proexploit··on URI.js is a facility for working with URLs
I've been working on one as I've got something of a hobby of "collecting" JS libraries - http://resjs.com

It's JSON powered similar to microjs.com (a great site, just not all inclusive) and I've still just got some work to go in terms of adding all the data I've got collected. If there's any interest, I could throw it up on Github and accept contributions to the data.

(One thing that may not be clear at this stage is that each lib will be tagged by license, dependencies, link to source code and/or documentation depending on availablility and have a short description)

Would love any general feedback too.

proexploit··on Ask HN: How to interview a full-time designer?
If you do ask someone to mock something up, make sure it's very small (1-2 hours of time max). There's a fine line between an evaluation and spec work, the latter of which will drive away a lot of good candidates.
proexploit··on Have you ever uninstalled an app based on aesthetics?
Aesthetic? I haven't yet although I could see it happening assuming the better looking app had the same features and I wasn't going to lose anything by switching over.

UX however, is another story. Many well-designed apps have spent time on their user experience and it's a component of their design. Many times the "uglier" apps will have design issues that impair usability, rather than just not look as beautiful.

proexploit··on Ask HN: No money, can't find any jobs, what am I doing wrong?
I'm a frontend developer at a pretty cool company hiring frontend developers (full time or contract). We pay well if you can code well and produce work on time / be available. If you don't want to post your portfolio publicly, shoot me an email (in my profile) and I'll take a look & tell you more about the company I work for as well.

Out of curiosity, are you looking for freelance only or would you be open to moving to California as well?

proexploit··on Knyle Style Sheets
The issue with doing it this way is that you're making the CSS processor doing unnecessary work. If you are writing:

    div#sidebar > form#login-form input
then you are actually searching for input, then #login-form, then form, then #sidebar, then div. It adds up on a really big site. If you had just written

    #login-form input
you get the same selection without the additional processing. Even if you want to track the full "stack", don't use those extra tag qualifiers.

    #sidebar > #login-form input
is much better than what you've got.

proexploit··on Ask HN: Could HN be monetized to the point of becoming its own entity?
Could it? Yes. Should it? No (My opinion). Would it? No (I highly doubt it).

As for your interior question of why it hasn't been replicated for other topics, I don't think it's simple enough to replicated. HN isn't monetized traditionally so there isn't a successful business model to replicate unless you include the entire company of Y Combinator.

proexploit··on Ask HN: Should Web designers know HTML and CSS?
It sounds to me as though you might be expecting the web designer to be both a designer and a frontend developer. It's critical that any web designer knows enough about HTML/CSS to know the limitations of the medium and what they can design but not necessarily enough to code it.

I think ideally, both the designer and frontend developer should be capable of slicing up a PSD. I'm a frontend developer, and I prefer to do that myself so I can save things in the optimal sizes and filetypes for my workflow. If the designer does it, they will be creating slices based on their opinion of how the website should be coded.

I don't think the responsibility for JavaScript is a gray area at all, it falls on the developer. It becomes a gray area when you remove one of the pieces of the puzzle, the frontend developer.

I also don't think your photographer analogy is fair. A photographers job can be defined as a person who takes photos. A designers job is most often defined as someone who creates designs.

It sounds like you're more of a backend developer, wanting to use a designer as a designer and frontend developer. You'll probably save money and get a better result if you have the designer stick to design and higher a third-party to quickly slice and code your PSD.

proexploit··on Ask HN: The Difference Between Startup & Side Project?
I agree here. A start-up not related to a dollar value or certain incorporation, it's a specific intention to start a business.
proexploit··on Tinyproj - Week One Recap
Many of those projects are poorly defined and ask too much work for the payment. The OP is asking for projects at a lower cost and lower time commitment, not devalued work.
proexploit··on Ask HN: Can you sell small non-scaling startups?
Why not post here as a start? If it's a worthwhile real business with some degree of stability, you'll probably find some interest. "Small" might mean $100/mo, $1,000/mo, or $10,000/mo to you and those have very different valuations and ways to sell.
proexploit··on Ask PG: What has changed since you wrote Hackers and Painters in 2004?
While sociopathy is very hard to diagnose, some studies have claimed that pretty signifigant amounts of politicians and CEOs/bosses are sociopaths or display a number of sociopathic markers. The prehistoric model could still be in action today.
proexploit··on Be Careful when Speaking to Federal Agents - 18 U.S.C. Section 1001
To add to that, I believe it's mainly for criminal charges, there are other legal situations in which you may not be provided a lawyer (income limits or not). An example would be a civil forfeiture where you could have assets seized and whether you can retain a public defender or not is up to the judge, not a right.
proexploit··on Ask HN: What's the best way to hire HN users?
Also the contractors spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlD_6iEb8Ed9dGs...
proexploit··on Ask HN: Any good Photoshop tutorials for front end developers?
Can you be a bit more specific about what you want to learn?
proexploit··on Fellow Developers: What's your salary?
When thinking about switching jobs, you could try applying values to additional factors and seeing where you come out.

For example:

Great weather - "Ok, I'd take $5k/year less for that."

Boring work - "Hey, I'd have no problem doing something boring for a few years for an extra $25k."

It's far from an exact science but it may help you figure out what it's actually worth to you. (Some things may be priceless as well, e.g. "There's no amount of money I'd take to work for Phillip Morris."

proexploit··on For the love of God, YC companies-to-be stop posting ambiguous job description
I can understand the various arguments for a need to be somewhat secretive and that's fine. That being said, there's some no-brainer concepts to include in a job listing if you want it to be worth your time.

#1) Don't just say what the job title is, be clear on what it means to you. I've had job interviews for a "frontend developer" be anything from a PSD-slicer to a 95% backend coder.

#2) If you want a passionate employee (you do), you need to give enough information about your company so they can tell if it interests them. I could care less what cool technology you use if I don't know whether I'm reforming healthcare or inventing new ways to impose banking fees. You can say what you do without providing any sort of specific information.

#3) Sarcasm online can be very easily misinterpreted. I suggest being upfront and professional in any job posting but if you must use some kind of sarcasm, be sure to note it.

Note: This is by no means a complete list, simply some reoccurring issues I've seen during my recent job search. Edit: Formatting.

proexploit··on 16 Arrested as F.B.I. Hits the Hacking Group Anonymous
The parent comment is using non-violence to mean the absence of physical violence which seem impossible to argue against. In the most common definitions of violence, DDoSing a site would be as violent as a large protest blocking traffic in the area.
proexploit··on Ask HN: What's your most useful CSS or JavaScript trick?
Full Reset? As in * { clear everything }?
proexploit··on Tell HN: We just got screwed by PayPal
Yes, this was my thought too. Through their API can't you essentially mimic the same functionality as if cards were stored on your servers without having to deal with PCI compliance?
proexploit··on Apple servers hacked by Anonymous
Right, I'm not suggesting it's a good idea to try and hide all signs of leaked details as I think that would be a futile effort, just arguing that re-sharing leaked information isn't harmless.
proexploit··on Apple servers hacked by Anonymous
Well, not "no one" but I do see your point somewhat. When it's out, it's out and you can't make it private again but you can contain the exposure as much as possible to keep the information in a minimum number of unauthorized hands.
proexploit··on Wikileaks & Datacell to sue Visa / MasterCard for 'financial blockade'
The article talks a lot about EU competition laws and what I got from a brief scan wasn't that Wikileaks was claiming Visa & Mastercard had to do business with them but that they coordinated financial blockade by the two biggest payment processing companies amounted to some sort of collusion. So it's not necessarily what they did, but how they did it.
proexploit··on Ask HN: Found an awesome site for freelancers but forgot the name. Any ideas?
Doesn't sound like this is it, but both: http://sortfolio.com/ and http://sachagreif.com/thelist/ might be interesting to you.
proexploit··on Ultra minimal CSS grid utility
I think of tables as a shortcut and they do cause actual problems in the future even if they work for you. I think the bigger issue here is that it isn't clear to everyone how to code with CSS. I use tables only for tabular data but my HTML is clean, fast and certainly not obscure. I would say in most cases I can create an tableless design in less lines of code and have a much easier time maintaining or updating it in the future.

1. Sure you can, go to Account Settings > Download Your Information (second from bottom). 2. I'm very much with you on this one. The privacy settings should be easier.
proexploit··on TrueCrypt User Held in Contempt of Court
I believe the police have the right to open the safe, but you aren't required to open it for them. If the police came into your house and said "show us every hidden object" so we can decide if it is illegal. You wouldn't be required to comply.

Well, one of them I've just progressed to "useable" status is a Facebook fan page previewer at preview.steadyhelm.com/path/to/your/server/ - Just makes prototyping and cranking out fan pages faster for me as I don't have to set up an application, deal with setAutoResize etc.

proexploit··on Is this a good name for a company?
Devious was also my first thought, possible self related "me being devious". You may have some people who think that but many may not as well.
proexploit··on PayPal sues Google + ex-PayPal VP for Google Wallet
Other companies have to manage fraud too and do it without upsetting so many people. The exact number doesn't matter, it's a lot higher than other financial services companies. The fact that they had to lock down against fraud to keep their business from failing doesn't excuse their business practices and customer service. There's multiple open loopholes for scammers that do not treat honest people well. We could debate this forever but we're going to have different opinions as we don't have a lot of exact statistics and perfect knowledge of their company policies / fraud prevention measures. I will continue to recommend people do everything they can do stay away from Paypal and you will continue using it. That's ok because we don't have to agree and although I feel differently, I recognize your right to your opinion.
