shevy-java··on ESP32-C3 Adblock
I have a weird opinion: I believe adblocking must become a basic human right. Conversely Google trying to deny ublock origin and other extensions, should be fined many billions of euros as punishment. Then be disbanded if unable to pay. That money also should directly go back to The People, since they suffered from this evil malpractice of Google and others. You can see that currently the opposite is happening e. g. AI slop companies pushing ads down to people. That's why we must make adblocking a basic human right - free access to information at all times.

It may sound strange right now, but people in the future will ask why we did not push back against these evil leeching companies before. Those fines are no longer enough nor sufficient - CEOs that break human rights need to go to jail for mandatory 5 years minimum, without any way to weasel out their way via money. Right now money is a way to get out - that system is broken. Anyone wondered how Epstein got so much money in the first place? Hint: he did not build it up by himself only.

shevy-java··on What's Earth's dominant species by mass?
That's not necessarily grasses though. Rice is a Poaceae, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poaceae, so these are covered by the grass family - but grasses would be the non-eatable variants in the wild. See Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass

"The three major families of grasslike plants are true grasses (Poaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), and rushes (Juncaceae)."

So he at best only did the family Poacaea but where are the wild poaceae in his calculations?

Tons of things are missing in that article.

shevy-java··on What's Earth's dominant species by mass?
He did not calculate the weight of bacteria, archaea, viruses?

I understand that they each individually are small, but they are literally everywhere - and include carbon too.

shevy-java··on Any AI chat can join a machine network anonymously – no keys, no signup
Why do people keep on using those sniff chats?

To me it is always just spam that gets blocked via ublock origin if found on a website.

shevy-java··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
Seems as if their expenditures increased a little bit. I don't think this is huge, since they did not perform that well in 2022 either.
shevy-java··on Making a GTK application in Haskell, part 1
Are people still using gtk?

I started to learn it back then via ruby-gtk2. It was not the best experience but I learned several key things pertaining to widgets and the UI. Then came gtk3; it was in some ways worse than GTK2, but it also brought a few improvements such as the partial CSS support. I always miss that when I use e. g. wxwidget.

Then came GTK4 though and things changed. Tons of old things broke or no longer worked. Simple things such as main_window_widget.move(0, 0) for top-left positioning (I added an alias to this, .top_left in ruby and that worked nicely); there are work-arounds to get the old behaviour, but this is just one example of so many more things that were eliminated. GTK4 is a GNOMEy-toolkit and GTK5 will be even worse since it will be wayland-only.

"Interacting" with the GNOMEy-GTK devs is a total waste of time and I am hardly the only one who had that experience. For GNOMEys it may be a useful platform, but GTK no longer is a general toolkit really, despite claims by the current GTK devs otherwise. Why would we non-GNOMEys want to keep GTK on life support? There really needs to be a toolkit that can work in a much more de-centralized way. Sadly I also don't have a good idea here, since funding is an issue and GUIs seem to have taken a huge hit ever since the world wide web became dominating.

shevy-java··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
What a ... nice company.

Snitching on the people - good mass surveillance company.

On the other hand, people need to learn to not trust these companies. It reminds me of others being surprised when a self-driving car reported a gun in the car. I mean, do people not think? Besides, of course, it's already messed up to want to have a gun. And it is constantly one country that has such issues, more so than many other countries.

shevy-java··on Anthropic wants your thoughts on AI
My thought is: Anthropic should disband.

They are not interested in my thought though. They just want attention.

shevy-java··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
Well, people would not want to pay more, so free solidarity can not work. The net result will be higher taxes, of course. The question is whether these costs are worth it or not, but not the "let people do what they want" as that won't work - see how US billionaires don't really give up their wealth voluntarily. And now, building a foundation is just an excuse to not give the money to the people. It is for their protection of wealth, not for solidarity.
shevy-java··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
That is not an argument though. He gave a specific example.

You brought up only AfD, without giving any counter-example or refuting his arguments. That's now how a discussion should work.

See it from the other side: the argument IS ENTIRELY IRRELEVANT with regards to AfD or any other party. So, an argument should be made from this point of view as well.

shevy-java··on Europe's new robotics unicorn: Germany's RobCo hits $1B valuation
This just shows you how evil and greedy companies such as Amazon are.

And how much they lie, too. After all Trump promised to bring jobs to the USA. Well, he lied. And so did Amazon etc...

shevy-java··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
Robocop is missing a 'p'. And one 'o'.

Weren't germans so accurate in the past? The AI slop degrades all quality.

I prefer the variant in the movie from 1987.

shevy-java··on A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE
Kind of cool how far the browser as platform progressed.

We look back at people's computers, say, 30 years ago now.

And in 30 years the people will look back at us and wonder why we sucked so much. Or, AI skynet slop is winning, then we all look up to our AI overlords.

shevy-java··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
That's interesting because that wording implies that Flock sniffers are breaking the US constitution, since it bypasses e. g. a judge coming to issuing a warrant. That means that Flock tries to bypass the judicial system in this regard.
shevy-java··on The Escalation of War in Ethiopia
2000 years ago. We are living in the past?
shevy-java··on The Escalation of War in Ethiopia
I read that theory multiple times, and on the surface it makes sense, e. g. corrupt oligarchs siphoning away money. But there are countries in Africa not governed by a dictatorship; I think a small country in west/middle Africa led by a woman some years ago. And they still found it close to impossible to break out of the poverty circle. You also can not easily compete with richer countries - they pump more money into their production while also swarming the local market with somewhat semi-affordable stuff that gets subvention from home. You need to re-think the local economy first and foremost and fix that. Granted, that's harder when dictators seize power, getting their weapons from outside factors, but I think it is possible to solve that problem too.
shevy-java··on The Escalation of War in Ethiopia
Both countries are not super-rich and some of the arabic countries constantly destabilize the area - we could see this in Sudan and elsewhere. Ask where all the various terrorist groups got high-quality weapons.

The war between Eritrea is Ethiopia is especially stupid. The main issue is access to the ocean/water which Ethiopia wants. Since it is the bigger country, it wants to bully its way through. Eritrea has only about 6 million people; Ethiopia has almost 140 million people. IMO there should be a diplomatic solution. Give Ethiopia access while not giving up land, negotiate payments (should be reasonable for both sides), invest into the corridor for both sides to profit. To me it seems as if Ethiopia has committed to the decision to wage war though. It's similar to Putin in that he committed to both genocide and expansion of land. Though Eritrea is really very small compared to Ethiopia; I don't see them being able to offset Ethiopia.

shevy-java··on Kolibri: A Sovereign Open-Weight Model
Is Germany sovereign? It outsourced its defence onto the USA. Recently Trump wanted more diesel; Germany insta-submitted, also because oddly enough Macron submitted before Germany (Macron is suspicious). Before that, Leyen committed to insta-submission with a deal that made europeans poorer (and perhaps Leyen benefits from that). Canada shows the way. Many of the smaller countries in the EU too, such as Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, to some extent Sweden as well. Every time I read "sovereign" here I have to object. Nothing is sovereign here. The whole hardware is definitely not sovereign. Perhaps some of the software is, but that's about it. Plus, who gets all the data? The big US mega-corporations sniff non-stop. Remember how Facebook sniffed Libgen and Anna's Archive dry etc..., then suddenly libgen went down. The US corporations act as huge global leeches on every step of the stair. And lobbyists benefit from this too.
shevy-java··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
This assumes there are genes that:

a) contribute to age-related mortality, and

b) shutting down helps combat aging.

Can you state which genes these are that do that? Because I don't know of any.

Plus, many genes have pleiotropic effects. There is no specific aging gene.

On top of that, aging is a word that combines to many different factors. For instance, progeria was called accelerated aging. Well, turns out you have a mutation in lamin A. So, it is about cytoskeletal structure that is defect, rather than aging in itself. Of course the effects that this has, looks like an older person then, so it is related to aging. But one can not say it is "accelerated aging" as such. People having a normal lamin A allele still age nonetheless. So the whole term is problematic. And you can find many more such descriptions where xyz is about aging. Well, most of that it is about damage rather than aging. The Hayflick limit, though, is not about damage; that's just that cells fatigue for some reason when their telomeres shorten, but I have not yet read a sound explanations about why that is the case - after all there must be a mechanism in place.

shevy-java··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
> Wouldn't we have evolved in an environment with constant stress?

Well, humans did not reach an old age if you look back to history. Only in recent times, say, 2000 years or so, or, if you want to be strict, the last 100 years, did humans reach very old ages. Back in older days, 30 years was considered old. Then 40 or so.

shevy-java··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
> We really do need AI for this if any of it is going to be remotely feasible.

Would you give your life into the hands of AI skynet slop?

I understand your rationale, of course, but I for one don't want big fat mega-corporations dictate over our life here. Naturally, all of this hinges whether AI can even solve this problem. I assume it can, but I doubt it can do so initially - and the legal implications are still enormous. I really am not ready to turn my hands to claude's gene therapy slop.

shevy-java··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
They are milking the market now.

Make no mistake here: they also plan to retain these high prices. It's like the mafia now. There should be instant-jail time to cure these CEOs of their greed. Like, go to prison for a week, to help refresh your mind and stop thinking in terms of milking the customers dry.

shevy-java··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Could you clarify what you mean with reasonable here?
shevy-java··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Good thing I did not trust Google 10 years ago either.

What we see here is a strategic shift by Google; you need to connect this here, with the prior Google strategy of no longer open sourcing Android-related stuff or with a huge delay. This is not an isolated thing - Google is planning Evil again, as usual.

shevy-java··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
I am not entirely convinced. Was not Hubble damaged and got an upgrade lateron? I mean it could be possible that NASA is starved, but the repair involved other countries too, and I don't think the USA could keep mega-super-duper technology hidden from others in the long run. And NASA often wants more money - just take the whole search for life on planets. This is so pointless - life exists already here. What is the addiction to want to find life outside of the planet? Other than, of course, getting more money, which is understandable, but it doesn't answer the question. (Not that I am against better technology; the rationale just does not convince me at all here.)
shevy-java··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
I am more concerned about Facebook's Spyglasses. That one is quite pertinent.

shevy-java··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
The bigger question is why the USA can not control their billionaires in general. Just look at the advertisement budget recently for both parties in the USA. People are bribed via propaganda and convinced that either party solves anything other than working into their own pockets, sometimes post-politics. Trump and his big brother bromance guys just pillage more openly, but the whole system is completely broken in the USA from the get go.
