prime example of why there can't be discourse happening right here ^
theultdev··on Frog-derived gut bacterium eradicates tumors in mice
then it's a terrible system to govern humans under.

your system should work with human nature or it will never work.

capitalism exploits greed to generate prosperity. socialism falls under greed.

and no there's not a better solution, or at least it hasn't been found yet. if it was it'd still be a form of capitalism, not the other side of the spectrum.

but we disagree on the effects of the current system. capitalism has not been at the expense of society, the opposite in fact. we've had so much prosperity due to it.

same with the environment really. communist countries don't really have better air quality, worse in fact! US has the money from capitalism to develop clean tech.

theultdev··on Nano Banana 2 Lite
that's what I voted for and I'm happy about it. same for every single person in my circle.

you may not understand the other side because of biases but if you just say "oh 50% must be crazy / be stupid" then noone can have an honest debate. but I guess gone are those days.

theultdev··on Frog-derived gut bacterium eradicates tumors in mice
fancy way of saying "communism has never been done properly before."

yeah well that's because the execution matters and turns out when you give people power to choose who gets what, they abuse it. go figure.

theultdev··on Frog-derived gut bacterium eradicates tumors in mice
so if it's socialism/communism destroying the environment it's a mistake. but if it's capitalism it's by design?

nothing other than the prosperity that capitalism generates is inherently bad for the environment. yeah if you pull people out of poverty their carbon footprint will probably increase. but the alternative is them living in poverty and starving under a communist system (like always)

the amount of goods and services capitalism has generated has saved so many lives. we have huge amounts of excess food we send across the world.

theultdev··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Nothing wrong with that. All the information without choosing a side.

Even though we all know what happened. Only other notable thing was the end of most bellwether indicators.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
It doesn't need to.

Parents know who they are. THEY force their kids to use a child account with their parental account linked.

The same way every other parental control system works, whether it's Youtube, Netflix, iOS, Xbox, etc.

theultdev··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
On the flipside, this makes me MORE confident in Cursor.

But I already use Cursor w/ Starlink in the Cybertruck, so easy choice.

I also don't fall for propaganda so makes it easy to make practical, not emotional, decisions.

He's not evil, just a man with a vision, hopefully you realize that one day.

theultdev··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Was in reference to GP's "neo-Nazi" comment and similarly expressed HN users here.

But you may be seeing your bias if you think grokipedia is wrong.

Probably being used to leftist editors on wikipedia would do that.

Or maybe it's somewhere in the middle for some events. You can always validate sources and determine for yourself.

theultdev··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
That's your misguided opinion masquerading as fact.

In no way is he a nazi or any of the other ad-hominem attacks y'all throw here.

You'll probably point to one instance of an awkward gesture, like Elon isn't awkward. Clearly hearing him talk, he's not a nazi or racist.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
The system can't. That's the beauty of it.

It's up for the parents to enable it for their kids.

Just mandate that certain parental features are AVAIALABLE to parents.

It's up to the parents to parent their kids. Not the government. But if you want to mandate something, mandate tools for the parents.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
Of course, that is the other side of the coin.

Golden rule, put yourself in their shoes, all of that.

I hope you guys are raising your kids to be strong but caring individuals. You need both.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
if it was about kids they would have mandated parental controls.

not universal account verification.

people are stupid now though, so I guess they took their shot.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
Just teach your children to not care what's on social media.

It's a mental attitude. We used to be stronger. Teach that.

People will be assholes, social media or not. Toughen up.

And yeah we ban sold products, not like that does anything though.

Kids will still drink, do drugs, and smoke if they want to. It's not like they won't have siblings of friends that are 18+.

It still comes down to parenting to prevent them from going down that slope.

People being weak and thin skinned is the sore spot in America, not individualism, that's a strength.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
So it's not "obviously about kids" then.
theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
The only proper solution always used for children. Parent's discretion.

Other people's kids are not my nor the governments business.

I will restrict social media as I see fit for my children. Don't need a nanny state.

No need for "think of the children". You shouldn't be thinking of my children, they are fine. Worry about yourself and your own kids.

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
Until they turn 17, then they get to be id-verified surveilled like the rest of us!

Much safe system. Very cozy. Glad kids are safe now. That was close!

theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
Riddle me this. If you have to verify yourself to prove you are over 16, did that just deanonymize you? Yes.
theultdev··on UK set to announce social media ban for under-16s
Yeah where are the site banners? We had more for BLM than this.

Guess gone are the days of net neutrality and privacy protests by devs.

theultdev··on Redis 8.8: New array data structure, rate limiter, performance improvements
that's still a database.

it's not a relational database.

theultdev··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
So take everyone's pickup away and your child still gets hit by an illegal driving a u-haul, okay.

Just teach safety and enforce speeding/dwi/immigration laws.

Much better than taking a certain vehicle away from law abiding citizens.

I need my large truck just as much as I need my EV. I haul stuff constantly while also driving safely and following all laws.

theultdev··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
You don't know what people use their trucks for.

They have utility and getting rid of trucks in the name of safety is really stupid. How are you going to stock food, how are you going to transport goods?

There's safety, then there's regression. Might as well put everyone in a bubble suit.

theultdev··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
if any car hits a child it's probably going to kill them.

they aren't tall enough to roll over the top, even a smaller sedan.

being defensive around stupid people is a lesson, teach the child to always be aware when near a road.

theultdev··on Saying goodbye to asm.js
Made the requested benchmark:

https://theultdev.github.io/web-sha256-benchmark

https://github.com/TheUltDev/web-sha256-benchmark

It's Chrome wasm (windows) that is slow for me, 2x slower than asmjs.

FF with asmjs optimizations are 2x slower than wasm on FF.

Wasm in FF is 2x faster than wasm in Chrome for this hashing solution (for me).

theultdev··on Saying goodbye to asm.js
yeah turns out it was chrome that was slow, not firefox.

wasm hashing in chrome is half the speed of firefox for me.

https://theultdev.github.io/web-sha256-benchmark

theultdev··on Saying Goodbye to Asm.js
no incremental hashing, so you can't hash files too large for ram.

I do use it for smaller files though, it's much faster.

theultdev··on Saying goodbye to asm.js
Noted, will add that.

Last time I tried https://github.com/Daninet/hash-wasm

edit: I focus on browsers, that's wasm but not for browser envs.

----

https://theultdev.github.io/web-sha256-benchmark

https://github.com/TheUltDev/web-sha256-benchmark

seems it is chrome wasm that is slow.

asmjs is about the same speed in chrome and firefox (with asm optimizations still enabled) but wasm is slow as hell in chrome, asm still better.

side note: someone mentioned native crypto.subtle, but that doesn't have incremental hashing so can't use it for large files. however I do use it in practice for smaller files.

theultdev··on Saying Goodbye to Asm.js
yeah check back at the end of the day.

will try to rip it out of the project and put it in a standalone benchmark.

theultdev··on Saying Goodbye to Asm.js
It's a custom solution, but nothing special just incremental hashing for large files.

I took off the shelf wasm crypto libraries to compare it, but the leading one was 10x slower.

theultdev··on Why is almost everyone right-handed? A new study connects it to bipedalism
I don't think being left handed is purely genetic, if at all. Seems like a physical anomaly during gestation.

Twins are slightly more likely to be left handed, might be something to do with crowding in the womb where a specific hand is free more than the other.
