uncoder0··on Bill Gates promises to add his own billions if Congress does nuclear power push
>Is the US really able to build nuclear plants with the occasional total budget shutdown for 3 months?

When did the US Govt Shutdown for 3 months (90 days)? Source please.

uncoder0··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
To be fair there are a lot of banks offering 0 interest unsecured loans to federal employees effected by the shutdown. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/18/here-are-the-banks-and-credi...
uncoder0··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
It was a voice vote which always gets marked down as 100-0 or 0-100 in the Senate.
uncoder0··on Cambridge University releases an app that improves concentration akin to Ritalin
Could be due to userbase size but, I liked the assessment and decided to purchase one month of pro to see what else was involved. Once I bought pro I did another problem solving focused workout. My percentile on the assessment for this category was 53% before pro now that I'm pro and did one 'workout' It says I'm at 89%... I find that hard to believe.

Edit: Upon further inspection it looks like the percentiles I was reading were for the specific game. It makes sense that for the pay-walled games there aren't as many people playing so it's not a representative sample.

uncoder0··on Bitcoin’s Biggest Hack in History: 184.4B Bitcoin from Thin Air
I was there. Someone would post the code for the hard fork and most miners would switch to the chain without the bug. A chain that has infinite bitcoins on it is worthless... Just as it happened back then. I switched over as soon as I read the thread about it and saw the chatter on irc.
uncoder0··on Record Numbers of Americans Want to Leave the U.S
Yeah I was definitely hoping for a more aggressive overhaul in the cost side than what we saw with ACA but, it seemed to play out in typical DC fashion once the lobbyists got their teeth into it.
uncoder0··on Record Numbers of Americans Want to Leave the U.S
When is the last time Israel was able to project power thousands of miles from it's border for nearly two decades? They have cool toys no doubt but, not really compares to our arsenal in human history.
uncoder0··on Record Numbers of Americans Want to Leave the U.S
We really need to address the absolute cost of healthcare in this country before we can make any progress on nationalizing any portion of it. The pure costs are outrageous. We spend ~$10,000 per capita in 2017 vs ~$6,000 in Norway which has a similar per capita GDP. (PPP adjusted https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/health-...)
uncoder0··on E-cigarettes around 95% less harmful than tobacco, estimates landmark review
I've tried to do research on this before and found very few studies looking at nicotine alone. I also never saw anything about a link between oral nicotine and lung cancer so I'm suspect of this claim as well.
uncoder0··on Amazon’s Chips Threaten Intel
Only replying to the claim of disrespect. I think the disclaimer, as included, in a post positing a thesis is not disrespectful at all. gp clearly laid out that they were not an expert but had an assumption.

I will agree though that done without a disclaimer gp would have been disrespectful.

uncoder0··on South Korean law to punish boosters passes in the National Assembly
There are other uses besides bragging rights. For example there were quite a few season where if you were in the silver/bronze tier in Overwatch. You'd be eternally paired with people who wouldn't even try to work together as a team. This issue was compounded by what I saw as a bug in how healing classes were awarded for their achievements in matches wrt ranking up. If you had a team of good friends you could rank out of it but without a boost competitive lost it's flair for me. I had a friend play my account with some of his buddies who were really good to get me into gold/plat and the public groups for competitive were much more rewarding. I'm not sure if Blizzard has fixed this ELO hell situation but, that's one anecdotal reason for 'boosting' besides bragging rights.
uncoder0··on Fed Says Millennials Are Just Like Their Parents, Only Poorer
Wages/GDP Graph may have something to do with it. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=2Xa
uncoder0··on Airbnb to Remove Listings in Jewish West Bank Settlements
Interesting that they're being singled out but not unexpected. Does AirBnB operate in China, Saudi Arabia, or Turkey or do they just consider their atrocities less severe?
uncoder0··on Hate crimes rose 17% in 2017, according to new FBI data
Interesting. It also looks like the number of precincts reporting hate crimes has gone up by ~5% as well. It looks like the population covered from the participation tables increased 5.7% from 2016 so per capita it looks like a ~11% increase which is pretty significant.

Interestingly anti-black, anti-gay and anti-Muslim are all down by % compared to 2016 numbers. anti-Protestant, anti-Mormon, anti-Semetic and, anti-Sikh increased by % (not necessarily by raw number)

Another interesting tidbit is that anti-male hate crimes tripled while anti-female hate crimes remained constant. (total count of both is < 50)

uncoder0··on California Considers Placing a Mileage Tax on Drivers (2017)
Yeah I think the gp didn't quite get that weight would be multiplier on your mileage not a divisor. A 6,000 lb bmw does a lot more road damage than a 1,900 lb lotus.
uncoder0··on Facebook User Who Uploaded Pirated ‘Deadpool’ Copy Sentenced to 3 Weeks Prison
Yeah... I don't agree that prison time is appropriate but, I do suppose the sentence was not too excessive. I suppose for most people a couple weeks in the clink is better than the 1,000,000+ fines we were seeing for copyright infringement in the 90's. Although since this is criminal I guess he could still have civil liability.
uncoder0··on Slack is down
Looks like status page hasn't caught up yet. We're not on enterprise grid and having issues sending messages.
uncoder0··on AWS icon quiz
I think the guy you're replying to is from draw.io a systems diagramming platform and not from Amazon.
uncoder0··on Twitter: Setting the record straight on shadow banning
I'm curious too, not sure if this list has changed but this is what I could find: https://blog.twitter.com/official/en_us/a/2016/announcing-th...
uncoder0··on WeWork Tells Employees Meat Is Permanently Off the Company Menu
Agreed, this is almost certainly meaningless 'virtue signaling' in practice... My main question is who is the intended audience? The 1.8% of the planet that is vegetarian?

edit: thanks for the downvote, was my comment and question offensive?

uncoder0··on The rich world needs higher real wage growth
Who said Deep State? Are you using the terms actual usage? i.e. Unelected career bureaucrat? Or, are you using the colloquial definition meaning a conspiring group of unelected career bureaucrats attempting to resist change in the federal government?
uncoder0··on Bird has officially raised a whopping $300M as the scooter wars heat up
20% sounds like it'd be a lot of drag. I don't know if regenerative breaking would make sense in terms of cost and energy output but, that seems more feasible than a constant drag of an alternator hooked up to a wheel.
uncoder0··on Ask HN: Has Google search becomes particularly poor in past few months?
Anecdotally I've been noticing a steady decline in the quality of google search results for the last ~6 years. The decline has seemed to be accelerating rather than slowing.
uncoder0··on Air Force tests two turboprops as potential A-10 “replacements”
That F-18 Growler though... Worth it's weight in gold imo.
uncoder0··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
I've been out of the space for nearly 10 years. Just checked out that MRS6000 thats amazing.
uncoder0··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
SICK LMS 2xx. Weakest link was the java microcontrollers we had to use because we were majority funded by SUN. My favorite part was the old elevator relays we found in a junkyard and used for a bunch of the control system. You could hear the car 'thinking' and know what it was about to do.
uncoder0··on Steam store to sell VR porn video games
I think an allow everything model, except what's illegal in your home country (USA), is far more noble than most platforms.
uncoder0··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
You are correct. Built an autonomous car in 2007 that wouldn't hit that wall.
uncoder0··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
Same thing happens in my BMW wrt toggling the adaptive cruise to recognize a stopped car.
