va_coder··on Best Buy: Grasping at Straws
"In effect, B&M stores have been giving a huge, inadvertent subsidy to online stores the entire time and I can't help but imagine that's what's really crippled their businesses."

True, but on the other hand online stores subsidize B&M too. I've often looked at the ratings on Amazon and then bought something at a B&M because I wanted it right away or wanted an easy return, if needed.

va_coder··on Ember.js - Rich Internet Applications Done Right
That's a great project. I've been learning coffeescript, backbone, etc and it's dawned on my how little I know about JavaScript, even though I've been using it for years.
va_coder··on How newspapers can survive
I agree. Case in point: the housing bubble. I frequently read from a blog called thehousingbubbleblog from 2004 to 2008 and learned about the looming crisis from all kinds of insiders - mortgage folks, appraisers, etc. On the other hand, my local newspaper, with an enormous Sunday Real Estate section, rarely reported on it and when they did it always ended with a spokesman from the Realtors association who would put their spin on it.
va_coder··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
I hear a lot of talk about how things have changed. Have you guys read Liars Poker? This stuff has been going on since the dawn of time.
va_coder··on Paul Graham consistently says ‘um’ ~7 times per minute
I'd rather listen to an average presenter with great content than a great presenter with average content.
va_coder··on Great, Another Bootstrap Site
I think this post is ridiculous. You know how many great law firms have website themes from the 90s? How many great restaurants have that crappy flash intro?

Lots of them and I'm still going to use their service regardless.

"How depressing is it to go through this gallery of sites built with Bootstrap?"

How depressing is it to go to some site that's been hyped up, see a great design, and then see no compelling product behind it?

I don't think push state is supported in IE (except ie 10):

This makes it a non-starter for me.

va_coder··on Apple announces Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
Will someone from Canonical team up with someone like Samsung to create a kick-ass, no hassle Linux laptop with a decent battery life? I've got money I'm dying to give you!
va_coder··on Apple announces Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
It looks like an enormous distraction box. They should top it off with a widget for HN ;)
va_coder··on Steve Jobs personally asked Eric Schmidt to stop poaching employees
No. The "do no evil" was a way of saying let's not be like Microsoft and allow ourself to engage in unfair business practices.

Google is now like Microsoft.

va_coder··on Jobs was told anti-poaching idea likely illegal
What is theft?

Apple is suing multiple companies in the name of IP theft. Well I think these anti-poaching agreements are a form of theft. Employees did not receive fair market salaries.

It's not black and white, but you can't say Apple is 100% correct in going after IP theft and yet they are 100% innocent in pursuing these non-poaching agreements.

va_coder··on World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012, To Bring Permanent IPv6 Deployment
At least some of the software designed to detect malicious behavior assumes the ip is in ipv4 format. Example: I'm pretty sure fail2ban doesn't support ipv6, yet.
va_coder··on World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012, To Bring Permanent IPv6 Deployment
If this catches on it'll have a big impact on web site analytics.
va_coder··on RetroShare: secure communications with friends
offtopic: I love how with Github I can get to the source in just a few clicks. Its still a scavenger hunt with sourceforge.
va_coder··on World's Largest Wi-Fi Network Keeps Passwords in Plain Text
I agree they are different. Not having a physical security system may lead to violence against your family. Far more serious than almost any plain text password.

You got a lot of time at work to right 4 points as to why you think my point is wrong ;)

va_coder··on World's Largest Wi-Fi Network Keeps Passwords in Plain Text
How about playing the devils advocate. How many people here own homes without a security system or don't use that system every day? It can be a pain turning the system off and on every time you leave the house.

If you were in the physical security business and knew of all the violence that occurs in society you would think it's crazy to not own a security system and not use it every day.

Now put yourself in the shoes of a non technical person and you can see how convenience sometimes trumps security.

Sidenote: I love asking people in the computer security business about what kind of physical security system they use at home. Most don't use one.

va_coder··on A Solar Trade War Could Put Us All in the Dark
It's my understanding that the cost to create a new power plant powered by solar cells is cheaper than the cost to build a new plant powered by coal or oil.
va_coder··on A Solar Trade War Could Put Us All in the Dark
The story, as told to me by a guy that is very connected in the US solar industry: 1) SolarWorld, a German company, filed a complaint with the US government. 2) A bureaucrat in DC thought it would be a good idea to take the complaint seriously. 3) Now growth in the solar industry, in both China and the US, may be hurt due to the possible trade war.

Some background: http://www.electroiq.com/articles/pvw/2011/10/solarworld-fil...

It seems, if you are for free trade, this is a bad thing.

va_coder··on Official list of SOPA supporters
This is simply old and big media desperately trying to hold on to power.
va_coder··on Can You Learn To Code In One Day? We Sent A Non-Nerd To Find Out
The article was not titled 'Can you learn to speak to coders in one day'. It was titled 'Can you learn to code in one day'. And the conclusion seemed to be yes.

He didn't learn to code (as in solve problems) was my point. In fact someone like that may end up making problems.

va_coder··on Can You Learn To Code In One Day? We Sent A Non-Nerd To Find Out
I could take a day long course in marketing and speak like a marketing exec..so what? That doesn't mean I'd be capable of solving real world marketing problems.

How about on day 2 the new web coder gets an assignment: The client wants an ugly picture to cascade in the background of their website and the client is thinking about moving all their data to Sharepoint because they heard it's best solution (no matter what the problem). You're job is to deliver the the correct solution. Go.

va_coder··on Attacking NoSQL and Node.js: Server-Side JavaScript Injection (SSJS)
You're right. Finding vulnerabilities is not easy. I was talking about people in the security industry that just like to talk.
va_coder··on Attacking NoSQL and Node.js: Server-Side JavaScript Injection (SSJS)
Right on. These folks like to talk about how they can pown everything under the sun. That kind of talk is cheap and easy. On the other hand, writing an article with tangible ways to protect your MongoDB database would take some effort and would not be interesting to them.
