orbitingpluto··on BlackBerry hands over user data to help police 'kick ass,' insider says
I received a couple free BB Playbooks. Still a good cardio gym tablet, because I don't care if it gets smashed or stolen. Battery life is great, I only need to charge it every 3 days or so. Alas, QNX...

Used to be annoyed that it needed to phone home every single time I connected by Wi-Fi. There is also a security vulnerability on port 4455, can't remember what it is called though.

The guy who created Ghost Commander ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghostsq.co... ) ported it over to the Playbook. It is the only thing keeping that tablet usable.

These cards are predatory because they have fees to withdraw, fees to not have the card expire and your money go poof, and even fees to even check your balance.

Some states have enacted laws (Illinois is one I believe) that prohibits employers using these cards if the employee does not wish to use one.

Employers use these cards because the debit card providers are willing to take on the cost of payroll for the privilege of gouging the employees in fees.

orbitingpluto··on Police use new device to seize money in bank accounts or on prepaid cards
The thing that I don't understand is that these prepaid debit cards are only loaded from the government or your employer, hence guaranteeing the money is legal. Yet these cards are what is being targeted, because only the poor use them.

orbitingpluto··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
Many judges seem to exert themselves in finding excuses to not have to apply the law, to not have to do their job at all, and to escape consideration of the lawsuit at hand.

A higher court will only consider an error in law from a lower court. But when the lower court commits an violation of natural justice/due process by not even considering what the original lawsuit is about and being incredibly obtuse about what they did consider, a higher court has nothing to rule on.

orbitingpluto··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
Nothing astounds me more than the Herculean lengths a judge will go to to avoid the 'core legal questions' in a case. Not only in the judgement, but by disallowing even the most basic testimony or evidence to be presented. While this violates due process or 'the principle of natural justice', no judge on appeal ever seems to rule that the lower court judge was acting in an obviously corrupt manner. The fiction of the system of justice has to be preserved.

This is further compounded by how vague judges will be in their decisions in some attempt to prevent a successful appeal. The judgements relation to the facts are so intentionally obtuse.

orbitingpluto··on This is not a place of honor
I'm never understood this marker system. Graves have been marked in a threatening manner so that they would not be plundered. It doesn't work.

The point is to hide the waste. The system should be designed to progressively unveil warnings if some future man starts digging. Otherwise, you're just asking for them to dig it up.

Another thing not mentioned is to design the container so that anyone who plans to excavate will think they have hit rock bottom... like Pharoahs' tombs or a multi-level pirate cache.

Or even better, put something horrible and poisonous twenty feet down. It might be better to obviously poison a couple people if they start digging this up. That would be easily understood and eventually avoided.

Remember the radioactive sign in the Star Trek episode where Data gets shishkabobed? They made jewelery...

orbitingpluto··on Did the Clinton Email Server Have an Internet-Based Printer?
I never really understood why the NSA couldn't have provided her with some sort of handheld digital device that wasn't that Windows CE PDA. I also don't understand why Clinton didn't just opt to use it. Having used the WinCE devices before, they're not all that bad to do email on. They're not good, but how much worse would it have been compared to a BB? I used a UT Starcomm PP6700 (or something like that) and I even kinda liked the keypad.

orbitingpluto··on Microsoft is cutting 1,000 jobs in Finland as it stops phone production
But in 2007, the n800 would have been a ghastly tablet/phone with 2.5x the pixels, expandable storage to 64GB, and several different media players that sucked, but are still better than iTunes today. I'm still using the Canola media player on an n810.

orbitingpluto··on Cops Cuffed Me for Selling My Own Mac
I am responsible for creating a false positive. A notebook was stolen soon after I received it back from an OEM screen repair. The next day the same model showed up on Kijiji of all places. From the pictures, I was certain it was mine because there was an identical ExpressCard, the logo on the back of the screen was bent just as I had received it from repair, 2 of the 4 stickers were removed just as mine were, Also the RAM and hard drive were a non-standard upgraded amount. To top it off, it even had the ubiquitous glowing mushroom background. The cops checked it out, and the serial # and windows product key did not match.

The 'collision' of my cosmetic and functional alterations matching with someone else may have seemed unlikely, but it really wasn't. The laptop did not have a SD card reader (the expresscard), the stickers were in annoying places, of course you're going to get the same size of upgraded hard drive & memory, and that logo attachment sucked. Even the mushroom background was common enough.

The police showed up and asked to match the numbers at the door of the seller. There wasn't. They apologized. They phoned me back, and I apologized for wasting their time. I also made an apology to the seller, who was incredibly cool about it. Probably because no tasers were involved.

orbitingpluto··on Microsoft is cutting free OneDrive storage from 15 to 5 GB
Well I tried out Symantec's/Norton's Cloud Storage (25GB freebie) They lock you out.

I expect what Amazon does: Amazon just let me keep the files, but won't let me change aanything when they removed their free ofering.

Dreamhost had 50GB of backup which they no longer offer, their file permissions were so mangled you could traverse and download stuff from a good portion of their clients.

Universal DNA testing in a country like Kuwait is transparently oppressive.

orbitingpluto··on Ask HN: Best linux laptop right now?
If you don't disable quick-charge in the BIOS/UEFI many Dell Latitude batteries get eaten up in a matter of months, especially the 9-cells. I learned the hard way. When I bought the E6420 I disabled. Original 9-cell is still good after all this time. The 1600x900 is sufficient too, I don't know how people work off of 1366x768. Cheap $10 DVD replacement tray for a second drive. Great battery life.

You can still get them refurbished from Dell, sometimes with 40-50% discounts for $250-300. Very worthwhile for a second portable.

Absolutely no issues in Debian even with the dedicated nVidia. Even the keyboard backlight works with no issues.

Someone's been vigorously rubbing Ayn Rand novels against his privates again.

The real question is how does wealth manage to concentrate so highly so quickly and by those who actually contribute so little.

edit: this guy is literally pulling an Atlas Shrugged. If you think you as the owner of the company 'make all of the money', I heartily suggest you try going it alone.
