rawsyntax··on I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer?
Doctors and lawyers have continuing education requirements that have to be fulfilled to keep their licenses. This is in addition to day job.

For the record, enabling UUIDs in rails is straight forward. It's not the default though.

Why turn on UUIDs? They are not as guessable as normal IDs.

rawsyntax··on It's official: developers get better with age. And scarcer.
But if you started programming at 50... that's different than having done it for the last 30 years.
rawsyntax··on Why I love Git
Interesting.. I hadn't thought about using git as a form of rsync
rawsyntax··on Why I love Git
it replays your local commits on top of the changes you pulled down.
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: What is a typical startup job interview like?
It depends (on the particular startup). In my experience there isn't an average startup, they all vary quite a bit.
rawsyntax··on BitcoinHop - Online auctions with bitcoin payments
the site could use a FAQ. I'm not sure I'd like to give up my address and email and all that, not knowing exactly how the site works first.
rawsyntax··on Free app for memorizing Ruby on Rails terminal commands
pretty cool, but after 7 cards it repeatedly bugs me to register. I'd rather just run through the commands quickly, not register, and not necessarily rate how well I knew them.

That said, it did teach me a few new rails commands that I didn't know.

rawsyntax··on Ask HN: Want to join a startup, only have Fortune 500 experience
if you're worried about the startup community in your city, you can always try telecommuting
rawsyntax··on How i became a developer from coal miner?
Anecdotally, I got 130 upvotes, and something like 8000 visitors on a recent article posted here ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2597973 ), which is more like 60:1
rawsyntax··on Why I hate Ruby (or at least some common practices of its developers)
A better solution for monkey patching is in the works: http://yehudakatz.com/2010/11/30/ruby-2-0-refinements-in-pra...

That being said, any language feature can be abused and misused

rawsyntax··on MacOS X is an Unsuitable Platform for Web Development
If you don't like Mac don't use it. I find it to be a good dev platform, however I run prod on ubuntu and am familiar with using ubuntu too. I wouldn't expect my MacBook to solve deployment / sysadmin issues for me.
rawsyntax··on OS X Lion and its implications for web design
I agree with designing for mobile first, makes for a less cluttered UI
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: How to "fire" an app co-developer?
Pay the first developer fairly. Then move on
rawsyntax··on Apple's App Eating Binge
Looks like it's time for these apps to pivot. More / different functionality than what's coming in the new operating system

also disks are cheap, and flac amounts to a digital copy of the physical CD. You could decode it to the original WAV files from the CD if you wanted to

or telecommute
rawsyntax··on How to get a Programming Interview
Oddly enough, that's a point I didn't say much about. I've found that online communities like HN can be pretty good for getting interviews.

Especially the monthly "Who's hiring" posts.

rawsyntax··on "My iOS app is being pirated. Over 90% haven't paid for it. What can I do?"
Build a free version of your app. I suspect some of the pirates want to try your app for free.
rawsyntax··on My Lisp Experiences and the Development of GNU Emacs
I find that emacs ruby-mode slows to a crawl when editing a 6000 line ruby file. Now I realize the file is way too long ( these things take time to fix / refactor ), any tips on getting it to be more responsive?
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: Bootstrapped startup 'forced' to spend $10k. How?
Maybe they'll learn how along the way
rawsyntax··on The Story Behind Ruby 1.9.3 Getting 36% Faster Loading Times
there's always merb 1.1
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: Does the use of CoffeeScript improve your productivity?
IMO it improves developer happiness... whether that improves productivity dunno. For me, I doubt it would, I am using the very good js2-mode for emacs, which is able to issue warnings and error messages as I type, checking my javascript syntax as I go.
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: Would you use a service like MongoHQ, if so why?
I'm using it for my sideprojects. Heroku has an addon for mongohq. If it goes down, no biggie, it's just a side project.
rawsyntax··on Ask HN: Share your interview / hiring practices?
I wrote about the other side of it (the interviewee) here http://rawsyntax.com/post/6112439871/interviewing-for-progra...

FWIW, I don't think coding exercises help. I think the employer should require and example project that runs, and the source code to it. Many good developers have a side project that they can show off.

rawsyntax··on Snipt: Long-term memory for coders
Personally I prefer to use github gists
rawsyntax··on How to Persuade your Target Audiences
