phpnode··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
I'm going to go with the guy who was awarded an OBE for his work in infectious disease control: https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/news/2016/leading_infecti...
phpnode··on Ask HN: People are panic buying. What to do?
Depends where you are, here in the UK even wholesalers which supply smaller grocery stores are rationing things like toilet paper, pasta, flour etc.
phpnode··on Ask HN: People are panic buying. What to do?
It's not irrational any more, enough people were/are acting irrationally to cause real shortages, so much so that at this point the rational thing to do is to make sure you're prepared and stocked up with basic essentials.
phpnode··on Bootstrap Treeview
If you're in the market for a Bootstrap Treeview you're likely already using Bootstrap and therefore jQuery.

Your comment reflects exactly the kind of attitude that puts people off doing open source work. No one is forcing you to use this project, someone put effort into making this and released it to the world for free, what does your criticism add?

phpnode··on BBC Micro Bot
First ever comment including a link is probably a fairly reliable indicator of spam.
phpnode··on I Add 3-25 Seconds of Latency to Every Site I Visit
Terry was permanently shadow-banned, the subject came up quite often. He suffered from schizophrenia and would make racist and paranoid comments about 80% of the time, but his remaining posts were often pretty technical / insightful. As the victim of an illness it seemed unkind that he was banned, but at the same time a lot of his output was obviously very offensive.
phpnode··on I Add 3-25 Seconds of Latency to Every Site I Visit
I see it far less frequently now (thanks @dang!), but a few years ago it wasn't uncommon to see shadow banned HN users continuing to post for years, talking into the void. Sometimes I'd look into their post history and so many of them had been banned for utterly trivial reasons, it was pretty sad.
phpnode··on Crew Dragon launch escape demonstration
The explosion was not triggered by the self destruct system as has been pointed out to you repeatedly, and even if it were the system has been designed to work correctly in that scenario too (this is covered in the press conference).
phpnode··on Tabula Scripta: A spreadsheet for small data-driven apps
Should anyone build a product around Google APIs in 2020, given their record here?
phpnode··on Interpol issues 'red notice' for Carlos Ghosn's arrest
They show ads to visitors from outside the uk
phpnode··on Moonjit – Fork of LuaJIT to Continue Development
if you google "AFLG C64" you'll see historical references to the author, one "M. Pall". I think your link indicates the exact opposite of what you're suggesting - that "Mike Pall" is his real name and that it was the "other stuff" that was published under a pseudonym.
phpnode··on ECMAScript proposal: String.prototype.replaceAll
There's a proposal for RegExp.escape() which was rejected by TC39 for imho quite silly reasons: https://github.com/benjamingr/RegExp.escape/issues/37
phpnode··on Fight back against Google AMP (2018)
It doesn't matter how good or bad the technology is, or whether it's convenient or profitable to use it. AMP is a brazen attempt by Google to use their monopoly to take control of the web. The current version of AMP is not their intended final destination.
phpnode··on Apple Developer Documentation Is Missing
Should all corporations be above criticism because they're all made of people?
phpnode··on Spam in Your Calendar? Here’s What to Do
I got a fairly explicit one of these in my calendar the other day, unfortunately it's a calendar I share with my wife, so it appeared on her phone too. That was a fun conversation.

Neither of us could delete the event, either via google calendar or ical. Nor could I find the original email I assume it came from. In the end I just deleted the whole shared calendar.

phpnode··on Fraudsters Used AI to Mimic CEO’s Voice
1. Yes, the ease with which attackers can take over a phone number is a big security issue in general 2. You might question your wife's request but people are far less likely to question their CEO in the same way, it might be seen as insubordination
phpnode··on Alan Turing to be the face of new £50 note
> that's never going to happen anymore

Give it 15 years...

phpnode··on I Took a Pay Cut for a More Meaningful Job
> the only person I know personally who retired so early is wildly successful. Far more than he was at work.

If he's wildly successful, did he really retire?

phpnode··on Where did all the cod go? Fishing crisis in the North Sea
it's simple enough that it has probably been rediscovered independently many times throughout history.
phpnode··on Why I Turned Down an AWS Job Offer
In my FB interview I was told I wasn't allowed to run the code, which seemed completely ridiculous to me. It was even more frustrating when my interviewer told me I'd missed an edge case when I was certain I'd covered it - I'm still not sure who was right.
phpnode··on Scientists cook up new recipes for taking salt out of seawater
Yes indeed, much easier. The problem is that the places where you need desalination tend to be the places without much rain.
phpnode··on What’s New in ES2019
Pattern matching is a really important feature but I strongly dislike that proposal because it feels like it introduces a bunch of single purpose syntax that's going to restrict the ability to evolve the language in future. It feels like it's an addon, not a holistic solution.

I would much, much rather that type annotation syntax gets standardised first, because it is comparatively easy to build pattern matching when that's in place but going the opposite direction is difficult. What is a type if not a pattern?

phpnode··on The Anatomy of Web Components
In practice this would be

    <twitter-tweet id="424242424242"></twitter-tweet>

What you're saying is true only for the simplest of components.
phpnode··on The Anatomy of Web Components
They totally changed the API once already, renaming their initial implementation "v0".
phpnode··on The Anatomy of Web Components
> Who is promising that?

This was very much the narrative back when WCs were first announced / released. If that's no longer a focus then what is their selling point now?

phpnode··on The Anatomy of Web Components
Because there's essentially nothing to leverage. The one thing that they promise (interoperability between frameworks) is both not true in my experience and not compelling enough to warrant the massive amount of complexity required to work around their shortcomings. If you want nightmares go read Polymer or Oracle JET's source code, both are WC based frameworks, both had to go to extreme lengths to offer a semi-reasonable end user API.

They solve the wrong problem the wrong way. The creator of Ember recently tweeted about this: https://twitter.com/tomdale/status/1153309794226147330

phpnode··on The human impact of having too few nurses
This article is about the UK where the NHS has been chronically underfunded for the last decade.
phpnode··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
Yes, yes it is.
phpnode··on Why I don't use web components
Looks a lot like css in JS to me, have you considered simply using the platform instead?
phpnode··on Migrating 300k LOC from Flow to TypeScript
On this planet it is possible to do runtime type validation with typescript. It's not an out of the box feature but a number of libraries allow it, e.g. https://github.com/gcanti/io-ts
