tossAfterUsing··on Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency
look, you clearly haven't a clue what you're talking about. you may very well disagree with me, and that's your prerogative.

cash has been variously shells, giant stones, glass beads, shiny metal, complicated paper, etc...

fundamental to the hand-to-hand nature of this Kong nonsense, is the feasibility to be transferred offline.

whatever Kong is, it's primary function will be a way to rip people off.

and taywrobel: as a side note, i realize my statement may appear unbelievably ironic to you. just know that's your problem and not mine.

Kong seems worthless to me. ETH has demonstrated it's not a reliable store of value, if the DAO hack can just be reversed.

Instead of garbage paper tokens, here's a thing that already exists:

... can be used just like cash

... isn't limited to a particular denomination

... value can be added at any time

... fits in your butt

tossAfterUsing··on Verizon/Yahoo Blocking Attempts to Archive Yahoo Groups – Deletion: Dec. 14
i can't possibly be the only person here who has been expecting this type of fuckery for 10+ years, right?

it's taken me that long to get to a place where i feel confident that my own personal archive of data isn't going to disappear from control.

side note: it's too bad that ssbc isn't quite ready to deploy at scale for the types of folks who rely on Yahoo Groups for this service. sure seems like a great resource.

tossAfterUsing··on A Guide to Distributed Teams
Thanks for this link. The team i'm with is considering creating a role like mine for several developers in remote-from-home-office locations, and this will absolutely be a tool to consider for that group.

Even the elites want out... i'm not sure the system wouldn't eat itself before then.

tossAfterUsing··on An update on YC China
lol... nice find.

brainwashing (n.) "attempt to alter or control the thoughts and beliefs of another person against his will by psychological techniques," 1950, a literal translation of Chinese xi nao. A term from the Korean War.

agreed, unreservedly.

still, namecalling these users doesn't solve anything. and i'm sure it's against the community principles.

tossAfterUsing··on An update on YC China

150% debt : gdp... gonna hinder the growth in medium term

tossAfterUsing··on An update on YC China
user may be Chinese national, but name calling ("brainwashed") probably isn't the best way to encourage the sorts of open dialogue that will be necessary to change their views

Step 2: globally orchestrated sanctions on a fascist dictatorship

Step 2b: hopefully we avoid WWIII

how is it reasonable to take your anecdote as a decent reference point for somebody who has grown up in china, speaking mandarin, and learning about the world through CCP-funded public schooling?

annecdotally, my attention isn't usually held for long by people who are unwilling to engage with a service because of it's weird name...

Seriously having difficulty detecting whether this is sarcasm, so forgive me if I am taking some bait...

I'm not sure that I want the government to be responsible for doling out penalties for working (e.g. taxing somebody's productive efforts). I think it would be better if localities had sales taxes only. Penalizing people for visiting/living in a location (by taxing them proportionally for the rest of their lives) seems absurd, empowers a police state, and frightens me for the possible negative externalities of such a system.

Consider the case of a family that was persecuted out of a town (e.g. chased out by bigots)... should each of these individuals be penalized for the rest of their lives for having spent some amount of time "living" in that place?

Surely, that's not a good solution.

tossAfterUsing··on Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data from Cayman National Bank
oh, so it's all the global poor who are coordinating their efforts to reduce emissions of companies they don't own or operate?

thanks for clearing that up!

tossAfterUsing··on Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data from Cayman National Bank
> get with the changing tides and reform their archaic taxation codes to account for an increasingly globalised economy.

they don't know how.

tossAfterUsing··on Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data from Cayman National Bank
When you say "deserved taxes", what precisely is the reasoning behind this deservedness?

it seems to me that there's no reasonable way to lay claim to the work product of another person without being a total jerk... maybe i'm mistaken.

one of the more challenging experiences in my adult life was my dad screaming about how upset he was that windows had forced some upgrade, and as a result (?) he'd lost genealogy work he'd been doing for years (eventually he found it).

he was furious, and crying, and shouting... "i don't want any f* upgrades! just leave my f* computer alone!! i never asked for any of this, i just want to do my work"

i dont' spend a lot of time at the house any more ... and i didn't know what to tell him, so i hugged him. later i brought up linux (again) and i think we'll get to that place soon, so that he has a chance to learn before age sets in too much further.
