Back in the day you needed a bnc if you wanted chat history. The mobile experience has been abysmal until very recently.

Also when discord came out there was a certain appeal to having voip built into the same app, and not having to maintain a separate vent/mumble/ts.

It really did whip the llama’s ass.
stackghost··on Ask HN: What's your favorite children's books?
I really wanted to like Iggy Peck, Ada Twist, and Rosie Revere, because they promote really positive messages. But man, the verse is really clumsy and poor in some areas. Not stellar writing.

To add to your list: anything by Julia Donaldson. The Gruffalo, Super Worm, Room on the Broom, the Whale and the Snail.

Perennial favs when my kids were 3-5

stackghost··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
Americans are so bizarrely tolerant of having a food supply chock full of highly-processed, artificial everything.

The answer always seems to be “we don’t like these big companies putting additives in food but we’ve tried nothing and are all out of ideas”

stackghost··on M7.6 Earthquake in Panama
It is, but there's a subduction zone just off their northern coast following the curve of the Lesser Antilles so I could see how someone might mistakenly lump it into the pacific ring. It's not that far away from the northern Andes, in the grand scheme of things.
stackghost··on Telnet BBS Guide
>Unfortunately it lost one of the most compelling features of the classic BBS culture: location bias.

I was thinking about trying to recapture this with a non-internet wifi or mesh networking setup in some way.

Maybe one could abuse the captive portal feature.

It would not have the broad regional aspect unless it was a federated mesh, but it would certainly have the local bias. I don’t think there are enough techy people in my immediate vicinity to pull something like that off and have the community sustain itself, though.

Where do you live that you don’t know the people in your neighbourhood?
stackghost··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Many Linux ISOs are distributed via torrents.

Ask yourself what other types of media can be had on popular torrent sites.

stackghost··on Account bans on Reddit
In some ways, the discovery difficulty is a feature, since as soon as something goes viral it tends to turn to shit.
stackghost··on Account bans on Reddit
> What am I missing?

You’re missing that the content you want to post is the definition of spam.

The system is working as intended.

stackghost··on Account bans on Reddit
Have you considered that you are literally spamming? Buy an ad if you want to advertise.
stackghost··on Account bans on Reddit
I have little sympathy for TFAuthor failing to spam their slop on Reddit, but I will say that Reddit pretty definitively replicated the key findings and observations of Usenet’s eternal September: online communities don’t scale.

I’d wager that there was a time when a supermajority of Anglosphere internet users were on Reddit. I could see why that’s enticing for the advertising douchebags that run Reddit, or perhaps for stroking Steve’s planet-sized ego.

But we’ve seen at least twice now that large online communities are not workable without becoming user-hostile. We need to reduce federation and centralization, and normalize smaller online communities again.

stackghost··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
Gamers won’t tolerate cloud gaming for long. I remember when QuakeLive was supposed to revolutionize publishing. Cheat free games!

Except the UX is horrid. If studios will certainly try it but there will be massive backlash.

stackghost··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
>This is why Lisp never catches on.

>[…]The same thing happens in other languages with macros (like C and assembler).

Uh, C definitely caught on.

stackghost··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
Common Lisp is not a functional language. You can write functional-paradigm code in CL but it will happily let you write old-school imperative style, OOP, etc.

The de facto open source implementation, SBCL, has a solid compiler and garbage collector. It produces fast code.

stackghost··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
They have that, it’s Indycar.

F1 has always been about the combination of excellence in driving and in engineering.

stackghost··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
The entire purpose of traction control is to reduce the driver skill required when cornering and braking. This is why traction control is omnipresent in consumer vehicles, because the vast majority of road drivers are awful.

FIA bans traction control so as to place more emphasis on driver skill.

How about you just answer instead of being cute?
stackghost··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
It’s a perversion of the truth which is that officers or directors of a corporation have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders to act in the interests of those shareholders and not to eg enrich themselves.

But that doesn’t mean the duty is to maximize next quarter’s profit. Long term sustainability is also broadly in the interests of shareholders. The duty likewise does not require one to throw ethics and morals out the window.

This is why shareholders elect the board of directors, in theory.

The US obstinately behind the rest of the world in many ways.

American exceptionalism at its finest.

> I wonder if the author also agrees with DHH’s racist opinions.

Suppose you hold viewpoint A, and so does DHH. Suppose further you have no idea who DHH is. I, for example, had never heard of him before 2024.

Suppose now that you discover DHH also has racist opinions.

By the sentiment you express in your comment, logic demands that you now change your preexisting viewpoint A because it’s now shared with a racist. Is that what you’re advocating?

stackghost··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
Most of the tech unicorns are like this. Zuckerberg caught lightning in a bottle one single time and everything they’ve tried since has sucked. Instagram was an acquisition. So were oculus and WhatsApp. By contrast their next in-house flagship was temu Wii avatars.

Amazon hasn’t built anything innovative since the Kindle.

Surely it’s a consequence of being publicly traded that these companies cease to be able to develop good novel products rather than acquire competitors or iterate on past successes.

stackghost··on Two American Airlines Flights End Up with the Same Flight Numbers
Root cause:

> American assigns the same flight number to the outbound and return services, with the same aircraft typically operating both legs.

Other airlines don’t do this, and instead assign a different flight number to the return flight.

stackghost··on Apple Pass Designer
I’m curious what it does that Claude or Codex can’t. Fundamentally it’s just producing an image with a QR code on it, right?
stackghost··on Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal
I think the point is that in an article about Nazi Germany, editorializing "Hitler" to add "Adolf" is probably not required because almost every adult in the English-speaking world knows who Hitler was.
