theultdev··on 'If anything happens, it's not suicide': Boeing whistleblower before death
I wonder why they wouldn't give a last name... Half the "news" articles nowadays are "sources familiar with the matter".

Now that Boeing is in the hot seat we want to identify journalist sources?

And I don't think there's a rule that we can only talk about things that have been fully investigated.

It's on ongoing current event and a development in it. It can be talked about if people want to talk about it and can do it civilly.

theultdev··on Boeing whistleblower before death: "If anything happens, it's not suicide"
While it did receive 360 comments, you cannot find it on any of the pages, going back 20+ pages.

While you can find many much much older articles that are far more dead just a couple pages back.

You wouldn't get the news at all about this tidbit of information if you didn't check HN in the right few minutes.

I for one get a lot of my news from HN, as it's a news aggregator and a lot of other mediums are more censored.

People are clearly interested in talking about it and have opinions about it and find it newsworthy given the TIMING and possible MOTIVE.

YOU even had an OPINION you inserted in, but you don't feel others should be able to see this or put their POV or COUNTERPOINTS in?

theultdev··on Boeing whistleblower before death: "If anything happens, it's not suicide"
That's an opinion you can have, but people deserve to find it, read it, and also read others and to offer counterpoints to your POV.
theultdev··on Boeing whistleblower before death: "If anything happens, it's not suicide"
I'm in the thinking certain entities have a farm of "users" with 500+ karma that can mass user-flag articles they don't want to be talked about.

But who would do something like that and have the resources to do that? (<-- that applies to TFA and the meta situation)

theultdev··on Boeing whistleblower before death: "If anything happens, it's not suicide"
Maybe this one will stick this time. I see people are flagging it heavily.

I vouched it, because it's a worthy discussion to have, and it should stay up so people can see it.

The other two were knocked off the top 20+ pages within a few minutes, you'd only notice it if you got lucky.

@dang, can we have an intervention here? Maybe merge the two other dupes together and allow the discussion to be had? People clearly want to talk about it.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
I never saw a [flagged] pop up but that's possible I suppose.

The other submission also wasn't flagged, even as of now, but it's gone on the pages.

There's much older and deader Boeing articles that are still on pages 3-10.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
It's strange neither are on the first 20 pages of HN.

Many older Boeing articles with less points and less comments are on the first 10 pages.

It dropped to page 8 within seconds, I haven't seen that before.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
I feel ya.

Side note, for my sanity, did this article disappear off the first page for you as well?

It's on page 6 for me now.

edit: it's completely gone now off any page.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
Probably a dupe because I can't find this submission or the one you linked on any page of HN now.

edit: just found this one on page 6 now.

edit2: both are completely gone now off any page.

edit3: now it's claimed as a [dupe] and the active discussion is dead.

Wow.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
You may not want to be the policing agency or agent that did look into it.

But yes, authorities should investigate and should go where the investigation takes them.

Boeing and friends are too big to actually look into, similar to the island being an event that was too big to actually look into.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
Conversely, there's also these relevant wikipedia articles:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motive_(law)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naivety

You can't just take things as face value when people can lie, deceive, plot, and other more horrific things.

Especially when there's motive and a wall of coincidences.

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
My brain completely skipped over that, woops.
theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
That wasn't a hypothetical. I was referencing a current event.

edit: missed the /s, stupid brain

theultdev··on Boeing Whistleblower: "If Anything Happens to Me, It's Not Suicide"
Well, the cameras could go off for an hour and both guards could be asleep for the same hour.

edit: on a meta note, why did this submission flash on the homepage, and now I can't find it?

edit2: I can't find the dupe submission either: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39712618

edit3: I found this submission now on page 6, it was just on the first page and gaining comments and votes fast until just now.

edit4: both submissions are completely gone now off any page.

@dang?

theultdev··on Death by Neti Pot
Seems Californians should repeal that useless and dangerous Prop (the exact reason you posted this [boy who cried wolf syndrome]),

instead of requiring distilled water on tap for Neti Pot users...

theultdev··on Death by Neti Pot
I mean, doesn't everyone know to use distilled water? Pretty sure they even say it on the box.

That being said, I can't imagine it to help, I'm usually so stopped up I don't see how I wouldn't just waterboard myself.

theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
Perfect, self destruct in case of extreme emergencies / prevent tech from being captured.
theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
Oh and a (shielded) micro nuclear reactor for power!

Now how to solve the heating problem...

theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
Porque no los dos?

You can jam the remote control for "surrogates".

You could do local AI to workaround that, but then ya'know... skynet...

Also distance may be a problem, especially if we're talking space warfare.

And surrogates would probably look more like the robot dogs or air/ship drones we currently have though, with some human-like ones sprinkled in.

Put a remote control operator in a spartan suit to pilot drones nearby!

theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
or more practically, titanium bullets.

the lead in them may be a problem though.

theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
> just place them so that most of it is between you and the bullet.

Easier said than done

theultdev··on Shields up: New ideas might make active shielding viable
Well this may work for future phasers, and ceramic/steel plates work well for bullets.

Emit the shield from the plate armor and you'll get protection from both.

Bonus points for chainmail or kevlar suits for knives / shots on non-vital areas.

Extra bonus points for gelatin to avoid broken ribs / stopping power from bullets.

Basically a spartan suit...

Sweet summer child. See Laurel Hubbard...

But yes, it's an incredibly petty thing to do, hard to imagine, similar to creating fake women speakers.

And no, hormone therapy does not "normalize" you with women.

Your bone structure and many other factors are at play.

Hormone therapy doesn't magically reverse these things.

You can literally look at the guy and see the difference between the women he's taking advantage of.

It's possible things have improved, I haven't used a non Apple laptop in some time.

Last time I checked on Windows, swiping will result in basically an alt-tab after the swipe.

It was not a fluid motion that could be cancelled.

theultdev··on Bring back private offices
I think you have a somewhat generalizing idea of small towns

In a town w/ a pop. of 6,500 I have:

- 1 gig internet (+ starlink, but I only use when traveling now)

- 2 dentist offices

- 4 local coffee shops + 1 starbucks

- 2 grocery stores + 1 walmart supercenter

- 3 gyms (but one is a curves so essentially 2) but none are crowded ever.

As far as international airports, I can either drive to the nearest city, about 45mins - 1hr but I have flown to a big airport from the town's airfield in a small aircraft.

You can find many small towns with many amenities and most of the times you have at least 2 options.

There's no denying there's more variety in the city, but often it's really not the drastic limitations you're imagining.

I will say, with what we do have there's no crowding, everything is very friendly, there's a lot of local options and people will go out of their way to help you.

But God forbid you live in the town 15 minutes from me, it barely has cell service.

You really can't lump small towns together, there's such a wide range.

theultdev··on Why it's so challenging to land upright on the moon
That's basically the SLIM's LEV-2. Not a lander itself, but a small rover.

https://www.space.com/jaxa-slim-moon-lander-lev-2-ball-robot

There's also the method of dropping a ball of airbags that deflate and detach, so you aren't limited to being a ball.

I assume it's more efficient and versatile (lots of tools on these things) to not be a ball.

You basically want a small truck loaded with equipment and a solar panel on top.

theultdev··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
Speaking for myself, weight and battery life are the two most important factors for a portable.

I mainly use a desktop if I'm at home or the office.

I only use a laptop occasionally in bed or heavily when traveling.

theultdev··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
Don't forget the touch pad / gesture recognition.

You can tell Windows laptops are general computers, the hardware fires off the gesture recognition and gives the command to the OS, so you swipe, it's recognized, then you get the action.

On Mac, the gesture is registered as it's happening, you can pull the screen, cancel, flick it, etc.

Not to mention the convenience of taking it to any Apple store and the battery life.

I game on Windows, host on Linux, and travel with Apple.

theultdev··on A woman named "Steve" – IT pioneer, entrepreneur, philanthropist (2019)
> I strongly suspect what these organisers couldn't find were women who would say the things they wanted.

Agreed. Plus you don't have to pay sockpuppets.

He was making them "cancel" their talk, but he had then met the "women quota" so all good.

Honestly it's the affirmative action culture that led to this.

People will take advantage of things like that.

Like a man that gets last in weight lifting amongst their male peers, "transitions", then blows out the #1 spot amongst women.

theultdev··on Bring back private offices
> That's not the case for greenhouse gases

It certainly is, especially for SLCPs.

That long debate aside, today we can see the palpable smog in big cities vs the clean air in rural areas, small towns, and small cities.

You also risk ozone depletion in areas with concentrated aerosol emissions, these are short lived and would disperse, but they cause the most damage of all pollutants in concentration.

> The earth could likely only support a fraction of the current human population if they all lived rural lifestyles.

I'm not suggesting that, I'm suggesting people live where they want to and don't fall for that inaccurate guilt-trip talking point.
