pylua··on Companies need junior devs
You have to be careful with this. It could be discriminatory.
pylua··on The Problem with the Job Market
If the optimal number of employees is found that maximizes profit then by definition there is no more work to invent. We could be converging towards that point.
pylua··on Dutch DPA fines Uber €290M because of transfers of drivers’ data to the US
The U.S. needs this!
pylua··on Dutch DPA fines Uber €290M because of transfers of drivers’ data to the US
You could be a citizen of the eu and us.
pylua··on Dutch DPA fines Uber €290M because of transfers of drivers’ data to the US
Funny thing is, us data is almost always maintained by people outside of the US, at least for banking. The servers may live in the us, but the people accessing it are probably located in Europe or India. This also means that the data lives their temporarily while it is being accessed.

The US definitely needs stronger laws here.

pylua··on Julius: Open-source reimplementation of Caesar III
The amount of mystery and curiosity that this game and others like inspired in me as a kid was immense. It’s great nostalgia and honestly still motivates me.

As an adult, I’ve enjoyed leisurely reading through this code to help unravel how it works.

pylua··on Was the Real Jobs Revision Negative 818,000 or Negative 915,000?
I feel like if this was the case the truth wouldn’t come out this close to an election. It really just shows how inept the government can be.
pylua··on GM to Cut More Than 1k Software Engineers, Mostly in US
I don't agree with this. The US government needs to encourage an economic structure that is best for US citizens. The company is not looking to save other jobs, but rather to increase their profits for stakeholders. Other industries are highly regulated, such as Medicine, Law, or otherwise have tariffs that combat against this. This is also a slap in the face to the US citizens that bailed out the company previously.

Literally everything that does not require a US stamp or certification is being outsourced. Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, non-software architecture, customer support, project management, and even accounting. This is not good for the US as a country. American workers are not competitive right now, unfortunately, considering the high cost of living and strength of the dollar. Also, American workers will find it hard to get a work visa in a very low cost of living country if they do wish to pursue a career where their field has been outsourced.

pylua··on Spring-rs is a microservice framework in Rust inspired by Java's spring-boot
They do a great job of keeping the language fresh, on many levels. Java streams, encryption, syntax updates. It doesn’t feel old to me.
pylua··on Flaw has Microsoft Authenticator overwriting MFA accounts, locking users out
This has nothing to do with knowledge of customers but really just a lack of caring.
pylua··on Spring-rs is a microservice framework in Rust inspired by Java's spring-boot
I don’t get all the spring hate here. Spring is a great framework, and the sheer developer mass means it’s easy to hire developers that can quickly be onboarded. It’s definitely opinionated, but a lot of the opinions are correct.

I think that rust is missing something like the above, and the attempt is appreciated by me.

pylua··on The Imminent Student-Loan Disaster
They should be discharged in bankruptcy like other loans.
pylua··on Why is it so hard for the U.S. to build quality transit?
There’s an argument in Atlanta that mass transit hasn’t expanded more outwards because it tends to bring in more problems in terms of people. I think people are starting to change on this, but the cost would now be massive,
pylua··on The number of available jobs in the US is shrinking
They are going to have to have job protection programs in the U.S. all contracts/labor between U.S. entities must be executed by those who are authorized to work in the U.S.

It’s difficult, and would be painful at first, but as a nation we owe it to each other. We can’t have the whole country turn into the rust belt. We can’t have people turning to drugs to cope with the pain of becoming economically redundant.

I’m surprised no candidate supports this. I think they would win easily.

pylua··on U.S. Department of Defense – Detecting Agile BS [pdf] (2018)
This document has no teeth. It is more simple than this … does it have fixed scope and fixed timeline ? If so it’s not agile.
pylua··on Tesla reports 45% decline in quarterly profit
Time to call in… McKinsey!
pylua··on Why Delta is still canceling flights as other airlines return to normal
Recently in Seattle one airline couldn’t locate the copilot! I couldn’t believe it.
pylua··on Why Delta is still canceling flights as other airlines return to normal
Stock price hasn’t done well. It feels like cronyismc and should be investigated.

Meanwhile, while I fly into the Atl, their headquarters, the workers at the airport tell me how they are on food stamps! Come on, America. Wake up.

pylua··on Boeing-owned Wisk expects to begin carrying passengers 'later in the decade'
Building prototypes since 2011? That is a long time. I wouldn’t hold my breath. I would read through some of the Glassdoor reviews.
pylua··on Boeing-owned Wisk expects to begin carrying passengers 'later in the decade'
Did anyone ask the engineers, or just the ceo?
pylua··on Let's blame the dev who pressed "Deploy"
In software development, the edge cases are hardly every fully documented or understood. That is because software is so malleable that there are so many different input / output combinations. Other engineering professions are much more constrained on their input.
pylua··on Let's blame the dev who pressed "Deploy"
The practice of building software would have to completely be flipped on its head to support professional liability. Agile would be the first casualty.
pylua··on Third Places and Neighborhood Entrepreneurship: Evidence from Starbucks Cafés
The ideal situation is that people that move to the area are able to make enough wages to pay for the appreciation in the house. I reject any premise that suggests it is not a possible scenario. I will admit that it is not possible given how our economy is doing, but that should change. However, if the economy was healthier that’s what it should look like, and that’s what people should be wanting from its government.

I think the problem is debt. The power of debt has outstripped any buying power of an individual worker.

pylua··on No Uptime Hosting (2006)
This is a great place to host all those litigation hold files.
pylua··on Third Places and Neighborhood Entrepreneurship: Evidence from Starbucks Cafés
They want more jobs to be available at wages where they can afford to buy or build houses.

I would be careful to read into these things too much.

pylua··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
If someone did that, it would be copyright? As the consumer of the llm, would that breach copyright
pylua··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
“I’m sorry, I can’t let you do that, Dave.”
pylua··on AT&T says criminals stole phone records of 'nearly all' customers in data breach
Drawer? I would say bank lockbox but that seems like a chicken and the egg problem . It’s not entirely solved sounds like.
pylua··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
Serverless, architectless, and programmerless.
pylua··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
This is just in general true of generative ai. In many ways it commoditizes skilled labor. They do not care about people in the posters situation. It is meant to lower the bar and make the labor cheaper.
