··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
Okay, here's a crazy idea for advertisers.

Tie the advertisement to the type of content that the user is already there to read about. Then you can serve ads from the content web server and make it indistinguishable from content, completely unobtrusive, completely noninvasive, and maybe even welcome.

orbitingpluto··on BlackBerry will shutter its app store on December 31st, 2019
I've commented elsewhere, but I received refunds for HP Touchpad purchases.

HP ceasing to activate Touchpad is a bit of an issue, but at least you can reactivate one by restoring a backup profile, your own or a generic one found online.

I'm sure they can add an addendum to the Terms of Service that you have to comply with to continue to use the service so that the service can shut down. You know, fairness.

I've had issues with several apps that I've purchased from the Windows App Store disappearing for good. I've had to ask for a refund each time, but Microsoft will refund.

GameSpot used to have a online store akin to Steam. I've also obtained refunds from them. That was a difficult process akin to the bypass notices from H2G2, but it was worth it as I had a large library of games.

Companies are not going to go out of their way to give you your money back. But they know they owe it to you and will refund your money if pressured to do so.

Then Blackberry should get started on providing individualized downloadable .bar files for users who have purchased software from them.

Either that, or get ready to provide a lot of refunds.

Don't blame the victim. But hiding that there was a leak? Sure.
orbitingpluto··on Hundreds of web firms record 'every keystroke'
If you midway opt for a different credit card, phone number, alias, name, or address that all gets lumped together. They get a better picture of you.

Lots of people will cut and paste passwords and sensitive information while working and swapping back and forth between applications. That would include every sort of personal information possible that can be put into a clipboard.

Flexibility doesn't necessarily mean portability. Always having to remember to take the right dongle is wasted mental effort. I'd rather lug around a slightly heavier device.

I'm writing to you on a 6.5lb laptop with FireWire, VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, two 3.5mm audio jacks, SD 5 USB-A and 3 USB-C. And in all honesty, I sort of miss having a 9 pin serial port.

orbitingpluto··on Samsung DeX
Are you forgetting that most people get their phones with their plans?

People will feel that they can absorb $20 or even $30 extra per month on their plan for a top tier phone. Absorbing any hit over $200 when someone lives hand to mouth makes these a non-starter.

The best chance for mass success for this option is for it to be included in the base purchase.

orbitingpluto··on Shimano wants to make your bike as smart as your car
The other nice thing about BT instead of IR is you eliminate the risk of cross contaminating signals. This is most likely a common cycling in the 90s story but I use to have a heart rate monitor and one guy I would ride with had the same device. His monitor would usually pick up my signal, but not vice versa.

You didn't even change the biopace rings? Those are murder on your knees. Can you even buy biopace rings anymore?
orbitingpluto··on Microsoft gives up on Windows 10 Mobile
One of the key issues for me purchasing on the Windows Store is that my purchases my disappear at any moment. I have had half of my purchased apps disappear.

And it is next to impossible to get a refund.

Last week I noticed that my purchased music on Groove has disappeared ahead of the end of year termination of service.

1) If you can't disable Secure Boot you might not be able to boot an alternative non-Windows operating system.

2) Some tablets use a 32-bit UEFI while supporting a 64-bit operating system. Nobody supports that. You're stuck with Windows again.

3) Can you turn on Wake On Lan features on the desktop? I played with geoproximity on my phone to send wake up packets when I got within 200m of home.

4) Can you disable Intel's Trusted Platform on your computer? Many people don't trust having an undocumented system in total control of their computer.

orbitingpluto··on Catalan referendum: preliminary results show 90% in favour of independence
How do you think externally forced legality factors into self-determination of a group of people encapsulated linguistically and geographically into a larger nation?

If this was a referendum in Tibet voting to leave China, would you have a different position?

orbitingpluto··on Man convicted after preventing counter-terrorism police search
I don't know why anyone would cross a border with electronics of any sort in this day and age.

But not having electronics is also grounds for suspicion.

orbitingpluto··on Facebook, You Needy Sonofabitch
Once upon a time I had a Dell Streak mobile, carrier locked. Without rooting there was no way to remove the default Facebook app. It would keep asking for you to log in. There was nothing you could do. If you dismissed the login activity it would just respawn within two minutes.
orbitingpluto··on Don’t Fall for Babylonian Trigonometry Hype
I had to go through a Babylonian secant table and find the error as an exercise. The actual point of the exercise was in determining how the error in calcuation was made.

Figuring out how science was done is still science, even if all you're doing is figuring out how to do the exact same thing but in a different way.

orbitingpluto··on I Almost Left Tech Today
I have also seen that sort of behaviour at the high level as a female president and her most immediate female cronies, Given the owner, she would not have climbed up in the company without acting like that.

Whether they were emulating the corresponding male behaviours to get ahead or are just awful human beings is inconsequential, but my vote was for, "Why not both?"

You have to challenge these people for your own mental well being. If it doesn't work out for your career prospects, oh well, at least you remain a content and happy human being.

orbitingpluto··on Google to add 'news feed' to website and app
What I want to know about Google's news feed priorities is what possessed them to think it's a good idea to completely overtake the Play Newsstand app?

To access a magazine subscription, you must open Play Newsstand, click on the Library icon now relocated to the bottom (as they've culled all options from the hamburger menu), then scroll down every single news feed source to which you are subscribed (I believe there are defaults as well), just to get to your most recent issues.

I spend about 10x more for magazines on Play Newsstand than I do on Play movie rentals & android apps every year. Yet the options for automating downloads, selecting the type/quality of download, verifying library content, etc are amateurish at best. You cannot even read a magazine using Google Chrome in Linux.

I also have almost a full year's worth of a subscription that doesn't even show up. When I called support, they stated it was a known issue. No refund and no attempt to fix. $70 down the drain.

But yeah, my news feed is so much more important than the household $500/yr on magazine subscriptions.

orbitingpluto··on Microsoft cuts off Windows 10 support early for some PCs
Many of the 32GB Bay Trail Windows 8 tablets that were upgraded to Windows 10 for free were unable to install Windows 10 Anniversary edition. For these devices you had to do a completely fresh install to get from Windows 10 to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.

Conceivably you've cut your support from 10 years to 2 by upgrading to Windows 10.

orbitingpluto··on Bitcoin Is Having a Civil War as It Enters a Critical Month
You've broken some pretty obvious rules of modern propaganda here. Ascribing Satoshi to your cause is akin to using the Great Leader proof by authority. Your arguments sound too early 20th century.

The obvious problem is both sides can make a claim to Satoshi while forking. I'm commenting here because the one thing I do know about Bitcoin is that Satoshi apparently suggested increases in block size to compensate for an increased number of transactions.

Whatever Satoshi wanted is irrelevant, but the only thing I can gleam from your amateur propaganda attempts (Satoshi is only one of your mistakes above) is that you shouldn't be trusted.

orbitingpluto··on Differentiating laptops: How about a decent keyboard? (2015)
I set up a Roku for someone and the d-pad on the remote jumped twice instead of once for every click. Putting in a password required mod 2 arithmetic and switching between rows/columns with even/odd lengths. Things can always become more absurd.

Do you even vi? Remove everything! Here's a link to the pic of the keyboard for which vi was originally designed on:

I completely agree with your post. Removing the home/end & function keys is such a waste given the amount of free space for keys on every single notebook ever made.
