patch_cable··on The past is not true
I’m curious what happens in the restorative justice model of the victim doesn’t want to participate?
patch_cable··on An update on the Federal Reserve’s Instant Payments Service
Yeah, that sounds about right.

While I was with the credit union, the buck was just passed between them and Zelle. Zelle seems to have been set up assuming that banks will somehow support it, and either they’re not actually prepared to do it or not given the proper tools to detangle the mess.

patch_cable··on An update on the Federal Reserve’s Instant Payments Service
Can you say more?

Zelle basically never worked for me at my local credit union (every single attempt to use it locked my account on suspicion of fraud), but I use it regularly with Chase with no issue.

How do you hope FedNow will improve on the concept?

patch_cable··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
It’s partially correct. I installed the Google Photos app with the intention of sharing some photos from my phone to a shared album. As far as I can tell, it is not possible to give Google Photos access to a limited selection of photos. The app just tells you to go back and give access to all photos.
patch_cable··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
I have one eye. Can confirm its the same to me. Also always comically off with baseball and tennis. Pouring tea is also tricky for me unless I am holding both the pot and the cup.
patch_cable··on Statement on AI Risk
Maybe that’s the difference in our views, but yes I am confident.
patch_cable··on Amazon walkout to go ahead after 1,700 employees sign on, organizers say
I think it cheapens the term “walkout” if they’re not actually walking out on anything. They’re not withholding labor or participation in anything.
patch_cable··on Statement on AI Risk
Reading the lesswrong link, the parts I get hung up on are that it appears in these doomsday scenarios humans lose all agency. Like, no one is wondering why this computer is placing a bunch of orders to DNA factories?

Maybe I’m overly optimistic about the resilience of humans but these scenarios still don’t sound plausible to me in the real world.

patch_cable··on Statement on AI Risk
I think between point 3 and 4 there is a leap to talking about “danger”. Perhaps the disagreement is about what one calls “danger”. I had perhaps mistakenly assumed we were talking about an extinction risk. I’ll grant you concerns about scaling up things like surveillance but there is a leap to being an existential risk that I’m still not following.
patch_cable··on Statement on AI Risk
> How can it not be obvious to you

It isn't obvious to me. And I've yet to read something that spills out the obvious reasoning.

I feel like everything I've read just spells out some contrived scenario, and then when folks push back explaining all the reasons that particular scenario wouldn't come to pass, the counter argument is just "but that's just one example!" without offering anything more convincing.

Do you have any better resources that you could share?

patch_cable··on Why labor shortages could be here to stay
Several of my friends working in tech in their 30s rent apartments and have children. Having a house isn’t a requirement.
patch_cable··on Seattle Amazon workers plan walkout over return to office, layoffs
So people are walking out at lunch time?

Do they plan to return after lunch?

patch_cable··on GitHub Copilot emits GPL code
> but it’s a a good introduction to the concept that something significantly more intelligent than us can be dangerous and pursue a goal with no regard to what we actually wanted

I think thing significantly less intelligent can do this too. See any computer program that went wrong. I don't think that is a novel idea.

Perhaps it is a lack of imagination on my part, but I can't help but think, in this stamp collector example, someone would just be like "wait why are these machines going crazy printing stamps" and just like turn them off.

I feel like any argument on the dangers of superintelligent AI rests on the belief it can also use that intelligence to manipulate humans to complete any task and/or hack into any computer system.

patch_cable··on GitHub Copilot emits GPL code
I watched the video.

> has preferences over world states

I think that part is a leap. I don't think is given that a super intelligent AI will "want" things.

> presumably a machine could be much more selfish

This feels like we're projecting aspects of humanity that evolution specifically selected for in our species with something that is coming about though a completely different process.

> It's a mistake to think about it as a person.

I agree, but I feel like that's what these concerns about AI are doing, because that's what people do.

> (The whole stamp collector thing)

It also seems to me there is a huge gap between a super intelligent AI and the ability to have a perfect model of reality along with the ability to evaluate within that model the effect of every possible sequence of packets sent out to the internet.

patch_cable··on Google to ban financial lending apps from accessing user photos, contacts
Regretfully, it seems on iOS apps can tell they’ve been given access to only specific photos. Googles Photo app refuses to work unless it gets access to all photos.
patch_cable··on We updated our RSA SSH host key
You may be confusing PCI-DSS versus PCI-PIN, which are a little different. You’re right about the requirements around acquiring pins though.
patch_cable··on Startup lender Silicon Valley Bank to sell stock to cope with cash burn
> pulling cash out of banks

In practice, the cash still probably ends up at a bank, just in a different account. I don't think anyone is going to pull it out and start burying it in their back yard.

patch_cable··on Google's Go may add telemetry that's on by default
> To be clear, I am only suggesting that the instrumentation be added to the Go command-line tools written and distributed by the Go team, such as the go command, the Go compiler, gopls, and govulncheck. I am not suggesting that instrumentation be added by the Go compiler to all Go programs in the world: that’s clearly inappropriate.

It doesn't seem like that is the proposal.

patch_cable··on I was unwittingly signed up for Amazon Music Unlimited
Sadly, this used to be possible with Amazon's service, but they removed the ability to upload your own catalog.
patch_cable··on Personal newsletters as a calmer alternative to social networks
How many people would you have to have read it for it to feel useful to you?
patch_cable··on Personal newsletters as a calmer alternative to social networks
I do exactly the same thing with my family and friends newsletter. I think it works really well.
patch_cable··on Personal newsletters as a calmer alternative to social networks
I have a newsletter that my extended friends and family have signed up for. I did post on social media when I set it up, and a couple of times after that. I also added a link to the physical Christmas cards we sent out a few years ago.

But now I have 20ish people who are interested and that is enough to me.

It doesn’t seem people have a problem receiving them in their inbox.

patch_cable··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Mentioned above, but I’ve been running Akkoma on a OCI free tier ARM instance with no issues.
patch_cable··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
I am also running Akkoma on a free-tier OCI ARM instance. It runs great.

Akkoma also works with the official Mastodon mobile app.

patch_cable··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
At least coinbase claims they keys remain on your device:

https://help.coinbase.com/en/wallet/getting-started/what-s-t...

Do you have reason to believe this is not the case? Or are you more concerned about a malicious update to the app?

patch_cable··on The death of Rackspace’s ‘fanatical support’
I think sometimes (often?) in the US it is not the injured individual pursuing the lawsuit, but rather their private insurance company trying to recoup losses.
patch_cable··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
It is not in most of the US.
patch_cable··on Typical Tesla driver is a Gen Y/Z man living in area with median income of $85k
I suspect it may be due to the onboard navigation being better than average, so folks aren’t using their phones to navigate.
patch_cable··on Google is “concerned” that Samsung is losing customers to Apple
I’m the same. I get paid to fix Linux issues at work. When I get home I enjoy using my devices to do non-IT things.
patch_cable··on Apple contractor fired after her day-in-the-life TikTok video went viral
I assume Apple has some pretty strict rules about positing pictures from inside the office on social media.
