> Hirschhorn’s attorney told the Times that "she was not required to pay rent because the city had never approved the unit for occupancy and that its shower was constructed without a permit."

This type of smarmy legal thinking drove me nuts as an attorney and was one of the factors that led to me becoming a software dev.

Do these attorney's demand a substantial retainer up front? It is quite the risk, requiring high levels of both dissonance and intestinal fortitude to contort the law to vigorously represent an admitted deadbeat.

But I am one to cast stones. I was successful in my criminal defense practice and enjoyed the client work. It's working with other attorneys that was the problem.

Agreed. On the finance side, typically each store has a shrink allowance as a % of sales. The account is adjusted following the periodic inventory audit (usually annually). It rolls up to cost of goods sold so it is reflected in the margin.

So if shrink was forecast at 0.75% of sales but actually came in lower the store would see better margins on their financials.

Does anyone know if the Linux foundation makes their financial statements available?

My cursory glance turned up the slick annual presentation type report, but I am looking for the 3 basics, income statement, cash flow, and balance sheet, audited or unaudited.

An aside, I think Linux is a true modern marvel of humanity, it really is people at their best. It's a bummer when in-fighting and drama pop-up, but I guess it comes with the territory and its part of the sausage making.

These e-ink projects always grab my attention, I guess it may be the hacker spirit of such endeavors (we did it because we can).

While they are neat, I'm left wondering what are some real world use cases, personal or business, where e-ink would be superior?

Took a big leap and landed in Europe from TX. Pay is lower, but is offset by being able to walk to work, reduced stress, and a sane work life balance. I still make enough and feel like I've been able to save more due to not owning a car.

Overall, my quality of life increased greatly and I hope you find your place to (not to sound cliché) live your best life. Our time is so limited and living in limbo is no fun.

soderfoo··on Goodreads is terrible for books – why can’t we all quit it?
Had to look it up as well:

'Sealioning' is a form of trolling meant to exhaust the other debate participant with no intention of real discourse. [0]

soderfoo··on New York Is Full. And it’s the housing market’s fault
The inept Federal government is at fault and has been for decades.

The incompetence and inaction demonstrated by the legislative branch on issues clearly within their purview (e.g.immigration) is stupefying. This behavior would surely result in termination in the private sector, why is it continuously tolerated in by voters?

Stockholm is creepily quiet sometimes. I say this as a New Yorker who needs some kind of background ruckus to sleep.
soderfoo··on How the recession doomers got the U.S. economy so wrong
Does anyone else have difficulty reconciling these Happy Days Are Here Again type articles, with the more somber slice of life type?

For example, I came across this article titled The Tragedy of Being a New Mom in America immediately after reading this article about the economy [0]. The contrast between 'everything is great' and 'everything is terrible' seems stark.

It was democratic/independent Sen. Joe Lieberman who killed the public option.[0]

Party is an abstract to these people, it's all about interests. In Lieberman's case, one of his interests was to protect the health insurance industry which contributed more than $1M to his campaigns over the years. [1]

soderfoo··on Visa-free travel to Europe for U.S. citizens to end in 2024,requiring ETIAS form
I'm nostalgic for the pre-9/11 flying experience well except for one thing: anyone being allowed to wait at the gate.

Imagine the mad house if friends and family could accompany a traveler to the gate, or wait for their loved one to arrive?

soderfoo··on Visa-free travel to Europe for U.S. citizens to end in 2024,requiring ETIAS form
The Queen Mary 2 sails from Southampton to NYC [0].

I think you can get a ticket for less than $1k,though you'd probably be cramped with no window.

soderfoo··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
Mixed episodes and the inevitable downward swing to depression.

Mixed episodes are no joke, I've experienced a couple and hope to never do so again.

soderfoo··on History vs. Hollywood: Oppenheimer
It was relatively secluded. Federal agencies already owned and controlled 90% of the land needed for the site and the local residents were mostly homesteaders granted grazing permits by the Federal government. Landowners for the remaining 10% were compensated through the process of eminent domain.

Utilities and roads were built to access the seized land.

Maybe the process could have been more humane, but it is easy to sit back in the comfort of the 21 century and feign outrage. The nation was facing existential challenges and the war machine required sacrifice from all civilians.

This kind of context would go a long way in fostering better conversations. In regards to this tweet, it would have been nice for the author to acknowledge that while the Hispanos' grazing permits for the land were withdrawn, it was their sacrifice for the war effort.

I've been wanting to take sailing lessons but I'm worried my queasiness will rear it's ugly head.

soderfoo··on FBI improperly used 702 surveillance powers on US senator
Any recommendations for a book about Hoover?

I just finished reading The Devil's Chessboard about Allen Dulles and the nascent CIA. It's a great book if you haven't read it.

soderfoo··on FBI improperly used 702 surveillance powers on US senator
The FBI is never a good bedfellow.

The winds change and each party has their turn sharing a common enemy with the bureau. With righteousness and zeal, they claim the throne of patriotism.

I'm not sure if it's dissonance or political opportunism, or a mix.

I would like to think anyone with some knowledge of US history would be weary and proceed with caution whether they find themselves in alignment with authorities or not.

soderfoo··on Threads has 10M sign ups in seven hours
>Twitter is more hostile than it's ever been.

>The first time a blog post is written about the Epic Dunk that AOC had on Ted Cruz...

How do you reconcile these two statements?

I feel the performative "mic drop" moment is a major source of toxicity on Twitter. A breath of fresh air would be a place that promoted thoughtful and empathetic conversations.

soderfoo··on So long “prompt engineering,” we hardly knew ya
It felt like a mix to me. People seeking to enhance their work and the low effort high reward seeking hustle bros.

The latter latches on to the surface level of any new tech but proceeds with swagger befitting a Nobel laureate.

soderfoo··on Whole-brain connectome of the fruit fly
As I age, it feels like the level of detail algorithm and optimization code are due for some updates.

Skimming a text varies from high to moderate fidelity some days.

soderfoo··on Whole-brain connectome of the fruit fly
Visual processing requires an astounding amount of brain power. Over 50% of a fruit flies brain cells are dedicated to their rudimentary visual system.

Comparatively, the human visual processing system is truly astonishing and I am grateful for it.

Double roundabout?!? Madness! I would rage quit and just walk if I encountered anything like this.

It is so absurdly and satirically British.

soderfoo··on Supreme Court Rejects Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
Government policy, however well intentioned, created this system of incentives to encourage and boost college enrollment. Further exacerbating the problem are special intrest groups (lenders and schools) who salivated at the thought of a blank check from the feds.

I think it's silly to view this in a way that generates ill feelings for folks who pursued education. The blame falls on the government, lenders and schools. They should bear the cost of any forgiveness.

soderfoo··on Microwaved plastic containers release microplastics into food
FWIW the USDA says plain paper towels are fine to wrap food while microwaving [1]. But I agree with the notion of wanting to minimize exposing food to toxins. I try to limit my microwave usage all together and prefer the oven for reheating food.

soderfoo··on Supreme Court Rejects Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
Agreed that education costs should be driven down, but the strain on borrowers is very real. It's bothersome that the government prohibits relief in the form of bankruptcy.

It's easy to be unsympathetic when something doesn't impact you personally. I'm not impacted by student loans, but I've heard enough stories from close friends to give me pause.

I am very empathetic to their plight and worry we have knee capped a sizeable portion of a generation, which will impact the economy and society as well.
