rubyfan··on You lose 23 minutes of focus every Google or GPT use;
Based on the headline I was expecting an ad. Spoiler alert, it’s an ad.
rubyfan··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
Agree. IT has forgotten that computing should enable more people to be producers instead of mere consumers. IT management cares about control, audit, permissions and expense - no focus on achieving productivity in the workplace and in many cases are anti-user.
rubyfan··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
This, about so many other topics for young people.
rubyfan··on I'm Building LLM for Satellite Data EarthGPT.app
What does this use LLM to do that one couldn’t do or would be harder without the LLM?
rubyfan··on Astro is a return to the fundamentals of the web
I really appreciate that innovation can sometimes reinvent things that exist out of pure ignorance and sometimes hubris. I’ve seen people turn mountains out of molehills that take on a lore of their own and then along comes someone new who doesn’t know or is a little too sure of themselves and suddenly the problem is solved with something seemingly obvious.

I’m not sure javascript islands is that but I appreciate a new approach to an old pattern.

rubyfan··on Operators, Not Users and Programmers
I would add that the artificial divide is purposefully made worse in corporate environments. IT and Data & Analytics departments put curbs on user programmable anything typically in the name of expense. However, I would argue that these controls exist only to prop up the department’s managers and hand them an outsized role at the senior management table. It’s not just engineering snobbery that creates this divide, it’s a purposeful exertion of control for the sake of control.
rubyfan··on Ask HN: Worth leaving position over push to adopt vibe coding?
Quit.

How can you trust your economic welfare to be in the hands of people that believe in magic?

rubyfan··on Show HN: New Ensō – first public beta
reminded me of _why
rubyfan··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
This is interesting, it this an experiment or planning to make it real? What markets is it targeting?
rubyfan··on A Deep Dive into Solid Queue for Ruby on Rails
Queues are not a ruby specific thing, nor are they particularly pervasive within Rails apps. Having a good framework to handle them doesn’t make it the only tool in the tool belt. On the contrary, the fact that Rails has good tools to fit many different types of system architecture needs is a counterpoint of your assertion.
rubyfan··on A Deep Dive into Solid Queue for Ruby on Rails
You’re not missing anything and are correct in that there are plenty of reasons to use queues and defer work that can be handled asynchronously outside of a request/response. This is not specific to ruby or any language for that matter.

The parent indicated the cross region dynamic required extra routing logic and introduced debugging problems.

rubyfan··on A Deep Dive into Solid Queue for Ruby on Rails
Don’t be silly. Bad choices are made in all sorts of languages and teams - this has nothing to do with language. High pressure situations can lead teams to make choices they don’t always foresee as bad until after they are paying the consequences.
rubyfan··on A Deep Dive into Solid Queue for Ruby on Rails
Yeah this is not the fault of ruby. Sounds more like bad choices that could be made with any language or framework.
rubyfan··on Start your own Internet Resiliency Club
I’m almost to the point of turning the internet off on purpose. The noise level is so high it’s almost not worth it anymore.

(but I get this is geared towards communication resilience)

rubyfan··on Ruby on Rails Audit Complete
Yes, many people love programming in Ruby. It’s a matter of preference not some lack of technical merit. There are plenty of people who are well equipped in strongly typed languages that write in both. You might not know them but you really don’t have to look very far.
rubyfan··on Ruby on Rails Audit Complete
Can you elaborate on why you think method_missing is bloat?
rubyfan··on Show HN: Tritium – The Legal IDE in Rust
I’ve been dreaming of a better contract writing tool for a while now.

I’m not a lawyer but I draft insurance contracts and work with reviewing lawyers closely. As a former software developer I miss version control, partial includes, conditional logic, etc. I am shocked at how poorly supported the business world is by the ubiquity of MS Word.

I’ve been experimenting with Typst now for some time and it has a lot of what I want in creating and versioning documents but I believe may be too technical to become integrated with existing workflows and the non-technical users engaged in the development process. Basically my experience is normal users tune out once you get outside of even basic MS Word.

I really want a great tool to exist but I’m afraid I’m an outlier and unique in my technical ability in this space. Nice to see others interested in such a tool.

rubyfan··on Chatbots are replacing Google's search, devastating traffic for some publishers
Who would have thought we’d be looking for a better experience after Google let search turn to a steaming pile of shit filled with spam, popups and clickbait while violating our privacy with every vector possible?!?
rubyfan··on Curtis Yarvin's Plot Against America
Why are big media outlets suddenly sharing this guys ideas?
rubyfan··on Show HN: PunchCard Key Backup
Reminds me of the physical keys we’d in the army. Though they were designed to not be long lasting, I think they were paper strips that could be burned after using mission impossible style.
rubyfan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
Insurance policy administration system using Rails 8. HexaPDF based document generation. JSONLogic based rating with vanilla js WebComponent based embedded sales SDK. Think Stripe for Insurance sales.
rubyfan··on Watching AI drive Microsoft employees insane
FTPR

> It is my opinion that anyone not at least thinking about benefiting from such tools will be left behind.

This is gross, keep your fomo to yourself.

rubyfan··on Even Tesla's Insurance Arm Is Getting Wrecked
Probably not. Most of those vehicles at dealers would be covered under commercial policies separate from the loss ratios reported here. Also the backlash is more recent than the loss ratios reported (2024 results).
rubyfan··on Mississippi Can't Possibly Have Good Schools
yeah, they lost me at the use of the word “elites”
rubyfan··on Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies ‘produced in foreign lands’
I’ve applied a heuristic in my life to not trust anyone who promotes “transparency”. It sounds counterintuitive but in my experience this is just a tool of attack allowing them insinuate a scheme or conspiracy is at play and then to twist the narrative to what they want. Don’t trust them, trust me I’m transparent.
rubyfan··on Just redesigned my personal site with a TTY-style interface
That was fun, thanks for sharing!
rubyfan··on New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer
Why don’t we have cars talk to each other and coordinate their routing? Like some sort of peer to peer mechanism that helps them not crash each other. Why can’t vehicles be made to stop at cross walks when someone is crossing with some sort of communication to the vehicle?
rubyfan··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
The whole site seems sponsored by them?
rubyfan··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
Is this a reputable news site? There are some warning signs that make me believe it’s sponsored content. It feels less like news and more like propaganda?
rubyfan··on OpenBSD 7.7 Released
me too, it was an amazing experience that I still compare to current options and long for its simplicity.
