vmfunction··on Pg_vectorize: Vector search and RAG on Postgres
given the context of vector db, it would be Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) [1]

vmfunction··on Hetzner GEX44 with Nvidia GPU
They did officially stated on reddit [1] that they are not supporting crypto related hosting. Just wonder why? Is the GPU/CPU/Network related over use? Or legality related?

Is the path to the rust hard coded?

vmfunction··on Streaming HTML out of order without JavaScript
SPA like React, Vue, Angular, Svelt, solid, should be not needed if HTML implemented these features. Or make JSX a standard again such as E4X.
vmfunction··on Common Mistakes in Modularisation
> The only problem is that the devil is in the details. Always. The only way you can make a good decision at the top of the tree, is by being an incredibly seasoned expert that has a strong intuition about how the details are going to play out on the leaf nodes.

You got that right. Being developing over a decade for different kind of companies. "the devil is always in the details"

However it is below that gets in the way:

> is incredibly dangerous. Engineers love to think about abstractions, and leaders managing a lot of people are all too eager to buy into the promise of magic abstractions that align everyone and produce optimal results with the army of worker bees figuring out all the details of the perfect vision created by the god-like leaders.

vmfunction··on Rise of fast-fashion Shein, Temu roils global air cargo industry
Can also be Certificate Authority. That would have a better ring to it.
vmfunction··on New FCC Broadband Standards Should Consider Latency
yeah they ought to invest money on improving that instead of trying to have 5G or whatever is coming next.
vmfunction··on All Aboard the Bureaucracy Train
In US, safety is often tight to 'will we get sued for this' mentality that is associated with the corrupt legal system. This could also attributed to the over cost of building a train system in US vs other parts of the world.
vmfunction··on Incident report for February 21st, 2024
It is actually very open of them to post that! I'm sure things like that happens in larger companies, but I'm sure we won't get a incident report like that from them. I would rather work with that kind of company. Then we can also see if they learned from their lesson, and this doesn't repeat again.
vmfunction··on The Windows Ubuntu Operating System
Classic!
vmfunction··on Moving a billion Postgres rows on a $100 budget
COPY is way faster than INSERT, at least in PG.
vmfunction··on Auth0 OSS alternative Ory Kratos now with passwordless and SMS support
there are tons of articles here in HN that have shown that SIM swamp (at least in US) is much easier then trying to brute force (or using quantum computer) to break TOTP encryption. One of main reason for SMS is also meta data collection of your number.

Seems like they are doing drone testing. Hmm, should we use drone network that will interfere with mobile phone network?

vmfunction··on iMessage with PQ3 Cryptographic Protocol
Yeah talking about difficulty, then you will love this: https://www.science.org/content/article/china-s-quantum-sate...

If we really wanna be security, then entailment is a good bet. I could imagine essential financial clearing, emergency infrastructure could use this level security. Don't know how feasible it is for consumer grade usage yet though.

vmfunction··on Moving a billion Postgres rows on a $100 budget
Or wouldn't COPY from CSV be much faster?
vmfunction··on Gemma: New Open Models
Not surprising, just like when MS went to shit, and then they start to embrace 'open source'. Seems like PR stunt. And when it comes to LLM there is millions of dollar barrier to entry to train the model, so it is ok to open up their embedding etc.

Today big corp A will open up a little to court the developers, and tomorrow when it gains dominance it will close up, and corp B open up a little.

vmfunction··on ChatGPT went berserk
Yeah that is what happened to algorithmic trading. Pretty soon, what the AI/Computer do will have less and less to do with human activities (economic, human productivities, GDP, etc) We just end up in the a loop of algorithm trading with algorithm, LLM conversing with other LLM.
vmfunction··on OpenAI – Application for US trademark “GPT” has failed
yeah, but in US, both are in the same office: USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office)
vmfunction··on What made Earth a giant snowball 700M years ago? Scientists have an answer

vmfunction··on US Government makes $42M bet on open cell networks: Open RAN dream stays alive
Thanks for pointing that out. Which makes me think it is better to have Oxide approach instead of something like OCP. It seems to only really benefit large organisations.
vmfunction··on What made Earth a giant snowball 700M years ago? Scientists have an answer
Better than nuclear weapon, no nasty fall out. Better than death star, you still have a planet afterwards.
vmfunction··on US Government makes $42M bet on open cell networks: Open RAN dream stays alive
Wow thanks for pointing that out!!!

> Facebook's Tioga Pass[1] the innovations in that system are simply not available for any price to the enterprise buyer

Seems like OCP may not be as open as appears, when some 'secrete sauce' is behind FB wall. Seems like better to go with Oxide instead of this OCP approach. Disappointing, but not surprising coming from FB or any of FANNG group.

vmfunction··on FCC: Telcos must now tell you when your personal info is stolen
How about, a huge fine! And use the fine to found EFF or open source security experts to audit them (All the big Telcos!) and harden their securities. At this piont Telcos are should be treated as public utility companies!
vmfunction··on US Government makes $42M bet on open cell networks: Open RAN dream stays alive
Or just go to OCP site: https://www.opencompute.org/about

Looks like something started with Facebook. Sounds wonder if Oxide involved in it?

vmfunction··on AI needs so much power that old coal plants are sticking around
From my limited understanding of this AI field, that it cost over million $ to train the model, after that the the query against the model is fast and doesn't cost a lot money. So with this AI/LLM it is more about the upfront cost, and how well the model is train using that millions dollars, and according to some data expert seems to be an art and a science [1]. Some AI experts here please correct me if I'm wrong.

vmfunction··on Can tin foil hats block anything? (2015)
> We hope this report will encourage the paranoid community to develop improved helmet designs to avoid falling prey to these shortcomings.

Can we just replace tin foil hats with Faraday cage!

vmfunction··on Time Series Forecasting vs Regression: An informal guide
> This process is typically called “feature engineering”, and is part art and part science. Choices on including or excluding certain variables, and how they are translated into numerical parameters, can significantly impact the model’s performance.

According to this article, to make good predictive/regression model, we need a good artist and a good engineer!

vmfunction··on The Ladybird browser project
For me it is like:

WebKit -> Chrome

Bun -> Node/Deno

It is good to have competitions in Ecmascript landscape, even though it is currently a duopoly, but with introduction of AWS LLRT, and QuickJS, maybe small player can even have a say so in this. It would be good the big corp comply to the Ecmascript and Web API standard.

vmfunction··on The Ladybird browser project
Don't forget WebKit. It leads to project such as https://surf.suckless.org
vmfunction··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
In node there is EJS which is basically PHP templating with JS.
