tussa··on Coffee machine camera at Amazon warehouse raises concerns about surveillance
> The cameras cannot capture audio, she added.

This is a classic political statement. Perhaps 100% correct.

But notice how they didn't say "no audio is recorded in the room".

tussa··on Web Scraping in Python – The Complete Guide
It applies to many other project too: cling on to the raw data as long as it isn't bogging you down too much.
tussa··on A steep rise of Hacker News in Google rankings
We'd know about them if they existed as a company today.

Remember that what became Google was Larry's and Sergey's PhD project that no one wanted to buy.

tussa··on A steep rise of Hacker News in Google rankings
I often find myself searching on HN, then Reddit (via google) and then good old sad google, in that order.

When Google arrived, it had the solution people were desperately waiting for. It was pretty much everything we wanted. And it even "wasn't evil!"

Now it feels like people at Google are just making sure they'll qualify for their annual bonus with total disregard to what happens to the company.

I forecast that in the next 1-3 years, we'll see another company steal the search market, just like Google it back in the day. But Google, don't worry, they'll "just be a search company".

tussa··on Google slips as OpenAI said to be working on search product: report
Bing's reputation is such that they'd have to be giving out free money for people to switch.

Besides, GPT was only available on Edge. Again, reputation.

tussa··on Bayesian Analysis with Python
I'd say black and white. I haven't seen anything as rubbish from Manning.
tussa··on Bayesian Analysis with Python
I'd never buy anything from Pakt without seeing it endorsed by someone I trust.

It's a shame because there is good stuff in their catalogue, but it's littered with trash.

tussa··on Postgres as queue
I believe the right terminology is immutable.
tussa··on Postgres as queue
Don't forget the plain old postit notes.
tussa··on Eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula

tussa··on How to hire low experience, high potential people
Most people I know would walk out of that trainwreck of an interview.
tussa··on Apple to EU: "Go fuck yourself"
7% is $26.8 billion for last year.
tussa··on Show HN: Pika – Simple blogging software
Pardon the vulgar words. This is just a copy paste from an Icelandic dictionary: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/p%C3%ADka

Noun

píka f (genitive singular píku, nominative plural píkur)

    (anatomy) a vulva, a pussy, a cunt
    (vulgar, slang) a bitch
tussa··on SI Units for Request Rate
Just because something can be counted in a fixed timeframe doesn't mean it makes sense to slap a Hz unit on it.

What's your frequency (in Hz) of sexual intimacy?

tussa··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
About time!
tussa··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
Ah good old planned obsolescence.

Some people argue it's just incompetence, not PO. But if you've been in the business of making the same type of hardware/appliances for more than a few years then it's definitely planned obsolescence.

tussa··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
What happened with this one?

https://hnrankings.info/39073285/

It just disappeared from HN.

tussa··on MobileDiffusion: Rapid text-to-image generation on-device
Probably because the actual product is garbage.

Remember the Google assistant demo, where it booked a table at a restaurant?

That never materialized. Google assistant is just eating crayons today.

tussa··on Coding on Copilot: Data suggests downward pressure on code quality
Would it? What does 1% reduction in code quality translate to in terms of delivery time and profits?

I don't know. But I'm pretty sure 50% reduction results in project failure and company bankruptcy.

tussa··on Why focus on AI meeting transcripts if the real problem is bad meeting prep?
Would be good to have a landing page to tell us what this does. Straight to the point and skip all this marketing PR jargon.
tussa··on A parliament of owls and a murder of crows: How groups of birds got their names
Q: What do you call two crows on a bench?

A: Attempted murder.

tussa··on Show HN: 12-colored visual interactive music theory for pop/rock MIDI (+Github)
> because I didn't want to produce anything before I analyze enough music

Just wanted to say be careful with self limiting thoughts. I never saw myself even as a musician because I am largely self taught.

It wasn't really until I was having a chat with a great musician/composer that I have tremendous respect for. He made a comment that I was a great musician when we were talking about the topic of "being a musician". Those few words from him made a huge impact on my life.

I think what I'm trying to say is: write stuff, produce stuff. You don't have to publish it or you could publish under pseudonym if you like. The fear of failure has held me back an awful lot and it's still crippling sometimes.

tussa··on Show HN: 12-colored visual interactive music theory for pop/rock MIDI (+Github)
This is very interesting. Going to check it out tomorrow!
tussa··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
> if you write the cards yourself

I'd go so far to say it's almost an requirement. Unless you have a high quality deck made specifically for the book/course/material you have.

Sadly most of the publicly available Anki are IMHO not of that quality.

tussa··on In loving memory of square checkbox
All in the name of simplicity. Eventually Apple devices will just have one button that says "give us money".
tussa··on Idea for a new hand tool: Automatic Wire Twisting Pliers
Thanks! I had this one and the Wire Wrap somehow linked in my mind but forgotten the name. Must have seen them both described on the same page a long time ago.
tussa··on Idea for a new hand tool: Automatic Wire Twisting Pliers
Yes! Thanks!
tussa··on Idea for a new hand tool: Automatic Wire Twisting Pliers
I'm sure I saw a method of making a circuit that used twisting instead of soldering. Apparently it was used quite a bit in the days gone by.

Anyone knows what that night have been?

tussa··on Duplicity: Encrypted bandwidth-efficient backup
I did the same. I had some weird path issues with Duplicity.

Borg is now my holy backup grail. Wish I could backup incrementally to AWS glacier storage but that just me sounding like an ungrateful begger. I'm incredibly grateful and happy with Borg!

tussa··on Google cancels contract with an AI data firm that's helped train Bard
> often handle many of the more distasteful parts of training AI

Does anyone have an example on what these people could have been doing for an $10/h?
