ptr_void··on As a Woman in Tech, I Realized: These Are Not My People
Staring at the chart, 1980 doesn't seem that significant. It shows from 1970s to 1980s, almost every major has seen an increase in women graduates.

I don't know much about this subject, best I can do is pass around a link(video) I saw that was semi-convincing to me that - there might be some general biological tendencies(https://youtu.be/p5LRdW8xw70). Biological tendencies are not useful for individual cases, so as long as everyone is given moderately equal chance at getting a job they qualify for and can do the work in peace, everything is well and good.

ptr_void··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
There has been almost no increase in median household income since 1970s.

I don't have much understanding of wider picture of drug prices and insurance to know it, but there certainly could be such issues. I think the comment I replied to was edited or I might have accidentally replied to wrong comment, I am not sure. On similar issue, here's Martin Shkreli proposing his own idea on this matter to keep prices down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbkz2VVUBLE
ptr_void··on Martin Shkreli is found guilty of securities fraud
By his explanation: There are only a small amount of patient that patients that needs this drug. I think the number was around 2000.

Also drugs are not the largest part of insurances pay for.

I would like to know more about this if you have sources, I have been following Martin Shkreli on a lot of social media for a while and by his explanations, there shouldn't be any person hurt as result of the price hike that he is famous for.
ptr_void··on Martin Shkreli is found guilty of securities fraud
I have seen videos where he explains: insurance pays for the medicine, not individuals, and people who can't afford/have insurance gets them freely from government programs/their company programs.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: Protect loved ones from online scams?
Besides adblock + auto updates, tell them how some of the scams work. Show them some example screenshots/videos etc. from different areas. Enough to make them think twice about what they are allowing to run on their computer. Scammers are usually lazy, many times their email addresses, website address, or web design might give it away - so doing a few side by side comparisons may help.

There's also a lot of youtube videos that could be easier to send and less boring to go through. Ex:

ptr_void··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
I don't follow
ptr_void··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
I don't doubt facebook's usefulness to many companies and online only businesses.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: How Did You Think About Having Children?
How old would I have to be to make my comment look understandable to you for my age?
ptr_void··on Ask HN: How Did You Think About Having Children?
Why is this even a consideration, people seem to create a new one every now and then and become all giddy about it. If there is no shortage, we should not be creating more humans. I wish human birth was more regulated. Once born, if people can't afford, properly maintain or educate their kids, it automatically becomes government's problem to fix, with all of us having to pay with taxes or otherwise having to live with. There is little if any, personal or economic benefit to having created one as individual.
ptr_void··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
If not with Facebook and Alphabet, there would still be most of those companies selling their products, with other means or site. There's not much that Facebook adds other than number of people it has using their site during their off times. If people needed to buy things, they could have easily looked it up on other sites or real places. There are many companies that do much more important things, produces more useful goods/productivity/services.
ptr_void··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
This makes me sad. I wish it was the case that the top companies have produced the most productivity/useful goods, not a messaging site with advertise that people use at their off times.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: Ubuntu Desktop Default Apps
Everyone default seems to be gnome nowadays, I don't understand why. One of the main reason for me to stick with Ubuntu was unity being a great DE.

ptr_void··on Ask HN: Does success in work bring you happiness?
A quick search tells me pleasure is temporary happiness; a constant orgasm machine should be able to fix that.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: Does success in work bring you happiness?
I don't understand people's obsession with happiness. It always seemed like a very weird and arbitrary metric. Orgasms makes people happy, perhaps we, as species should come together and fund/help build the constant orgasm machine, we will all be very happy.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: What good alteratives are there to Google News?
The daily hour-long version here is the only regular news I consume(minus notify NYC RSS): https://www.youtube.com/user/PBSNewsHour/videos I find them to be less jumpy than similar news sources, probably due to the lack of incentives to bring in massive profit.

If I am interested in something specific/real time, I will open up google news, reddit news, twitter, local news, web search, popular newspaper sites(nytimes, washington post etc.) and/or other relevant places.

ptr_void··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
- Daily, the full episode: https://www.youtube.com/user/PBSNewsHour/videos

- HN

- A whole bunch of other site/blog/channels as feed that I look at when I have time.

ptr_void··on The Brain as Computer: Bad at Math, Good at Everything Else
> someone is able to calculate the trajectory

The result is the similar if one was to calculate such trajectories, but I am not sure what happens in the mind can be called calculation. How can it be properly tested that brain indeed calculates trajectories when catching a ball? Would practicing catching ball improve their relevant mathematical abilities demonstrable on paper?

ptr_void··on How I learned to code in my 30s
As student trying to make sense of job space and prospects, there's just too many statements that gets posted on the internet that seems to contradict each other.
ptr_void··on Popular People Live Longer
If you were not trying to be poetic, religious or weren't under any influence, I thought I'd let you know that what you wrote sounds like meaningless word salad to me. It could be wise to consider seeking professional help to ensure everything is alright.

And as for concluding thoughts about world and human nature, I could suggest studying academic philosophy of those topic if you have extra time - to explore the enormous complexities that lies underneath those notions.

ptr_void··on How I Hacked My University's Registration System with Python and Twilio

ptr_void··on Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms
I don't see anything disturbing. It's their platform and feature, they are not passing any global laws.
ptr_void··on The future of education is plain text
There are some hiccups like newlines that don't transfer too well between unix/dos in plain-text.
ptr_void··on The future of education is plain text
markdown (pandoc compatible) + mathjax mathematical notations within dollar sign is future proof. Easily convertible to html/pdf etc, easily readable in raw.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: Do you respect DNT in your personal websites? How?
Just descriptive links + no js/other dependency for me.
ptr_void··on Ask HN: Do you have a business idea? Why haven't you tried it?
For reasons that are appropriate, I will not be taken seriously. The idea is only 1/3 software centric and can't be properly tested with prototype/at smaller scale. Also, no money. It's not that complex and I'm sure someone with the right circumstances will make the connection eventually.
