> CLAIM YOUR TERRITORY NOW, THEY ARE GOING FAST!
Wow.
What if the arrival of the police or the sound of sirens dispelled the gunfire early enough to save those bystanders?
What if that body they find isn't quite dead, but bleeding out and they are able to save them?
I don't know what the real numbers are, but from that article it seems noone does...
A proper reporting of numbers would be nice.
So much so that it's "obstructing a meaningful analysis of the effectiveness of the technology". Their words, not mine.
> If this result is attributable in part to missing or nonmatched records of investigatory stops that did take place as a direct consequence of a ShotSpotter alert, CPD’s record-keeping practices are obstructing a meaningful analysis of the effectiveness of the technology.
Should have been the end of the article right there, but techdirt decided to write one anyway.
And false positives really aren't that big a deal anyway. You get false police reports, at least with the sensors you can recalibrate and adjust.
The alternative is an extensive investigation which is difficult to determine the location, if not impossible.
I don't mind these shot spotters being installed vs CCTVs as the microphones are really just tuned for gunshots and can only serve one purpose (in the current form)
Pointing to extreme events with outdated designs has nothing to do with this.
SWE is a bubble and can't really be applied to the rest of the workforce. A SWE would scoff at any other job because of this.
We do have builders, there is overregulation that stops us from building.
It's not the lack of workers.
The NRC effectively makes nuclear impossible in the US.
Nothing in this thread points to lack of workers, but to over regulation.
On a personal note, I'd prefer many less lawyers, especially the ones who argue against the one energy source that works.
I'd prefer many more trade workers, much less in academics.
I'd prefer people to not view jobs as a social status and appreciate the contributions people give to society.
A plumber can make quite a bit of money, work up to their own business, not have to deal with huge amounts of debt, and actually provides needed services for society.
But their point remains the same, "let someone else do it" (the quiet part: "it's below us").
It's a very negative and elitist attitude that's prevalent in bubbles where people don't have to work normal jobs.
That's fine.. I guess, but the world needs construction workers, including in America.
If my son wanted to build nuclear reactors I'd be A-Okay with that.
Luckily the jury had sense that the tweet was harmless in the end.
The judge ignored his stake in SpaceX he could have leveraged and mainly the Saudi Arabia firm that he was in talks with in taking Tesla private would not testify and then said the exact opposite:
https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/25/23040961/elon-musk-saudi-...
https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2023/1/23/musk-on-trial-sa...
So in the end it's do you believe Elon or the Saudis?
The judge sided with the Saudis.
No jury I've been on has functioned that way. Have you acted that way?
If you don't support a system of a jury of your peers determining your guilt, what do you support?
We're all waiting on the edge of our seats to know what your ideal judicial system is.
Btw you've never had jury duty? Did you vote in a mob form? I sure hope not. I haven't.
Under that logic, maybe Musk is just another African American being persecuted by the US government.
Do you agree with that logic or do you trust the courts over your peers?
(ie. what "metric" would you use "for what constitutes truth"?)
https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/03/cars/musk-tesla-tweet-lawsuit...
The end result is left out every time the "court finds" articles are linked. The jury found the opposite, which is what actually matters.
He's not saying "look over at that other CEO".
Even still, it's not whataboutism to put things in perspective as you may see that you're blowing one thing out of proportion due to bias if those same values are being violated by another entity but you are okay with it because of the entity itself.
It's always a good exercise to check for contradictions in your values.
Let's also say I think communism is a mind-virus (I do).
I can still build airplanes knowing that communist leaders use them to spread their mind-virus.
That's because in my view, the benefit of connecting non-ideological people far outweighs the negatives of what the communist leaders spout off.
(ie, you're not only spreading that mind virus, but all thoughts, including the ones that CHALLENGE the mind virus. The biggest threat to an ideology is DISSENT)
There were quite a few tribes given Starlink to fix their school computers so their children could get a proper education.
You shoved in a lot of other nonsense in there too, but I'd thought I'd call out the most ridiculous first.
> Starlink was intentionally curtailed during the Ukraine war in order to provide tactical advantage to Russian forces
Starlink was given to Ukraine for humanitarian reasons. Ukraine wanted to use it for drone strikes and wanted the area expanded. Musk did not want Starlink used offensively.
You seem to support the US government being able to tell private citizens what they have to do or who they have to kill with the technology they create?
Ukraine is not even a NATO ally and we are not in war with Russia.
Open Secrets' data is just processed FEC data, you don't have to "believe" Open Secrets, you can verify the numbers yourself:
https://www.fec.gov/introduction-campaign-finance/data-tutor...
My point was we don't have the data you are referencing to verify it the same way.
Or do you??? (a CNBC article w/ no reference does not count)
We will find out at the end of the trial what is ruled as valid evidence or not.
(your source does not link "The documents" they reference so noone can verify)
Though I do think Ryan Salame mainly donated to non-partisan crypto PACs, but quite a bit did go to Rs, including $400k to his girlfriend.
But yeah, the plea deals are ridiculously lax, but SBF will just get pardoned by a outgoing D president like they did Susan Rosenberg, so he's good too.

It is not their job to say what is true or false. That's propaganda. They also do not have the right to enforce what you train your AI to say.
Would love to see the SC challenge this EO. It violates the 1A.
The EO says you must inform the gov when you start the training the AI if it's a risk to public health, etc.
How would one determine if it's a risk? Who determines the risk (I assume the government).
So effectively that means the gov determines what is right/wrong, true/false. Not good.
It's most likely the main reason there's no direct world wars between super powers.
But you will have to go to a shady place since they only decriminalized them...
If it seems stupid it's because it is.
