phpnode··on Microservices: Why Are We Doing This?
View = Function(State), the original idea behind React. I use React every day, and I enjoy it, but it hides nightmarish complexity to preserve a semblance of this original, neat and tidy idea.
phpnode··on Microservices: Why Are We Doing This?
I think this is a bit naive. Startup founders do not care about providing careers for engineers, and usually want to stop being a "startup founder" as soon as they possibly can - they are chasing huge exits and being a founder is incredibly stressful.

The real reason that microservices are so prevalent is that they became fashionable, for exactly the same reason a particular item or brand of clothing becomes fashionable - influential people were seen using them and so regular people aspired to start using them too. At a certain point in the popularity curve, _not_ using microservices becomes a controversial viewpoint.

They also suffer from being what I call "conceptual crack". There is a certain kind of idea that really tickles some kinds of engineer's brains. Microservices seem like a such a clean solution, each service having its own single responsibility, so easy to draw on a whiteboard, so neat and tidy. Other ideas I place in this category are blockchain, redux, and V=f(s). Clean and tidy ideas that are compelling conceptually but result in nightmarish levels of hidden complexity when they're put into practice.

phpnode··on FOSS devs are burning out, quitting, and even sabotaging their own projects
Also the core-js maintainer single handedly carried that project, with no financial support from Babel (or hardly anyone else for that matter). It became a vital part of the ecosystem, and then the community hung him out to dry when he asked for more support. The whole thing was shameful, especially those who mocked him for his unfortunate personal situation.

This looks a lot like Glimmer[0]

phpnode··on Russia to legalize software piracy
Bad times for non-saas businesses you mean?
phpnode··on What Color Is Your Monad
You can only dereference this pointer if you work at Google!
phpnode··on Google Search Is Dying
I'm not sure about these days, but historically the engineers on Google search wanted to fix these problems algorithmically, rather than delisting specific sites by hand
phpnode··on An introduction to type programming in TypeScript
Another example, SQL-database-in-the-typescript-typesystem here https://github.com/codemix/ts-sql

This would have been much easier if I'd had ts-regexp at the time :)

phpnode··on $130B wiped off crypto markets in 24 hours
Yes, they're busily printing away right now, as are USDC, and it will likely work just as well as before because everyone involved in crypto is incentivised to look the other way in the face of this blatant and massive fraud.
phpnode··on How to make it easier to build semiconductor factories
curious whether you've seen Oqton? https://www.oqton.com/
phpnode··on Study: No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work
I'm 37, so not that young. I'll take lucky though.
phpnode··on Study: No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work
I've never had a hangover, much to the irritation of others, what I do consistently get is a mildly bad mood that lasts about half the following day.
phpnode··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
I think it's literally just that they pay well
phpnode··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
Apparently I didn't make it clear enough that I wholeheartedly agree
phpnode··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
"I would simply protect myself by not spending cash on things that are scams"
phpnode··on Ask HN: What are your 2022 predictions?
I would actually expect the opposite - that FSD gets banned in the short term because mistakes are a. inevitable and b. super, super dangerous.

I think self driving cars only become safe when every vehicle is capable of self driving, and infrastructure is adapted accordingly.

happy to be proven wrong though!

phpnode··on Going from $110k to $24k for more skin in the game
I think you're rationalising a bad decision, one that weakens your position, and sadly it might be difficult to undo now, so you're even more likely to rationalise this to yourself.

If the problem was motivation try and find out why you were lacking it, I suspect the answer was not "I'm too gosh darn rich"

phpnode··on Going from $110k to $24k for more skin in the game
Hmm, over two years you're putting in an additional $172k plus all of the time and effort cofounding a startup entails, plus the opportunity cost of doing a startup vs collecting regular tech company wages working a 9-5. Is your investment properly acknowledged in terms of equity?

You're also sending a signal to your investors that your time is not worth much, and a signal to your employees that they can also expect scant wages and personal sacrifices.

It sounds like a bad deal, one I personally would not agree to, let alone writing about it publicly.

It is quite likely that after let's say 6 months of gruelling work you will start to burn out, start to feel undervalued, become difficult to work with and end up getting fired as a result. If things are this tight you should probably raise more money instead.

phpnode··on Facebook-owned sites were down
At least with WhatsApp you do have the contact's phone number, so you can reach them via SMS if necessary.
phpnode··on Hermit Programmers Are Dead
This article could have been written 10, 20 or 30 years ago with only the slightest of adjustments. We work in an industry with the constant need to learn new things and adapt to new ways of working, this will never change.
phpnode··on Web3 – A Vision for a Decentralized Web
Thank you for speaking up for what is right.
phpnode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
I have no idea about your performance, I'm sure you're a great manager. I only noted your word choice because I've seen people talking this way about their reports and it doesn't reflect well on them.
phpnode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
The people who speak like this in my experience typically use that kind of terminology to highlight their own superiority, not realising that it has the opposite effect.
phpnode··on What does my engineering manager do all day?
Probably avoid calling people minions if you can. Do you want to come across as someone who manages unimportant simpletons, or do you want to be perceived as someone who manages smart and interesting people? Build up those below you, don't knock them down - everyone wins.
phpnode··on I Invented Baileys (2017)
Maybe you mean Dooleys. It's toffee rather than coffee and is typically sold at extremely low end bars and nightclubs in the UK, or at least it was 15 years ago
phpnode··on Former U.S. officials describe details of the CIA’s proposals to abduct Assange
What possible advantage would there be in doing so? Biden would gain nothing but criticism, be accused of supporting a traitor and so on. Doing the right thing is rarely politically sensible.
phpnode··on Former U.S. officials describe details of the CIA’s proposals to abduct Assange
Why would they have any loyalty towards wikileaks? What is a useful idiot that has outlived it's usefulness?
phpnode··on ‘Every message was copied to the police’
1. That was way before the advent of smart phones and most technological surveillance techniques.

2. It was fictional.

phpnode··on ‘Every message was copied to the police’
Free to the makers of the device though, it's not like they were charging the manufacturers for paid promotions like an Instagram influencer would - they recommended this device to their associates because they thought this would help them coordinate their activities more efficiently whilst reducing their personal risk.
phpnode··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
The phrase "everyday occurrence" does not mean that something literally happens every day, it means that it happens commonly enough that it's not broadly notable.

You derailed this comment thread by quibbling over the specific frequency of these tragic events, rather than focussing on the point - which was that these accidental killings do indeed happen frequently - perhaps more frequently than you realised.
