theultdev··on Nintendo is suing the creators of Switch emulator Yuzu
Bleem won in that case (but ran out of funds), so it's useful for the defendant.

If Nintendo loses, the next defendant would have even more precedence.

If Nintendo wins, it's easier to go after future emulator projects.

theultdev··on Nintendo is suing the creators of Switch emulator Yuzu
It matters for future precedence.

It can be used to win cases against other emulators and even shut them down with limited legal action.

theultdev··on Nintendo is suing the creators of Switch emulator Yuzu
This is a pretty big case to watch.

Are there any cases of emulators being sued successfully?

A user being able to provide keys and a rom from which they could own or be homebrew doesn't seem to violate copyright to me.

edit: seems the consensus is once via legal fund attrition, but the case went to the emulator authors in the end.

theultdev··on Why jalapeño peppers are less spicy (2023)
I don't think so, ghost peppers have a very rich flavor to me.

Habaneros have a sweet flavor that accompany their spice.

Serranos have a very distinct flavor as well.

Each pepper has a flavor that comes with the spice, and yeah the more spicy the pepper they more rich the flavor generally.

theultdev··on Show HN: R2R – Open-source framework for production-grade RAG
That was an enjoyable breakdown.

Sadly as you suggest, it can be noticed more than not in posts and articles written entirely by humans.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
I'm sorry, where did I say everyone would be capable of learning how?

It's something you can learn how to do, but just like many things you can learn, not everyone will.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
Agreed, I was mainly responding to the "trust me you don't want it"

I realize others have a differing degrees and handling of it.

Thus you can't say whether one individual "wants" it or not.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
Like I said to someone else, I never said it was simple.

It can be beneficial. Depends on how you handle your brain.

And yes I was mainly talking about harder stimulants, they do have side effects, like irritability.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
Trust me, I do.

Bad side is I get a pizza and bed day.

Good side is I have fun coding for 18 hours and get a week of work done.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
As I see it, if you can make it an advantage and make your environment nice, keep it.

If not, take the stimulants and see if that lasts long-term.

No need to assume either way for anyone.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
I never said it was simple. Just that it's a trait that can give great benefit.

Anecdotal of course, as is yours. But everyone handles their brain differently.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
You can learn how to hack your stubborn brain and take advantage of the waves of motivation.

Stimulates are a instant gratification solution, but man take those all the time and you will be pretty damn irritable and mentally tired after awhile.

It's natural for "ADHD" people to work in waves. Long sprints and rest in between. I know it's popular to advocate drugging yourself, but people reach for that too quickly.

Society is the problem, not them.

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
The inverse is true as well, not having ADHD can be a disadvantage, especially for developers.

(trying to stay focused on a long task or figure something out quickly skimming through things)

theultdev··on Attention deficits linked with proclivity to explore while foraging
It's an evolutionary advantage for humans today.

There's a reason ADHD articles are shared profusely here.

Information moves faster these days, you need ADHD to process it efficiently and hyper-focus on long tasks.

Those who can do that naturally become developers.

You just have to workaround social norms like work schedules.

Helps to own your own business or at least work remotely.

theultdev··on Life Aboard a Nuclear Submarine
Why, because the article didn't satisfy you right?

Totally agree.

theultdev··on Life Aboard a Nuclear Submarine
No I'd rather just read about god damn life on the god damn submarine as the title suggests.

A quick conversation with my brother about what it was like was more informative than this trash.

theultdev··on Life Aboard a Nuclear Submarine
How is the author's misguided speculation interesting?

If that was supposed to be the interesting part the title wouldn't be:

> Life Aboard a Nuclear Submarine

Just report what you saw, not what you feel.

Reporters used to know to not be the subject.

They were invited on and that wasn't good enough.

They had to make up some plot in their head why they were invited on to confirm their bias and influence others.

theultdev··on Show HN: Functional UI Kit – twin Figma and React component libraries
I'm working on https://figma-to-react-native.com and a companion UI Kit that targets React Native (including Web)

I will have a service soon where you can publish your Figma design as a package to consume in your React Native app.

You can find more functionality and updates here: https://x.com/theultdev

theultdev··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
That's not what this is about.

It's not just any open-source project.

It's a privacy-orientated open-source project.

They could at least BSL the server code and allow others to verify the server code and host but not compete.

theultdev··on Sora: Creating video from text
I use to pay designers for artwork, now I just use AI.

There's no physical task that robots have replaced humans for me.

Hell, even the roomba sucks (pun intended) and my wife has to pick up the slack.

theultdev··on Sora: Creating video from text
I mean today, in the real world.

It is currently more expensive to build a robot for many tasks than it is to have a human do it.

> Perfecting general robotics as an improvement on humans will be quick.

It has not been nor is there any indication it will be.

theultdev··on Sora: Creating video from text
It's just cheaper to put humans on tedious physical tasks. See Amazon.

AI is cheaper than a high paid designer, developer, writer, etc.

A robot is more expensive than a human laborer.

It's really funny to see the squirm from those thinking truckers would be automated away, not them.

theultdev··on A Libertarian Gets Mugged
Are you trolling, what's with the attitude?

In a serious response, no I only support punishment when convicted by a jury of their peers in a fair and speedy trial.

theultdev··on A Libertarian Gets Mugged
I believe in the importance of protecting individual rights and limiting the use of force, including violence.

Only when those that infringe on others' rights do I then support force and violence.

theultdev··on A Libertarian Gets Mugged
Sometimes the moral thing to do is punish those who inflict their immorality on others.

I have no sympathy for those who aggress innocent others with deadly force.

and I will leave my judgement up to God, not you.

theultdev··on Apple has not fixed the macOS audio left/right balance bug for nearly 10 years
Never had this issue, but I do put the left audio to 90% since my wife's handmedown left ear airpod is dying.

It evens it out fine. Will replace at 99%.

theultdev··on How San Francisco staged a comeback
> Public safety also isn’t really an issue for anyone that doesn’t identify as an unattended backpack in the backseat of a locked car with out of state plates

Don't travel to San Francisco, your car will be vandalized and robbed, got it.

I mean, why is that the standard? Nowhere I go do I ever have to worry about something like that.
