theultdev··on CVS ditches common cold meds after FDA advisers say they're useless
Behind the counter (BTC) is the specific term for these OTC medicines.
theultdev··on BioNTech presents positive phase 1/2 data for CAR-T cell therapy candidate
My anecdotes of people's reasons disagree with yours so I don't think they are very useful.

A political breakdown doesn't give you the insight of those people's individual reasoning.

theultdev··on BioNTech presents positive phase 1/2 data for CAR-T cell therapy candidate
Is that "significant amount of people" based on something or just your own prejudices?

Personally most people I know who don't want the covid vax reached that conclusion after weighing the risk/benefit.

I'm also from an area where "Pray" would be a significant part of their life, but has nothing to do with their decision.

theultdev··on Microsoft introduces AI meddling to your files with Copilot in OneDrive
That's why they qualified it.
theultdev··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
No we punish the companies now, not the thieves, see Kia and Hyundai.
theultdev··on CISA, NSA, FBI Release Advisory Warning of BlackTech, PRC-Linked Cyber Activity
One if by land, two if by sea.

Either way, let's wait for the video, I don't believe Paul that the Brits are here.

theultdev··on Has a San Antonio inventor solved a problem of small-scale wind power?
Who do you think allows all those windmills in their pastures?

Never heard anyone complaining other than once about a company trying to not pay out for energy produced.

theultdev··on Has a San Antonio inventor solved a problem of small-scale wind power?
Texas has the most installed wind power capacity of any US state.

Many days the grid runs 100% off of wind energy.

theultdev··on RealFill: Image completion using diffusion models
> but when you take a picture that capture personal moment and some software without your consent alters it with some generative stuff, what would that lead to?

I mean, do you not look at the photo after you take it? Even if you don't, you were there and saw the original scene. If your memory fails you, it's on you. If you didn't take an accurate picture, it's on you. Check next time.

If anything meaningful is added, it'll be very noticeable, if it's not meaningful, then what does it matter?

Cameras already do a lot of corrections that don't represent reality.

Hell, our perceptions of colors is different than everyone else's.

theultdev··on RealFill: Image completion using diffusion models
Nobody shows their true reality in public pictures anyway, it's all staged in some way.

For private pictures, it didn't change your reality, you can lie to yourself, but you've always been able to do that.

theultdev··on Musk Wanted to Spy on Drivers to Defend Tesla from Lawsuits
This event is literally about how he listened to his people.

> The whole X debacle has proven

I don't understand. What was the "debacle" and how did it "prove" your claim?

theultdev··on Musk Wanted to Spy on Drivers to Defend Tesla from Lawsuits
> what ended up being implemented

He's the CEO, what's implemented is what he wants to do.

He did what he wanted, which was pitch, listen to feedback, and implement. Like a good CEO.

theultdev··on Japan launches rocket carrying lunar lander and X-ray telescope
Only until recently the Russians were our only ride to the ISS. The US didn't even have a shuttle program...

The US itself still doesn't have a working program, thankfully SpaceX can do it.

The Russians could probably go to the moon again, but there's no real point to.

theultdev··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
Well that's still a conspiratorial explanation, just a different conspiracy.

Though we do know these agencies have broken laws and done some pretty nasty stuff like MKUltra over the years.

So they really have no stock and should have been broken up a long time ago. No conspiracy theories needed really.

theultdev··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
The secret service is under the DHS, not the CIA or FBI, which have been the organizations criticized by RFK, and JFK for that matter.

The DHS didn't even exist back then, the SS was absorbed into it some time after it was created in 2002.

Regardless, one can want the usual protections given and needed and also hold the belief that some agencies are too powerful and corrupt and need to be broken up. (like breaking up the DHS and making the SS it's own entity)

theultdev··on Cerabyte: ceramic storage poised to usher in 'yottabyte era'
Ceramic film is used in window tinting and seems durable enough. It can stand the rollers and the elements.

I assume the film for storage will be in a protective housing, but even exposed I don't see a problem.

theultdev··on Cerabyte: ceramic storage poised to usher in 'yottabyte era'
> The first Cerabyte solution, CeraMemory, will come as a cartridge that contains sheets with ceramic coatings. If you looked closely at the data stored, it would look like "quasi-punched cards in nano-scale."
theultdev··on Bees struggle to find flowers because of air pollution
I'm seeing an extra amount of wasps this year, must be a good season for them.

I've killed about 10 nests so far this year. The newest batch of them spread out on the back patio window. They're building a nest, but most of them chill on the window and wall very distributed like.

I've nearly given up and just walk past them now, never gotten stung, they just move out of the way.

Funny enough, yellow jackets like the front of the house, red wasps like the back. Yellow jackets are much meaner in my experience. Lots more of them per nest too.

theultdev··on 25 Gbit/s at home, part 1
The government doesn't pay for anything.

It's whether you want to pay through it via tax dollars or directly.

theultdev··on Effects of natural and artificial light on man and other living things (1973)
You don't have black soot everywhere?

For outside you put Citronella torches around your area, so the smoke makes a perimeter. Take account of wind direction and speed.

Then a candle in the middle for the interior. The candle won't do as much as torches since it doesn't produce enough smoke.

They don't stop mosquitoes but they lessen the effect. Instead of 30 bites an hour you may get 1 or 2.

theultdev··on Cryptome is closing until Julian Assange is freed

theultdev··on New York City bans TikTok for government employees
there's no government employee that needs information from TikTok to do their job
theultdev··on Jira can’t stop people from using it incorrectly
No, me and my manager switched off Jira a long time ago because we hated it
theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
How does free speech infringe on other's rights?

If you include spam, well that's not speech, usually not even by humans. Spam is a form of censorship by [D]DoS.

If you include threats, well that's an action, not speech, and it's illegal, because of the action.

theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
That's a decent point, but I'm not sure if it's outweighed by the ability for users to discuss and validate the disallowed sources.
theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
I wish people would stop trying to destroy a conversation that others clearly want to have.

I don't see any arguing going on here, just a healthy debate about free speech balancing while still deploying spam blocking techniques.

This is a political and a technical issue. It's a fascinating problem with no perfect solution (yet?)

theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
> Because it invites people to game the system.

Please elaborate, how would they game the list?

They can already see if a submission is throttled/flagged/etc.

theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
they can do that without the list. as soon as you see your post doesn't get traction, make a new domain, or have multiple in the first place.
theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
pretty easy to see when they don't get traction / get flagged automatically.

the only thing it really does is prevent others from seeing what's being censored.

theultdev··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
Why is the list kept secret / not published? (it's the same thing)

For one, I wonder if there are certain news sites that are legit but ideals don't align.

Or are they ALL spam sites? Who knows, we can't inspect it.

Fight bad speech with more speech. Spam is the exception, but are they all just spam sites?
