theultdev··on What's stopping America from going all-in on heat pumps?
I see. For others with existing systems, you'd have to save $333/mo to break even over 3 years assuming a $12k install.

My combined gas and electric bills don't even reach $200/mo during peak months.

I'd expect that is why most people don't switch.

New installs, sure I think it makes sense.

theultdev··on What's stopping America from going all-in on heat pumps?
How much did the entire heat pump installation cost?

I assume in Canada you needed a geo-thermal loop.

That runs about $30k avg, you'll break even in 10 years.

Investing that money would prove financially better.

Even a 2% low-risk investment would net $6,421 in 10 years.

Also it seems they have a lifespan of 15-20 years so you have to account for depreciation of the system.

It doesn't make much sense to switch, new installations or replacing failing systems are the only scenarios I see where it does.

theultdev··on What's stopping America from going all-in on heat pumps?
> And both of them will pay for themselves over a few years

how much did you save on your bills a month?

theultdev··on What's stopping America from going all-in on heat pumps?
same reason people don't have A/Cs in some places.

although you'll get heatwaves sometimes, it's not worth it overall.

similarly, although these may be more efficient than what you already have, it costs money upfront to install new stuff. money people don't have.

This was beautifully constructed, and I wish you got a reply.

I appreciate the effort.

theultdev··on I hacked a dating app (and how not to treat a security researcher)
OP didn't qualify the statement "This is exactly why I think software engineering should require a licensing requirement".

No mention of PII or any specifics.

SWE already has regulations. I see no need for a license requirement...

Concerning PII, it's kind of hypocritical for the gov to regulate when the NSA was proven to be collecting data on everyone against their will or knowledge.

You don't see how gate-keeping who can create software is authoritarian?

The distinction between creating virtual software and physical structures is fairly obvious.

Of course physical engineers that create buildings and roads need to be regulated for safety.

And there are restrictions already for certain software industries, such as healthcare.

Many other forms of software do not have the same hazards so no license should be needed, as it would be prone for abuse.

theultdev··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
They presented a strawman. I'm unravelling it.

I want to know where their values are and if they contradict.

I'm re-presenting the original scenario being discussed and the scenario they introduced.

Comparing the two while also redirecting back to the original moral dilemma.

theultdev··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
Someone doxxing you and pressuring your employee to fire you because you said something they don't agree with politically is the same as you insulting your coworkers in your eyes?

You don't see any discrepancy between those two scenarios?

And you don't see anything wrong with the former scenario?

they agreed it was an error, to send him to that particular prison, not out of the country in general.

he is an illegal and his deportation defense in 2019 was he feared for his life from a "rival gang" indicating he was in the MS-13 gang that the feds and judge found him to be part of.

he's not just some "father", as the left leaning news likes to portray. he participated in human trafficking and himself admitted he was a gang member.

it seemed that the left did not care about vetting when gang members were coming into the country.

...but now they're being deported, it seems vetting is crucial (which is being done, but you're not always privy to (or aware of) the information)

and "anonymous snitch" is quite derogatory. you do know how evil MS-13 is right? listen to yourself.

they chop people up without blinking an eye. the fact someone risked their life to "snitch" saved so many people. this isn't playground shit.

Sounds good to me :)

You're missing out, our chicken is amazing.

But 10% on your imports is a good trade, I agree.

theultdev··on 2025 Recession Indicators Hit Fashion and Wall Street at Once
There's no point in Africa taxing imports from us under that logic?

They lower it, we lower it.

You want me to detail all countries' tariff policies?

Are you insinuating that these countries have no tariffs in place, or...?

I believe it's quite clear the imbalance of many markets. Automobiles being the most distinct, but every product tariffed varies by country.

edit: rate-limited, I'm not allowed to talk anymore I guess...

I've experienced terrible teachers (especially math teachers) and had to teach myself.

I've seen good schools crumble due to terrible policies and teachers.

You're enabling the problem by apologizing for these poor performing teachers.

Literally all of 8th grade was learning how to count to 10 in other languages and some stupid cross-stitching art. In Math!!!

Luckily I learned through programming on my own time, but once you're behind from one shitty math teacher, it's hard to catch up.

theultdev··on Preschoolers can reason better than we think, study suggests
Of course they would say that.

Blaming the parents and kids is just a scapegoat.

But yes, the kids that succeed are the ones that the parents are involved, because the teachers are useless.

The quality of teachers has gone way down, especially since federal student loans.

Anyone can become a teacher, it's a default path, and it shows.

I don't think you need to trust what "conservatives claim" when you see the test scores and literacy rates.

American public schooling is and has been broken for awhile.

theultdev··on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia
They already are damaging ships via proxy support of Houthis.

Deterrence sometimes means applying force.

Iran won't be able to do anything if the US actually applies force to them.

And I highly doubt anyone will actually come to their defense, which is an ingredient for WW3.

theultdev··on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia
Obviously the person who started the peace talks was talking about Ukraine leading to WW3.

I was talking about everyone that said the gist of "if we allow peace talks, Russia wins", mainly here.

It's the sentiment that led to the war persisting for these last few years.

No talks from the Biden admin, no public outrage, just support. And constant funding to continue it.

theultdev··on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia
There's a huge middle ground between WW3 and allowing Iran to fund and coordinate terrorism.

A strike on them to correct their malicious behavior is far away from a global war.

I didn't see much concern about Ukraine leading to WW3 until Trump allowed peace talks to start.

During the Biden administration peace was not discussed and not even considered an option by many.

theultdev··on B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Begin Unannounced Deployment to Diego Garcia
B-2s come in after threatening air defense is destroyed.

In this case, they can just roll right in.

Whether they are stealth or not, they are B-2 bombers, their purpose is to bomb.

Whatever can drop the payload. The more the merrier.

All that and the fact that we know that B2 stealth bombers have already been used against Yemen, even during the Biden admin.

Article author doesn't seem to be well-informed of this making that statement.

When it comes to striking fear in the enemy, overkill is practical.

theultdev··on Trump Spoiled the F-35, America's Most Popular Fighter Jet
> Nothing had changed about the plane’s performance. It’s just that, in the eyes of some international customers, the F-35 can’t fully be trusted anymore because of who is the commander-in-chief. Donald Trump has an affinity for authoritarianism, has exhibited poor treatment of NATO (whose Article 5 obligates collective defense), and, in particular, has threatened to annex Greenland and Canada.

Ignoring the biased language (affinity for authoritarianism.. lol), those reasons are not supported by their sources.

The qualms have been from the trade wars in particular, so leaders are using purchases of the F35 as a negotiating tactic.

Then the article attempts to intertwine software updates as reasoning, which is true, but has nothing to with Trump, as nothing has changed regarding that since previous admins.

I am glad to see people concerned about US military sales overseas though. Very important we keep that up /s
