uncoder0··on Opera adds native support for blockchain domain names
Maybe I'm being naive but why would you use such an old browser? There seem to be many vulnerabilities.

uncoder0··on ‘Counter Strike’ Bug Allows Hackers to Take over a PC with a Steam Invite
Now think about this... Steam is running on nearly every gamer's PC. That's what I'm more worried about than exploits in individual games.
uncoder0··on Clubhouse Payments
It's been done before. I consider it a passive dark pattern.
uncoder0··on Amazon loses effort to install camera to watch counting of ballots in union vote
Couldn't you use something like monero but, I guess then you couldn't audit it.

Have you ever seen San Francisco internet? It's awful in many populated places and mean income is quite high. I get a gig pretty much anywhere I live in a big Texas metro area.
uncoder0··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
You've never met a female VC? We just raised our second round and we have 4 women VC's or angels on the captable now. Maybe it's just based on industry. I'm in sports/media tech.
uncoder0··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
Because the media doesn't want to draw attention to wealth inequality, it's pretty straight forward.
uncoder0··on The Air Force Finally Has the Keys to Its First New F-15 in Decades
It really depends on what you classify as a key? For the F16 there are countless pins and blocks that need to be removed before the plane is ready for the pilot to come start it up. They're not really put key in hole and turn it kind of things but I guess they could qualify.[1] There is also the APU, spinning up the turbines and a bunch of other steps before takeoff.

As an aside, really liking the new F-15's, they can carry so many AIM-120's I imagine their main purpose is to be a missile boat from BOV supporting their stealth counterparts.

uncoder0··on I’ve Spent $60k to Pay Back Student Loans and Owe More Than Before I Began
Yeah... I would even be fine if the govt covered the cost of servicing the loan to keep the interest at 0%.
uncoder0··on [dead]
Go figure... this wasn't just the news getting it wrong but, it was also one of the core points brought up in the recent impeachment of the former President.
uncoder0··on Electricity needed to mine Bitcoin is more than used by 'entire countries'
Yeah... those F22's aren't powered by magic.
uncoder0··on The U.S. Air Force just admitted the F-35 stealth fighter has failed
The F22 and F35 are far more modular. No more soldering irons and oscilloscopes were needed in the shop after the upgrade. Just swap out the module and you're good to go. Can't go into too much more detail than that.
uncoder0··on The U.S. Air Force just admitted the F-35 stealth fighter has failed
Worked around F16's and F22's when I was in and can attest that this is the source of the issue for upgrades. Everything in the software is so tightly coupled to the hardware that updating the F16's would be a monumental effort. The difference between a 4th and 5th generation air frame are night and day in terms of software capabilities. Hell, even the different between 5th generation jets can be massive on the software side such as the gap between F22 vs F35 the later being far more advanced on the software side.
uncoder0··on The road to electric is filled with tiny cars
Those don't look too safe. I can't imagine you'd survive being hit by anything bigger than a mini in any of those boxes. Of course people are buying unsafe alternatives for a fraction of a price...

disclaimer: not a tesla fanboy... I don't think they have the right hardware for FSD and that Musk is a bit too wrongheaded to admit that.

uncoder0··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
You're not comparing bitcoin to the right thing. You're comparing bitcoin's energy usage to the usage of a country. Bitcoin is competing against much bigger players than small countries it's attempting to compete with Fiat currencies. The best comparison would be to compare it to the energy required to sustain the USD as the de facto fiat currency. It's hard to get exact numbers on the DoD's full energy usage but as some points of reference they use about 4.6 billion gallons of fuel a year, 10% of the US's aviation gas usage, etc. To put the DoD's usage into perspective, "The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) consumes more energy than any other federal agency—77% of the entire federal government’s energy consumption."(https://fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R45832.pdf)
uncoder0··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
It is relevant, it makes it more absurd than Parler's bans but, I was just trying to point out they're for the same core reason.
uncoder0··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store

uncoder0··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
You, like Parler, have been targeted by the powers that be. You may have nothing else in common other than that but, you're in the same boat it seems.
uncoder0··on Tesla’s autopilot won’t achieve full autonomy, Waymo CEO says
I think this right here is the issue. They've backed themselves into the corner of 'We Don't need LIDAR'. When we were scrapping together on a 75k budget we bought budget lidar with a 180 degree linear sweep and it cost ~5k, 14 years ago, from SICK and it still was better than a modern 2020 model Tesla is at detecting a white van crossing the road in broad daylight.
uncoder0··on Tesla’s autopilot won’t achieve full autonomy, Waymo CEO says
In my opinion, the problem is Tesla and Elon refuse to acknowledge the value of LIDAR. A fused sensor approach is the only way we're going to get full autonomy. I was in this field in 2007 on the DARPA Urban challenge so maybe the state of the art indicates otherwise now however, from the NHTSA investigations into crashes from Tesla's autopilot all of them would have been fixed with even basic LIDAR.
uncoder0··on Nobody lives here: Nearly 5M Census Blocks with zero population (2014)

From my understanding the reasons it is difficult to adopt are also some of the reasons it's inherently the most secure / anonymous cryptocurrency.
uncoder0··on Ask HN: How to Prepare for National Instability?
On Number 2. Calibers to consider due to their prevalence:

1. .22lr - Doesn't pack too much punch but it's good for hunting small game. It's very easy to stock >10,000 rounds of this ammunition.

2. 9mm - Most common handgun caliber in the world and has a high enough muzzle energy to be useful over longer distances with a rifle or carbine length barrel.

3. .308 - Most common hunting cartridge and packs a huge punch. It's effective range is 800m and can drop a moose.

4. 12 Gauge Shells - Any engagement under 100m is where 00 buckshot shines. Shotguns are absolutely gruesome close up and much more effective than many other options. Super cheap as well.

5. 5.56 / .223 - This is the cartridge used by most AR15 pattern rifles in the hands of both the military and law enforcement.

Note: Buying ammo is super difficult/expensive right now since the start of covid and the protests in June. It'd be best to stick to .22lr and 12 gauge if you don't already have a supply..

uncoder0··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
That's a fair point. As a self dubbed 'free-speech' platform I'd assume they'd shy away from the excessive moderation seen on Facebook.
uncoder0··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Well funny you mention 8kun specifically it is down at the time of your comment. I find HN to be a good balance of moderation and open discussion. Like all platforms it has it's biases but, people are relatively civil and open to discussion which is commendable in the current climate of online discussion.
uncoder0··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
>"Obviously all of the insidious planning and hatred that presumably occurred on Parler is abhorrent. I think I can hate all of those things without believing that the site should be censored."

I have yet to see any evidence that the capitol protest was planned primarily on Parler. I have seen plenty of evidence that it was planned primarily on Facebook (that has since been deleted/hidden by Facebook). You'd think if the goal was to punish or curtail such events Facebook would be getting at least similar treatment as Parler.

uncoder0··on FBI warns 'armed protests' being planned at all 50 state capitols
https://capitolweekly.net/black-panthers-armed-capitol/

It's happened many times. More recently, in 1983 someone set off a bomb outside senate chambers to try and kill senators. IIRC Bill Clinton pardoned them.

uncoder0··on FBI warns 'armed protests' being planned at all 50 state capitols
I honestly wonder where these protests are being planned. I've been scouring all the places that the implied crowd frequents as I have for years (social media and it's impact fascinates me) and I've seen few mentions of a planned activity and all such mentions have been in the vain of, 'Do not go to any armed protest on inauguration day it is a false flag'. I imagine if people are actually planning things which we should believe because the FBI has said it is true it means that the plotters have moved off of public social media and into the shadows of various end to end encrypted tools.
uncoder0··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
Because they weren't arrested attacking the capitol. I just saw confirmation in this thread that at least one person was arrested with a firearm who had entered the capitol so I corrected my original comment.
