throwbigdata··on AWS us-east-2 outage
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/sap/latest/general/arch-guide-ar...

Each Availability Zone can be multiple data centers. At full scale, it can contain hundreds of thousands of servers. They are fully isolated partitions of the AWS global infrastructure. With its own powerful infrastructure, an Availability Zone is physically separated from any other zones. There is a distance of several kilometers, although all are within 100 km (60 miles of each other).

Wait. Are you saying that while AWS maintains multiple AZs they can’t maintain reliability on the failover systems between them?

That’s a feature, not a bug. If we all had the same number one ; then things would not be loaded anything close to evenly. There is some command to find out what the unique ID number is for your particular zones with your naming.

It’s premature when it’s premature. It’s late when it’s not.

Lots and lots of money.

I’m sorry about your feelings but you are wrong.

its more expensive to have more things and it’s more expensive to have more complicated things that are also complex. And things that can fall over are inherently more complicated.

throwbigdata··on Ask HN: New job at BigCo. Everything has friction
All these people telling you to coast are right for 80% of the population.

If you have great ability, do t squander it. Get another job where you can be more effective. Find your passion and your fortune will likely follow.

I eschewed advice like the others give, and I didn’t have to work after 35. Yes I got lucky but I also worked hard and failed and got back up and found a place to succeed.

throwbigdata··on Tell HN: There needs to be a “right to speak with a human”
Respectfully, you’re begging the question that it would be frivolous. If the contract says they must have a human respond within so much time and the company fails to do that, the lawsuit would not be frivolous to a rational person.
throwbigdata··on Tell HN: There needs to be a “right to speak with a human”
Your desire to speak with a human is nothing that should be right. You should always be able to send certified mail for these conversations. If you’re not happy with the service you are getting you should be able to take your business elsewhere. You can and should be able to write this into a contract if they want agree to it take your business elsewhere.

It is immoral to suggest that the company is obligated to have a human on standby to talk to you whenever you define a desirable need.

According to Law 45 of the 48 Laws of Power, an effective approach is to employ a comforting deception: preach change, and even make changes behind the scenes, but maintain the comforting appearance of familiar institutions and traditions.
throwbigdata··on Ask HN: I got into MIT. Should I go?
My son was just declined for MIT so good for you.

Advice I got from another person that went to MIT was to make sure you know what you want to do. He said that a lot of the faculty are world-class (not as big as Cal tech of course :-).

This person told me that if you’re simply going for a general education there are much better places to get that. But if you know what you want to do and you can carpe diem the opportunity to work with world-class experts, you can make things very good.

Don’t worry about your ability to succeed, you will. You’ll also fail a lot. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall down it matters how many times you get back up.
