theultdev··on US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level in More Than a Year
I was giving a specific example for one industry.

Noting the political party was just a detail.

But yeah plenty of examples of R presidents for other sectors in the past I'm sure too.

From someone who is close to the energy sector that's simply not true.

There's been so many EOs from Democrat presidents that cause hugely negative disruptions in the industry.

Yes they do. Not sure why you're being downvoted.
theultdev··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
I wasn't implying there weren't workarounds.

Just that Easylist is indirectly funded by ad revenue (google)

When it comes to ads, it's about the bulk of people, most don't run anything other than the default lists.

theultdev··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
It was an interesting experience.

I'm still not entirely sure it's for the best or not.

On one hand, it is a concentration of power into hands a few people.

On the other, it is for a good cause, to maintain a list of ad network and site banners that drain resources, cause privacy issues, etc.

The Easylist people aren't saints. They get paid off by Google to allow "Acceptable Ads". So you just show a different campaigns if your user is running adblocker nowadays.

Used to work in this realm. It doesn't matter.

Easylist will contact you, strongarm you into disabling your countermeasures and threaten to block all JS on your page if you don't comply.

So no ad servers can load, no prebid, nothing will function/load if the user has an adblocker that uses easylist (all of them) installed.

theultdev··on “Super secure” messaging app leaks everyone's phone number
Per your link, this isn't for every account. Just for pages that reach a large number of people. Good step though.

There really is no privacy concern to list the country of a user. I don't know why FB has to qualify it just for large pages only.

theultdev··on “Super secure” messaging app leaks everyone's phone number
Yeah should have been done by Dorsey a long time ago.

Afaik X is the only social media service that does this so far.

Such a simple feature that has a major quality of life improvement.

Possibly when it comes to the "paying" part.

But my response was directed towards "indians cosplaying as patriotic americans".

I'm on the fence when it comes to paying people for posts, but that wasn't really the heart of the statement.

Freedom Chat just looks (and sounds) like a grift tbh.

The website doesn't really spark any confidence.

Never heard of it and I'd be surprised if they have more than 100 users.

theultdev··on “Super secure” messaging app leaks everyone's phone number
That doesn't make any sense. Why release a feature to show account locations then?
theultdev··on Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class
Break that down further and you'll see it's blue cities in those red states that have the highest illiteracy rates. Same with crime. Kind of goes hand in hand. Education in blue cities needs to be fixed.
theultdev··on He set out to walk around the world. After 27 years, his quest is nearly over
You crossed legally. You didn't swim or walk through the desert. They have xray scanners, dogs, and many other methods to inspect vehicles. You may not have even noticed you were inspected.

Nothing racial about it, many races from many nations crossed illegally. It's about legality, not race.

theultdev··on He set out to walk around the world. After 27 years, his quest is nearly over
He said "it's okay" not that it's not illegal.

Of course it's illegal. But it used to be open season on the US border was the point. There were so many crossings, this dude would have gone unnoticed. Carrying or not. Nowadays not so much.

theultdev··on Rats Play DOOM
You built all this and saw a mouse rolling on a ball playing Doom, but didn't record it?
theultdev··on Rats Play DOOM
You missed the point. The chips are exchanged for money shortly after. The brain knows this.

Similar to the rat knowing the sugar comes very shortly after the task.

theultdev··on CRISPR fungus: Protein-packed, sustainable, and tastes like meat
Most comments here are pretty positive, other than noting it's not like meat. But nothing really about health aspects.

I'm fine with GMOs, a lot of produce would be pretty inedible without it.

It's a lot more natural then what we're doing here.

theultdev··on CRISPR fungus: Protein-packed, sustainable, and tastes like meat
We've gone from GMOs are bad to lab meat being okay.
theultdev··on Zig quits GitHub, says Microsoft's AI obsession has ruined the service
It's a little more than a niche language now.

Bun is made with Zig, and they just got acquired by Anthropic.

Ghostty is another notable piece of software made with Zig.

I assume the Bun acquisition is fueling most of this Zig news. There's about 4 articles on the frontpage about Zig.

theultdev··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
I can see both sides of the dilemma and I don't necessarily like when a maintainer defaults to "open a PR" but asking for a reproducible issue wherever requested is not too much to ask.

With a PR I understand not wanting to put the effort in as it may not be merged. But offering up a reproducible example on the correct forum is the least you could do. If you want the problem fixed that's the best way forward.

theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
I didn't focus on just food, I was simply replying to GP about meat.

You don't see GE appliances over there either.

Yet LG, Samsung appliances are plentiful in the states.

theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
There are plenty of food, household, and tool products we make.

Pretty much everything I buy, apart from computer tech, is from an American company.

theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
Lived there for 6 years. You're not buying American steak, most likely it's Australian.

There are certain clothing brands (at a much higher cost), large fast food chains, and Apple are the exceptions. Basically really large companies that make specific deals.

theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
That's a strawman. Obviously if there's no American competition then I see no problem with lower tariffs for those products.

I don't mind at all reducing tariffs for things we dont manufacture or can't for various reasons.

I believe the administration is lowering tariffs for things like that.

Beef on the other hand should be temporarily lowered since our cattle herd is half of what it should be. (It plummeted under Biden takes awhile to return as the herd matures) Soooo import from Argentina until it's back up.

theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
It is. Japanese don't have the opportunity to buy most American products. You won't see them stocked or available apart from import stores where prices can be 2-3x the price they are in America due to import fees. Many items aren't even available there due to strict restrictions. Meanwhile America has been an open market for a long time.
theultdev··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
People can pay a 10-20% premium for African and Dutch gifts if they want to.

Or shop American and help keep manufacturing and jobs alive here.

I think it's a fair compromise. As Americans we are used to having an overwhelming amount of choice, partly due to our previous open trade policies. Something you don't really see in other countries. Go to Japan and you can count the American products sold on your hand.
