questiondev··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
i am trying to do the opposite, which in my case is get my first tech position. it is interesting to see the different reasons why people want to switch jobs.
questiondev··on Suicidal and depressed 55 yr old ex radio announcer homeless
it’s wild to think but a large amount of people who are homeless are actually anxiety ridden introverts that have very little connections to people who can help them out.

it would be one thing if we all started out on the same foot but we don’t, some things in life are just easier because of your circumstances.

a lot of people seem to not want to realize their own privilege. which is fine but when it comes to judging others we really cannot use the same scale because we all start out off different.

even two siblings can start out different enough where one has a bad leg up in society and the other doesn’t. mental health plays a large role in all of this.

questiondev··on Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and executive function in children
if you want to really know what types of hazards chemicals in your food check out the app yuka. i just started using it about 3 weeks ago, you’d be surprised what is in some food products. it gives you science data on the additives in a product. you just scan the upc code
questiondev··on Study: No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work
exactly, it’s funny how some people will downvote others for speaking what works for them. i’ll never understand that.

both kratom and coffee are related, kratom gets a bad rap because of headshops but people have been using it for all types of things for over 300 years with little to no issues.

there’s even some journals on it’s use with reducing some covid symptoms. not a cure but definitely seems helpful

questiondev··on Advice to startup founders: prepare to fail
i know for me assuming my business would fail was a natural assumption.

what i would like to see is more articles on bouncing back after a bad failure, or dealing with the rejection from friends and family during the building process.

mvp’s do not come over night so any advice on sticking in there until you have an mvp would be highly valuable especially with those of us who started out in extreme poverty and don’t have anybody else to look towards for support.

questiondev··on Study: No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work
bacon egg and cheese sandwich with some kratom tea works pretty well
questiondev··on Tumblr is at war with Apple over ‘mature’ content on its app again
apple exploits slave labor in china to build their products but is concerned about tumblr showing a female nipple
questiondev··on Amazon’s Alexa Stalled with Users as Interest Faded, Documents Show
a lot of people i know stopped using alexa out of privacy concerns. i wonder what percentage dropped off relating to privacy issues
questiondev··on Watching video twice at 2x can benefit learning better than once at normal speed
i have add, watching slow videos makes me tune out pretty fast.

i switched to 2x on certain videos and yeah i am able to learn because it’s not super drawn out

questiondev··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
it might have been law enforcement. they might be using this to track potential drunk drivers (i am not saying you were drunk driving or anything) but i do know there was a few articles on it this year, here is one i found

https://www.macrumors.com/2021/07/19/police-find-unexpected-...

or it could be worse and you could have a unhinged stalker on your hands. both are intrusive.

but it’s hard to say, is there a way to find out the owner or look at log files to see what op or which provider is accessing the location details of a tag? i know about these tags but i’ve never used one before so understanding is fairly fresh

questiondev··on Children born in the pandemic have significantly reduced cognitive performance [pdf]
i know some people said that covid-19 infection can cause brain fog in adults months after they recovered. there were also people saying that the vaccines may cause this as well. not saying i know exactly the reason for this, just pointing out arguments/news articles i read.

i will say that fear or how we handle fear can mess up learning, it’s kind of hard to take the basics seriously when the message being sent out is one of impending doom. we go into survival mode which forces us to make snap decisions in order to ensure safety. fight or flight response. our amygdala plays a huge part in learning and memory recall/storage

questiondev··on Unbreakable phone screens could be made with a new material
thank you for bringing this up, it’s one of those things that younger me did not understand, i see the pessimism surrounding new technology and i want to point out to doubters that it will take longer than they expect but it will come. like you mentioned oled.

a lot goes into building and refining the production process but once it starts, oh baby pandora’s box is open.

questiondev··on TikTok streaming software is an illegal fork of OBS
obs should be able to do a cease and assist, right? hopefully more, that’s illegal to steal someone’s code so they must give it back and pay possibly pay retribution’s depending on the judgement
questiondev··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
this is what i was thinking, i think it depends on the demographic but overall i heard that reading rates are way higher now due to the internet’s text content. granted reading books are great but i mostly read those online as well or audiobooks in the car
questiondev··on Windows 11 Officially Shuts Down Firefox’s Default Browser Workaround
one day operating systems will be “living”, and will be able to analyze and run code just from reading documentation and source files. completely sci-fi right now. anyways, microsoft shutting out firefox sounds anti-competition
questiondev··on Ten years of experience, still failing phone screens
yeah and if you are an anxious person like me, (i may be on the spectrum, i have some social issues), writing code in front of people makes me very anxious, it takes me back to my childhood when my dad would scream at me for being dyslexic, i got my b’s and d’s mixed up.

i know that is not what is happening during an interview but, it’s how i feel. and this prevents me from getting ahead in an industry i am madly passionate about

questiondev··on Rust support in the Linux kernel
turn every linux computer into a component of a supercomputer
questiondev··on Lead poisoning among US children
i worked construction for a bit, and you wouldn’t believe the exceptions we made for certain “historic” buildings. i remember discussing this with my foreman, we were in an impoverished area of the city that just so happened to be “historical” by the cities standards. i am a-ok with preserving the past but these engineers told us that when we pull out the old lead piping, we gotta replace it with another lead pipe to “preserve the historical value” of the property. this was the lateral going into the housing from the water main. do you realize how ridiculous that is? their excuse was that lead pipes deal with expansion and contraction better than pvc, or some other type of piping. and they said that the inside of the pipes are now coated with some type of sealant that keeps the lead from seeping into the residence water supply. so next time you buy a city property make sure you check the water laterals, you can get this information from the city engineering office. i think the records are found in the same building as where you get your construction permits but you’ll have to double check.
questiondev··on Improving GitHub Code Search
i was actually really surprised that this did not exist when i went to search github for the first time. you would think that an open source giant would have this ability but i guess there is a ton of computational load to achieve search in general. i’ll probably get downvoted for bringing up a whacky idea, but imagine having some type of referencing system that is done through multi node p2p, so searching certain systems using shared resources. i guess the major problem would be if devs would actually spare some of their personal computational resources to help the community find things and not rely on special interest groups. i get it, i am old school as well. i started out on pascal and BASIC. but still think using creative solutions is fun. but you know, napster was cool back in the day prior to their lawsuits. and p2p was starting to pick up speed
questiondev··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
they gotta answer to someone. this is getting ridiculous.
questiondev··on Twitter suspends account tracking Maxwell trial
i know, this just makes the conspiracy crowd more on edge about the whole thing
questiondev··on Human image synthesis from reflected radio waves
that’s cool and scary at the same time
questiondev··on Rust support in the Linux kernel
this would actually be a game charger to rust. considering the increase in the use for linux throughout the years
questiondev··on RNA Takes Over
you are right about this, i think HN posted an article on “junk” dna not being “junk” dna after all. this was about a month ago, it may have been on news.google.com if it was not on here, having read science breakthrough stuff throughout the years i was never convinced of that term and was more than cautious when tech subs started talking about how crispr alters “junk” dna, the general consensus before the pandemic was, “this is cool, but we must be careful, this technology may cause unexpected side effects” but during the pandemic or the peak of it, people were like “canon ball”, all caution to the wind. or seemed like caution was thrown to the wind. it’s surprising how fast we adopted this technology but we still gotta question if there is gonna be long term issues. there’s nothing wrong with questioning science, that’s actually what science is about.
questiondev··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
never worked for a tech company outside of projects or contracts i’ve done for people i know and my own ventures (small ventures), i’ve coded since i was 9 years old, started out in BASIC then took up pascal but now code (or script) javascript/react and have been looking into firms to work for, the stuff that was brought up to me made me feel like i have to protect my off the clock source code. the only reason why i was looking into working for someone else was to raise enough money to finish bootstrapping an unrelated startup. looks like my fears are valid
questiondev··on YouTube suspended my account for posting DeFi hackathon video
good point, these systems got worse when they decided to create an iphone app. apple loves censorship calling it “moderation”, sounds like a fair word until you realize it’s typically done on the wrong videos leaving the actual scam videos up. (there’s plenty of those still up)
questiondev··on 2049 and the dreams of Philip K. Dick
someone had to do it, thank you. ;
questiondev··on Sarco suicide capsule ‘passes legal review’ in Switzerland
my anxiety is getting the best of me whenever i see this type of stuff i always think of how a state can abuse it to get rid of people legally and use an excuse. but then again i am extremely distrusting of new “progress” in general.
questiondev··on Secretive Prisons That Keep Migrants Out of Europe
wow, this is something i didn’t even know about until i saw this post. makes a lot of sense now with how people are ignoring other crisis around the world. that’s sad
questiondev··on Startup valued at $7B gets flack as CEO lays off hundreds over Zoom
this is correct. it’s a sign a company is in trouble
