phpthrowaway99··on Privacy vs. “I have nothing to hide” (2019)
Was it really routine maintenance to BleachBit an entire server after you receive a subpoena from the FBI?
phpthrowaway99··on Anti-royal protesters are being arrested in the U.K. as 'Not My King' tag grows
FYI, it wasn't me even once. I actually appreciated the note because the distinction never crossed my radar even once. Plus I'm technically ESL so why not learn.

You didn't explain at all why it isn't okay.
phpthrowaway99··on Anti-royal protesters are being arrested in the U.K. as 'Not My King' tag grows
You say it's not okay. I say it is. Unless you have something more this is basically just a random opinion stated as if it wasn't an opinion.
phpthrowaway99··on Can the American mall survive?
It's the location. San Ramon is a great town. Stick that same mall in Modesto, CA and it would be something else entirely.
phpthrowaway99··on OOP “is really just a common sense extension of structured programming”
I really appreciate your offer regarding PM, and the time you took to write that post. As you figured, I have learned those easier parts of not making things global, writing functions, separating files, all that. The way you explained it does make it clear that OOP could be the next step in helping me keep my sanity and my code clean. Since writing this post I looked up a few explainer videos regarding OOP and somewhat get it now. I somehow get the feeling that if you do a good job with functions, it's almost working the same way. But I'm sure there's still parts I'm missing. I appreciate your offer but I don't think it's fair to use your time when I haven't personally tried to use the countless resources explaining OOP that are available online. I'll look into them so I know what the possibilities are when I work on my next project. Thank you for the response.

I imagine it all depends on what the use case it. If your bridge is for hikers and mountain bikers, that seems fine and the best use of the local resources for trail maintenance. You could definitely hire some professionals to build a bridge that a tank or 18wheeler could cross over, but it might be a bit overkill. Would be impressive though!

Totally, "isolating private implementation details" sounds super clear and useful. /s

The general answer seems to be that OOP starts really helping when many people/teams are involved.

Being self taught and a one person team I suppose hasn't forced me into it yet.

phpthrowaway99··on Google pays ‘enormous’ sums to maintain search-engine dominance, DOJ says
They definitely do. But I'm usually searching the number of real people I talked to that put in a lead. Eventually I can find something usually, I just have to try various forms of formatting usually.

Those things are all true, but if I search Google for: 510 555 1212 It shouldn't take massive AI and 25 phds to find a result for a company that lists 510-555-1212 as their phone number.

Ok maybe it does. But it's not like Google is a startup and they haven't had time to get around to it.

And add in the fact that if I do search 510 555-1212 I really wish they could atleast bring up (510) 555-1212.

I guess for now I'll give them a pass on 510.555.1212

I like to think I'm a decently intelligent person. UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering. I self taught a few years ago and wrote an entire project management SaaS for a certain industry in PHP and jQuery front end. 34 small companies use it.

Even though I once took a highschool C++ course long ago that talked about OOP and made us do a few things with it.....

I still have no idea what OOP really is, and why I need it. Unless I'm using it without knowing, I have a feeling I'm either dumber than I think or people have lost their minds. I can't tell.

phpthrowaway99··on Google pays ‘enormous’ sums to maintain search-engine dominance, DOJ says
My personal moment when I realized Google isn't as smart as I thought, came from searching phone numbers.

A number calls me.

I type in the number with spaces to Google to try and find it. No results. Nothing.

I add dashes. Results come up.

I put the area code in parentheses, different results come up.

If google can't figure out how to search 9 digit numbers against phone numbers correctly, I'm not sure I can trust them for anything.

phpthrowaway99··on Ask HN: How do you deploy your weekend project in 2022?
Namecheap shared hosting, cpanel, php, myphpadmin for MySQL admin.
phpthrowaway99··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Hacker News
A few years ago I learned to code using YouTube how to videos and stackoverflow. I made a Saas for the industry I work in. I use php, bootstrap and jQuery. I even built it as a SPA technically.

It is faster than basically any modern CRM in existence.

30+ companies use it daily. It runs in a namecheap shared hosting for $4 a month.
