task_queue··on Amazon's New Plan to Pay Authors Every Time Someone Turns a Page
If you disagree with this practice, you're free to choose from one the competitors which engage in the same collection activities.
task_queue··on How for-profit prisons have become the biggest lobby no one is talking about
The people constructing the prisons also construct schools, hospitals and buildings that society needs. There isn't a lobby of people solely benefiting from the construction of prisons other than the owners that the prison is built for.

Prison unions are a big problem, as well. They bring many of the same problems to the table. California's is a great example of just how easily these groups can manipulate the system for their benefit.

The state at least can be swayed by representatives and public initiative. As an entity, it doesn't exist only to turn a profit.

It isn't perfect, but handing the entire system over to people who only care about the bottom line will accelerate the problem.

task_queue··on How for-profit prisons have become the biggest lobby no one is talking about
I agree with your point about how the law drops the ball when it comes to rehabilitation.

A real issue IS who owns or manages the prisons. If the profit motive is what drives prison expansion, then society will experience a form of regulatory capture in hyperacceleration.

Many of those programs and processes are being taken over by private entities. You are no long just paying out to your municipality, county, state or country. You're paying out to them and the private company who demands your payment or you go to back to prison for non-payment. They still profit and your debt racks up.

You are paying out fees to the private company for your detention, your lodging, your processing and probation on top of what the state is paying them to hold you. If you cannot pay them back, you are free to spend a day in jail for each $10-$40 of your debt owed to your captors. They get to collect from the state as well.

Then, with the money they've been collecting, the private entities go and lobby to make sure there is a steady stream of constant offenders to keep profits increasing every quarter.

Sometimes it makes sense to bribe judges to send innocent children to your private juvenile detention center to collect those fat state grants, a la Cash for Kids.

The profit motive perverts justice and seeks to turn everyone into customers of the private justice system.

As a someone looking for a payment processor, I now know that the only way we'd be lucky enough to receive support is if we wrote a Hacker News thread that made it to the front page.

It's weird to find out this way, as I was procrastinating on HN instead of researching.

task_queue··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
It's a new protocol that needs to be accepted on top of the blockchain with its own 3rd party sidechain, just like all the other proposed solutions that were never accepted by the community. Cool.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is still 7 TPS.

task_queue··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
Why would the world shift from a currency that is economically and politically entrenched via trade and treaty?

What would Bitcoin solve that the USD doesn't?

Why would the world accept a technological "solution" whose implementation already contains dire technical problems?

What makes you think hyperinflation is a realistic outcome?

If I grant you a world that decides fiat model is Bad, why would they choose a system that is inherently centralized? One whose early adopters and hoarders have been manipulating the crypto-currency market for their advantage for years? One whose transaction history is public to _everyone_? One that only has a handful of gatekeepers, that have been proven to work with governments and have been caught delaying transactions to profit from the change in the price in Bitcoin?

task_queue··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
How are you twisting debt crises into a pitch for Bitcoin, the most centralized, 100% traceable and accountable crypto-currency on the net?
task_queue··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
I want to live in the world where only 7 transaction can occur a second.
task_queue··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
There are more people trying to get Mickey Mouse into the White House than there are competent people with realistic opinions about Bitcoin.

task_queue··on I've been scrubbed
No reason to sound all conspiracy theorist.

It's happened in the past, the same drives that motivate "disappearances" haven't gone anywhere and we're a country with a recent history of disappearing people to black sites to never be seen again.

Inconvenient content is buried or erased on the internet all the time. Entire events have been tried to be erased from the from the internet (think Great Wall).

Nothing is more inconvenient than Joe Citizen catching you red handed and making it public.

Monitoring or shutting down social media and chat services is one of the first thing that happens during a political upheaval. Violence and people dying in the streets is inconvenient.

task_queue··on Why I faked being black for med school
> extreme poverty, abuse, disability,

This was me and, in America, I am still more privileged than a black person in my position when it comes to education, loans, work, law enforcement and discrimination in general.

task_queue··on Why I faked being black for med school
A classic case of "the real racists are the ones who mention race."

To address the real problems of continued systemic racism that existed from the founding of our country, we cannot simply put our race blinders on and pretend we're a post racial society.

You're ignoring that there are inherent racial advantages in admissions already.

It is morally offensive that, as a society, we've proven to be unwavering in our racism until we are forced to address it.

task_queue··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
No it doesn't. Subsidies, social programs and massive regulations hold up our market for food.
task_queue··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
That's great for pricing most commodities, but for necessities it is disastrous.
task_queue··on When I lost my hands making flatscreens I can't afford, nobody would help me
It's unacceptable to "mitigate risk enough" because laborers are motivated by the fact that they have needs and dependents' needs that have to be met. That is their motivation for working anywhere.

They have no other recourse but to engage in the time <-> compensation transaction.

Because of this, people lose their agency to act a truly free agent in that transaction.

Companies have the privilege of total knowledge of their facilities and processes. They also know there is a teeming pool of people that will take shit jobs because food and shelter is a necessity.

There is an asymmetry in that relation that allows some pretty evil things to happen as history has shown.

We've decided that pulling the "it was truly informed consent" card is a dishonest way to describe that transaction, because desperate people will be injured and killed so an employer can save a buck.

task_queue··on When I lost my hands making flatscreens I can't afford, nobody would help me
You are knowingly and directly allowing a child slave driver to profit from your purchase.

Where exactly do you absolve yourself of guilt in that transaction?

task_queue··on Facial recognition technology is everywhere, and it may not be legal
Let it be known that an entire continent's economy has been suffocated because of warning boxes on users' computer screens.
task_queue··on Facial recognition technology is everywhere, and it may not be legal
It's demonstrably incapable of nuance, you might want to get it checked out.
task_queue··on Facial recognition technology is everywhere, and it may not be legal
Most theft is fueled by desperation.

Desperate people do desperate things for small, or often no gain.

People are injured or killed all the time over possessions they may or may not have on them.

task_queue··on Canada’s oilsands are paving the way for driverless trucks and threats of layoffs
Oilsands were sold to the public as an avenue to create high paying jobs and to rejuvenate the economy.

800 high salary earners ($200k/yr avg) could be put out of work as their profession is eroded and the public is shut out of what was supposed to be an opportunity to stay in/bootstrap themselves into the middle class.

task_queue··on Software Is Eating the Job Market
That's a false narrative. Owners and executives are the winners here. We are underpaid for the value we bring in and the industry has been caught trying to keep it that way.
task_queue··on EyeWitness app lets smartphones report war crimes
This is true. The "war crimes" angle makes it seem as if its for use against state-level actors waging war.

In that case, compromising electronic communications has been a key strategy in disrupting organization and identifying targets that pose a threat.

We've been very careful about not letting any details leak to the press about our campaigns in the Middle East.

If an app puts that control in jeopardy and I'm in an occupied country, I wouldn't want my Google account listing that I have it installed. Nor would I want to use it on a compromised network.

The little ToS they have you scroll through when you install it makes it apparent that it shouldn't be used on an untrusted network.

Good for them for making it unambiguous.

task_queue··on EyeWitness app lets smartphones report war crimes
So far its primary distribution network is the Play Store.

Most casual/uninformed users won't sideload an application if it's available through an app store.
