sandruso··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
Cross platform desktop app using tauri v2 which allows you to define shortcuts and bind them to prompts. You can then copy text, press the shortcut and paste result from gpt.

sandruso··on New junior developers can’t code
in similar vein gui tools for git killed the need of remembering commands. it is so painful watching somebody struggling with git when something "advanced" as rebase needs to done and they only know how to use git via vscode integration
sandruso··on No AI December Reflections
I agree that there are moments where the AI "read your mind". Where everything aligns perfectly. I had couple of these and that was magical.
sandruso··on No AI December Reflections
Yes, that supposed to be funny. The text was written by us humans.
sandruso··on Anthropic: "Applicants should not use AI assistants"
100%. Learning is effort. Exercising is effort. Getting better at anything is effort. You simply can't skip the practice that's the reality. If you want to *learn* something from scratch AI will only help with answers but you still need to put the time in to understand it.
sandruso··on Durable execution should be lightweight
I was playing with resumable execution and I agree that language-level support would be immense improvement. That said, I was able create library that would take javascript code and execute it line-by-line where after each line the state is stored but user needs to use state object to store all intermediate results which are persisted. But there is still problems if the computation fails during on some line. We can retry it but if it broke the entire execution state then we have a problem.

I wonder how to achieve the transaction-like (commit/rollback) behavior that will works across boundaries. Doing it on language-level is the way. Compiler/interpreter can handle all the state serializations.

sandruso··on Some flag emojis aren’t working on Chrome on Windows
Yep, can confirm that emoji flags are evil. We had same problem. Windows users reported missing flags and few google searches away we found out that emoji flags are not supported.
sandruso··on Rails is better low code than low code
There are maybe some but not as popular as Rails. I think everybody in node/js community advocated to build your own stack with libraries and write glue code yourself.
sandruso··on Show HN: Single source file react apps
Hello HN,

during past few days I was exploring concept of single source file applications where you can hide the build system.

I've cobbled together snaptail which hides nextjs build system and allows to work with just a single file.

It works great for fast prototyping or building an internal/local apps.

There is also support for API routes that can be exported via api variable.

An example:

  // myapp.tsx
  export const App = () => <div>Hello world!</div>
  export const api = [
    {
      method: "GET", path: "/api/hello",
      handler: async (req, reply) => {
        return reply.send({ hello: "world" });
      }
    }
  ];
  // shell:
  npx snaptail myapp.tsx
sandruso··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
https://snaptail.dev - during the past few days I was exploring concept of single source file applications where you can hide the build system.

sandruso··on Show HN: Open-source SDK for creating custom code interpreters with any LLM
Great, happy to see progress in this space! I've built demo for the same thing with same use-case couple day ago. Execute untrusted JS code.

Empowering user apps with code is way to go.

sandruso··on Show HN: De-clutter your VS Code experience
Looks good! I'll give it a try.

Do you plan to support vue sfc files?

sandruso··on How companies use dark patterns to keep you subscribed
My recent story on linkedin.

I subscribed for premium as I was eligible for free month. I did use one-time card as I wanted to unsubscribe before end. Of course I forgot to that. It tried to charge the card but it failed. When I tried to cancel the subscription it said I have attached invalid card.

Okay I will remove card and cancel subscription. Oh, no so fast. I couldn't remove card because I had "active" subscription. It was circular deadlock.

Finally I found way to unsubscribe on their plan picking page after few minutes of frustration. I hope this is QA issue and not intentional.

sandruso··on Ask HN: What would you recommend a 16 year old to pursue career wise?
The most obvious (in hindsight) thing I learned during finding purpose was: You see the world through your experiences. You can’t really ask yourself what you like when you know anything outside of your current worldview.

This can be applied to anything. How can you solve problems when you don’t know about them? How can you find your purpose when you did’t try 99.9999% of possible activities.

Just do it and maybe it will resonate with you.

sandruso··on A book teaching assembly language programming on the ARM 64 bit ISA
It is fundamental knowledge, but you can skip it thanks to higher levels of abstraction.

In the end everything is just bunch of ones and zeroes and clever hardware architectures.

Nand2tetris is great source for figuring out whether this is something you want to get in to.

sandruso··on A book teaching assembly language programming on the ARM 64 bit ISA
Understanding lower levels can be satisfying for certain type of people. I find it very useful when you can reason about stuff that is mostly invisible to other people. But if you are building web apps then this stuff is 95% useless as you can’t leverage the knowledge because web apps are much higher level.

If you are curious about this stuff definitely look into it. It may be worth to you.

sandruso··on Ask HN: Why do you prefer native desktop apps?
To clarify, I meant native as build with native platform gui . No electron no web views.

I’m curious because everytime a topic about desktop pop ups GUI I see passion about it and sentiment native good and electron bad.

sandruso··on Functional programming should be the future of software
Sure npm is not silver bullet. But I want the npm experience. Technical implementation can be improved as you say and I agree.
sandruso··on Functional programming should be the future of software
The npm install experience should be baseline for newer languages. Simply let me get into hacking fast. This is one of the top reason I like tinkering with JS because it just works. (Yes, I know all weaknesses of JS ecosystem, but getting is really easy)
sandruso··on Node.js HTTP client axios pushes broken update breaking production apps
I don't use axios often, but if I need to intercept requests, or set global headers I always need to wrap my fetch function and creating my own "axios". Axios can do these things without hassle.
sandruso··on Node.js HTTP client axios pushes broken update breaking production apps
Fetch is low level. Axios is battery-included
sandruso··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
Wish you well!

Did you work from home? Because my attention span also dropped significantly during covid. What helped was getting out of the house to get some work done.

sandruso··on Ask HN: Best examples of end-user facing documentation
You always start with a search. You want something, you know what you want to find. I think the structure is important for discovery ie API docs. Knowledge bases often lack content that’s why stack* sites exist.

You can check apple support, its multi-step process where in each step they ask you a question which narrows down possible issues. I think this is foolproof for problem diagnostics.

sandruso··on The sum of all knowledge and the sorry state of the web
Its good to remind myself this . Not once I thought I know something after watching a summary video. When I tried to explain the topic to somebody else I struggled. If you can’t explain you know nothing. Simple as that.
sandruso··on The future of documentation at Canonical (2021)
This. Everybody should try call API / functions without actual implementation to see if it feels right.
sandruso··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
I'm currently building a tool for generating website just from a text content as an input. It tries to figure out what layouts would match the content.

Why?

Because creating these websites quickly is always content problem. We should start from content and create a design according to content not other way around.

sandruso··on Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro/Air users, how is it going?
Second that. Definitely get the 16GB air version. The 8GB has problems when running more programs.
sandruso··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
During covid we did online classes where teachers present the slides and everything was recorded. I built a simple program that sliced videopresentation into slides and also sliced the audio for every slide. It was convinient to go through presentation slide by slide and play audio what teacher said during the slide.
sandruso··on The Vale Programming Language
Github may show a warning when creating repo about all possible name collisions. We see this problem often. If anybody from GH is listening :)
sandruso··on 90% of software engineering done today is integrating poorly documented APIs
When I saw this I thought about what S. Jobs said once: something like “We think about problem and work out the tech for it backward”. If the best solution is to use some APIs then go for it. The focus should be on the problem. We like tech we are using but these are just tools like any others.
