techrat··on Germany wants smartphone makers to offer 7 years of software updates
Show me one exploit in the wild that you would download from Google Play or be affected by using an updated Google Chrome from the Play Store.

Just because security updates stop doesn't mean your device is immediately insecure and cannot be safely used.

The majority of the phone's actual updates come through Google Play Services.

Meanwhile, I can show you an exploit in the wild that affects virtually all iOS devices even though they're regularly patched up: Jailbreak methods and iMessage zero clicks.

techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
BIOS updates are OS independent. It's the first screen you see when you turn on the device that tests the memory and finds the first bootable drive.

It's not a Linux Mechanic thing.

Ah yes. A coked up douchebro with a paid title who trashed the largest irc network in the world is surely an expert on why the internet is beginning to fail.
techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
Oh, why use specifics when you can just say "A lot" and "don't work at all"?
techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
My last 5 laptops, with the exception of my Chromebook Pixel LS, have been Windows laptops I wiped to install Linux on. The worst issue I had was one needed a BIOS update so that Wifi would work properly. Things working is less of a concern if you stick to the more common config types: eg, no gamer rainbow backlit keyboards and weird bells and whistles like that.
techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
I would have no problem supporting System76... if the foundation of their hardware wasn't whiteboxed crap to begin with.

The insane markup for subpar hardware is what leaves a bad taste in my mouth on top of that.

techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
Better Vendors: Any.

I currently have a Teclast laptop that I imported and wiped to put Linux on. Worked out of the box.

Previous system was a Chromebook Pixel LS. Ran like a champ.

It's not difficult to get a Debian derivative running on virtually any system by this point. And that's what PopOS is. A Ubuntu spin. You think they're putting work into the kernel for hardware support? Hah. Nope. They're not.

Linux Focused? Well, if you want Linux that badly, you'll find a way to make it happen. It's easier to install Ubuntu onto a system than it is to install Windows 10.

If it means I have to buy a Dell XPS13 and format Windows first, at least I know I'll be getting higher quality hardware at a lower price instead.

System76 is Clevo garbage. Garbage with Linux is still garbage.

techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
Managed to do this on a Teclast, HP Envy, Dell XPS, Chromebook Pixel LS and Lenovo (Thinkpad and Ideapad)

Not exactly sure why people think it's so remarkable to have things working correctly in Linux on the same hardware other OEMs use. CPUs these days are more SOCs than they ever have been and both Intel and AMD are pretty good at making sure support is in the kernel.

Installing Linux and getting things running like Steam has less steps than Windows 10. It's not a remarkable achievement anymore. You don't even need to touch the command line. Open Software Center, search for Steam, click the Install button. Done.

techrat··on Ask HN: What do you think of System76?
Subpar, overpriced hardware that is whiteboxed from another manufacturer. Too few options, barely considered design, fundamentally underwhelming overall.
techrat··on Amazon’s answer to delivery driver shortage: Pot smokers
Except all Amazon has done was taken a group marginalized by the prison system (war on drugs) and is taking advantage of their position (drug testing vulnerable or felon status due to drug arrests) and putting them in a situation where they are at the absolute mercy of Amazon if anything were to happen. (Get T-boned by someone who ran a red light? We'll drug test you and fire you for cause even if you were sober at the time.)

This is an extension of prison labor.

Trying to blacklist the word, hijacking any channel that mentioned 'libera' in the topic in any context led to you once having the largest IRC network by user count... to... what is it now? 1500 users, tops?

Now Libera is number 1 on Netsplit.de and you would rank at about 22... if they were feeling generous.

techrat··on FAA Releases Data Showing Trends in Dangerous Laser Strikes
Lasers still expand as the beam travels. The dot when you aim at your hand is smaller than the dot on the wall 10 feet away.

By the time you aim at something a thousand or two feet in the air, it's pretty close to filling the cockpit window. Plus it goes through helicopter door or front window plexi, which has a diffraction effect and will scatter the beam even more within the cockpit.

You absolutely can see where it hits, there's enough particulates in the air to show the beam itself.

techrat··on System76 Pangolin Linux-first laptop with AMD internals now in stock
It's all Clevo based anyway. System76 doesn't go much beyond what they source. It's a shame, if they actually made the effort to design a laptop that went beyond its foundation, I'd be more interested. But instead it's Clevo guts, Clevo problems.

Looking at the AMD laptop linked...

Lots of empty space that could have been slightly optimized for a larger battery. It just seems basically thought out... not like consideration is actually put into the design and layout.

techrat··on 8Gb USB Flash Drive Endurance Test (2017)
The article mentions lifetime/longevity/data retention, although not an 8GB drive that had been written to multiple times... I recently purchased a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer Titanium (nostalgia) thumbdrive off eBay, new in package.

Since drives at the time typically had preinstalled software like U3 or some app to encrypt your files, I wondered if a drive as old as this one would still be readable, never having had power since it was packaged up.

It was.

techrat··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
Yep. If Windows Update isn't destructive enough in how it decides it will reboot and install updates without the user's consent, Windows Update has also ended up bricking systems at times.

It's vile and a pain in the ass to deal with.

Linux/Ubuntu? "Oh, I should update. Okay, Alt+T, sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade"

Done.

It does it when I tell it to and only then.

techrat··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
i'll argue it's because any given linux install is less likely to shit all over itself and the filesystem compared to windows.
techrat··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
Gonna be one of those to disagree to some extent.

I flirted with Linux but never used it full time until about 2017 when the C710 Chromebook came out. What I really wanted was a basic laptop that was cheap enough to toss into a bag. So I nuked ChromeOS and started using ChrUbuntu.

Windows 10 had been out for about 2 years by that point and it became an increasing source of frustration, but I also knew I couldn't stay on Windows 7 forever.

What surprised me was that I came to prefer using my ChrUbuntu laptop despite having a much, much, MUCH more powerful desktop.

Windows 10 broke me. Why? How?

Inconsistency in the UI. Still finding old shit buried under several layers of new shit. It was still all shit in the end.

Ads in the Start Menu.

Haphazard driver support.

Forced updates and starts. Kind of a problem when you're trying to do a 17 hour overnight render job, y'know...

The problems I had in Windows just didn't seem to exist in Linux. The things people said "Oh, you have to go to the command line to fix everything" didn't seem to ring true at all. The memes, stereotypes, the disclaimers and talking points, all of it, were badly out of date. With Ubuntu, I could install from LiveUSB, entirely graphical, go through less steps during the installation process compared to Windows and still install software like Steam, vendor specific drivers and other stuff without ever touching the command line. AND Ubuntu doesn't piss me off by forcing me to restart when I don't want to.

After that, I continued to have BSOD's in Windows 10 with hardware that ran flawlessly under Ubuntu.

Networking, filesystem management was slower in Windows 10. I didn't have any issue getting Samba working in Linux to use with the NAS drives during video editing and transfer.

Google Drive was more than good enough when it came to office file compatibility. In the production house I worked out of, it came to be the preferred method. Gone was the Office shackles... and rightly so, after decades of email attachments being the viral vector for Windows systems, it's safer to just share a Drive link.

It was also because of the overhead of management that the house ended up switching from Outlook/Exchange to GoogleApps completely.

The more we did online, the less it mattered what type of system we were using.

The last, and still current, issue we still had? Adobe. After Apple's Final Cut fiasco, Adobe's failure to provide themselves as an alternative on Linux based setups was a major disappointment.

So, at this point... I have a separate airgapped Windows 7 box that runs my offline Adobe CS apps. They don't get updated and they don't need to be. (Why Win 7? Windows 10 BSODs on that box, too.)

Recently did an upgrade on my main system as well. Had a Ryzen 7 2700X setup that ran great for 3 years. Decided to make that my Windows 10 sidebox for apps that still don't quite work under Wine (though Proton is really helping to reduce that number of apps) and... yep. Have gotten hard freezes and BSODs for the first time when all I did was format the SSD to put Windows 10 on it.

Windows is decades of crap compressed into an OS. Despite having started with MSDos5.0 and Windows 3.0, using WinNT4 through to Win7 as my primary and only OS... I find Windows cumbersome, clunky, kludgy and badly implemented compared to where Ubuntu is today.

Year of the Linux desktop? Fuck off. People repeat that like it's some great joke, but the honest truth is... I use Linux now despite never having had a Linux background because it is less annoying to use than Windows.

techrat··on Google to pay Apple $15B to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
some =/= all,

which is the point I was addressing in my original comment.

techrat··on Google to pay Apple $15B to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
How does having a default web search engine equate to "[Company] is sending *all* search traffic to [other company]"?

Users have preferences and may change the engines they search with, not use Safari at all or be already using Google anyway.

techrat··on Happy birthday – 30 years of Linux
As impressive as it was at the time (and still is), a floppy is writable.

Booting from read only media and having a fully functioning OS was completely groundbreaking. Especially when you consider how much hardware was supported without configuration.

techrat··on The history of Google messaging apps
They should have just stuck with Hangouts. They had name recognition, the name itself was appropriate for the service and it worked with the existing services structure.

There was no reason to depreciate it and abandon it.

techrat··on Happy birthday – 30 years of Linux
Coming from someone who grew up during the floppy diskette booting and installing era of computing... what Knoppix managed to do by giving us the LiveCD just still seems like pure black magic fuckery to me. Install an OS from CD? Fine. USING an OS only booting from CD? HOLY SHIT.

I'm glad it became an option on the majority of distributions. IMHO it still remains the killer feature over Windows if you want to show someone what Linux can do.
