pylua··on Google lays off staff from Flutter, Dart, Python teams before dev conference
To be clear, it appears to be mutually beneficial still. It is just not as optimal as google would like it to be.
pylua··on Google lays off staff from Flutter, Dart, Python teams before dev conference
The python team is moving abroad, not undersizing. At least, that was my reading of it. I would argue this is different than over hiring. Over time, in cheaper areas, the hiring may even expand.
pylua··on Google lays off staff from Flutter, Dart, Python teams before dev conference
I agree with that point, some parts of a company can detract value or contribute negatively. For the teams affected recently, however, i think that would be hard to argue.

Everyone at the company contributes. Some people are in roles where the kpis may be harder to measure or that just have more risk in general. However, it is that risk taking that helps the company grow.

Bangalore is a very nice place. I have not had an issue with those things there, granted the level of inequality is very high. I also assume Munich does not have those problems either.

Moving away from support networks is one major challenge, however, there is a strong expat community there, not to mention people may have relatives in those places.

To the original point, if google just sees people as fungible cost centers, they will eventually dump their users, too. It will eventually be a Boeing, where employee / employee good will has been eroded, and no one takes pride in their work .

It’s only bad press in the us. There’s not a way to have good press here from a U.S. perspective. Its positive news for the other countries.

For one, a high cost employees savings could go a very long way in a low cost of living country.

Obviously, google sees something there — why wouldn’t the employee? If you have built your life around your trade, and the center of the trade moves, maybe you should consider moving. That may be easier than finding a new trade.

I think laying off employees without offering to move them to where they are shipping the jobs to is an example of poor treatment. While the employees acted with the utmost professionalism in their social media posts, you can tell that they are hurt.

I get it, it is just business, but the reality is that the world of business is built upon goodwill.

pylua··on Google lays off staff from Flutter, Dart, Python teams before dev conference
No, but I am starting to wonder if software innovation is being moved outside the U.S.
pylua··on Google lays off staff from Flutter, Dart, Python teams before dev conference
To be fair, they are not necessarily reducing headcount, they are just going to move the jobs to other places like Munich, Bangalore, Mexico?

Of course, if they are willing to treat their employees like this, they are likely to treat their users worse.

pylua··on Answering Legal Questions with LLMs
The industry would have to change drastically for that to occur. I don’t think it would be a bad thing, but it would be a fundamental shift and drastically raise the cost.
pylua··on Google lays off its Python team
Can you elaborate?
pylua··on Williams-Sonoma fined $3.18M for falsely labeling products 'Made in USA'
As a lay person, and not a lawyer, I'm not sure how this is not considered large scale fraudulent misrepresentation.

It seems like the fines are extremely light, and there is no real accountability. In the very least, they should be required to offer refunds to all people who bought those products.

pylua··on Did we lose our way in making efficient software?
There are a lot of nuanced features that explode in complexity when joined with other features. The number of permutations is massive, and handling those combinations of requirements is what modern day software is about.

Today’s software systems are more generalized, though they are solving the same business problems, just with more details / functionality than before.

pylua··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
The employees are probably very naive about the laws. The company needs their legal team to clearly explain the laws and recommend sufficient compliance actions to be taken by the employees.
pylua··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
A civil dispute does not imply a crime has been committed.

Being sued does not imply wrong doing.

pylua··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
I would have imagine most major ceos are on constant litigation hold considering the sheer volume of lawsuits.

If I am reading that correctly, the ceo got a litigation hold from internal legal nine months after the original issuance to Amazon ? That is also strange.

pylua··on Republic First Bank Seized by Regulators–First Bank Collapse of 2024
I feel like there are a lot of churches with similar names. Is this just an older institution thing ? Before the internet, was it best to have similar names ?
pylua··on US White-Collar Job Growth Stalls, Even in Pandemic Boomtowns
At some point, we will have to consider protectionism. There is a lot of downward pressure on wages with ai, offshoring, etc.

If there was a drastic decline in well paying, white collar jobs the tax collected may not be enough considering our debt.

pylua··on FTC announces rule banning noncompetes
If I have an existing non compete — what does this mean for me ? Is it invalid?
pylua··on TSMC's debacle in the desert: Missed deadlines and tension among coworkers
It’s never going to be cost effective if you can outsource to a country that has less stringent laws and regulations.

The government has other levers it can pull, such as tariffs.

It also looks like the Taiwan employees are reluctant to transfer domain knowledge, based on the article. They don’t want to have to compete with U.S. workers.

pylua··on TSMC's debacle in the desert: Missed deadlines and tension among coworkers
In my experience, U.S. citizens are not likely to sacrifice their bodies and life to an entity that can cut them off at will. That sort of dedication comes at an extremely high premium in the us.

Honestly, it is just business. The companies need to adapt and stop complaining.

pylua··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
This sort of breakdown seems to be happening across multiple industries. I mean, look at Boeing.
pylua··on SF exec defends 'brutal' tech trend
Honest question, What does skilled in ai even mean ? Knowing how to use the frameworks and apis, or knowing the foundations of the field.
pylua··on SF exec defends 'brutal' tech trend
I disagree. That used to be a cornerstone of the economy —- competing for labor, not just the customer.
pylua··on Hardest problem in computer science: centering things
There is challenging for the wrong reasons then there is challenging for the right reasons.

You will want to make sure you work on things that are challenging for the right reasons.

pylua··on Wayfair fired a bunch of people again today, after using them to train AI
Wasn’t this the company where the ceo urged everyone to work insane hours?

These people only care about themselves.

pylua··on Mental health in software engineering
It’s challenging for people because you are often put in positions you can’t control the outcome of.

All you can do is your best, and if you fail, there is little safety net to help you. At least in the U.S. major items are tied to your job.

You can also be put in situations where people want you to sacrifice like you have equity in the company, but at the same time treat you like you are replaceable.

There is also a lot of people that are willing to over promise and blame you when things fail. At the end of the day it is the company over everyone.

pylua··on 'My eyes hurt' searches spike on Google following solar eclipse
I feel the same way. I seem to be in the extreme minority in my family, however. I’m surprised more people aren’t more concerned.

It was overcast today where I live fortunately so it was basically a non event. I did however put on the cheap glasses and was surprised how poorly it fit ( like you said about side vision ).

pylua··on MQL – Client and server to query your db in natural language
Is this to be trusted with things that have to be accurate such as a subpoena ?

Besides, I feel like a data analyst should be able to know what questions to ask, not just how to translate business requests to sql.
