phpnode··on Couples are taking out loans to pay for their weddings
This is amazingly common unfortunately
phpnode··on Ask HN: How do I represent a hierarchy in RDBMS?
From experience, so many things that graph dbs are not worth the effort in something like 99% of cases. Stick with postgres or similar if you can!
phpnode··on Intel Announces 8 Core I9-9900KS: Every Core at 5Ghz, All the Time
I've seen a number of comments like this over the last few days and I don't really get it, gamers use the internet right? Vast overwhelming majority of them are going to be running javascript programs hundreds of times per day
phpnode··on March Temperatures in Alaska: 20 Degrees Hotter Than Usual
only? 11°C is huge!
phpnode··on Google Wing will deliver to about 100 homes in Canberra
It's to keep the drone as far away from landing hazards as possible - you don't want someone accidentally losing a finger to a rotor or the drone crashing through someone's window or landing in a location it's likely to get stuck.
phpnode··on Nassim Talebs case against Nate Silver is bad math
Pretty low.
phpnode··on Ask HN: Is all programming constantly changing or just front-end JavaScript?
Webpack is virtually indispensable, it has a poor reputation because the docs weren't great in v1.x and because it takes some effort to understand and configure correctly. When it's configured it's rock solid and it rarely needs touching again.

I have this theory that people dislike it because that complexity comes front loaded - the most fun part of any new project development is right at the start and if you're spending time setting up webpack then the developer perceives that as frustrating time wasted rather than an investment in the project that pays off long term. A big part of create-react-app's success is because it means the developer can get started right away and not have to worry about that.

phpnode··on Warp – Mobile VPN
Companies are made of people and people inevitably screw up. Cloudbleed made Cloudflare more trustworthy in my eyes simply because of how they handled their (very large, very unfortunate) mistake.
phpnode··on Ask HN: Resources/Steps for Becoming a Consultant?
You just have to reach out to people, you can't expect to sustainably rely on referrals for growth. Remember that your existing clients have no incentive at all to refer you to other people and in most cases are disincentivised from doing so. Instead use your success with your existing clients as social proof when approaching other companies in their niche: "we just delivered X, Y and Z to CompanyYouveHeardOf, let's talk" is a great way to open a conversation with those other companies.
phpnode··on Re: “‬How does writing CSS in JS make it any more maintainable?”
Using sass-vars-loader for this which is a webpack plugin: https://github.com/epegzz/sass-vars-loader
phpnode··on Re: “‬How does writing CSS in JS make it any more maintainable?”
for your specific example - you can declare SCSS variables in a JSON file, that makes the definitions accessible to both JS and SCSS.
phpnode··on RefactoringUI Book
bought it earlier, read it pretty quickly. It's good, there is some gold in there and a lot of practical advice. It does feel a little bit expensive though, some sections are a little thin and this is made worse by the use of multiple blank pages between sections which makes it feel like the authors have padded it out.

On the other hand I'm likely to refer back to this book a lot over the next few years, so in that light $80 doesn't feel that bad.

I think I'd have preferred a living resource / subscription model rather than a one off book though.

phpnode··on Crypto Market Crash Leaving Bankrupt Startups in Its Wake
I mean, you can drive a Bugatti Chiron 500km for the same amount of energy as a single bitcoin transaction. The cost of a single transaction using e.g. visa is utterly negligible in comparison.

Edit: Some truly depressing figures here [1] including this

> Number of U.S. households powered for 1 day by the electricity consumed for a single transaction: 16.54

phpnode··on Crypto Market Crash Leaving Bankrupt Startups in Its Wake
The energy use / ecological impact of crypto makes it nothing short of unethical.
phpnode··on The 4tH compiler
Pretty sure this is a Windows chm file exported as html
phpnode··on Hyperscript Tagged Markup: JSX alternative using standard tagged templates
Why is it not JavaScript? The Ecmascript spec explicitly allows syntax extensions.
phpnode··on Falcon Heavy Model – Flight 1 [video]
That's one of his design goals, most model rockets are unrealistically fast compared to the real thing
phpnode··on Mondelez cuts ties with 12 palm oil suppliers, citing deforestation
The oil is in the fruit of the tree not the trunk, they don't cut down the palms to extract the oil, they cut down the rainforest to make room for the palms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil
phpnode··on Redbird: A modern reverse proxy for Node
Webpack actually supports exporting an array of configurations. https://github.com/webpack/webpack-dev-server/tree/master/ex...

phpnode··on Crypto’s 80% Plunge Is Now Worse Than the Dot-Com Crash
So... This is good news for bitcoin?
phpnode··on Optical fibre made in orbit should be better than the terrestrial sort
I'm imagining a giant spool of optic fibre made from lunar regolith being wound back to earth directly from the moon
phpnode··on Lerna restores unmodified MIT license
There are some examples in this issue, but that's only a small selection. https://github.com/lerna/lerna/issues/1630
phpnode··on Commons Clause
The second paragraph of the article specifically includes consulting and support.
phpnode··on Commons Clause
Yikes, the wording around consulting seems especially worrisome - are they effectively prohibiting third parties from providing redis technical support? This move will likely kill the project as it is today.
phpnode··on Apple Patent Turns Car Windscreen into Giant Augmented Reality Screen
How?
phpnode··on Oracle owns “JavaScript”, so Apple is taking down my app
It didn't originate there, they acquired the rights to the name when they bought sun
phpnode··on Backpage.com seized by U.S. justice authorities
As a non-american jaywalking laws seem utterly crazy. The onus should be on the driver not to hit pedestrians, not the other way round
phpnode··on Wall Street rethinks blockchain projects as euphoria meets reality
> It's really not hard to think of useful applications for blockchain.

Then please list some useful, concrete applications of blockchain that would not be solved better and cheaper by a normal database.
