vmfunction··on Apple now requires a judge's consent to hand over push notification data
We shouldn't be storing ANY personal stuff on company CLOUD. We all ought to have OUR own data, usb online.
vmfunction··on Plane got to top spot in project management on GitHub in less than a year
well some people like docker and some don't. If you are in the self-hosting realm, personally I think it is fair that the people doing it knows about DevOp or systemadmin, or else pay someone to host it for you.
vmfunction··on Created a free website that simplifies stock analysis
Is it libre/free source?

https://github.com/name-redacted

Nothing seems to be there.

Or it is just freemium.

vmfunction··on Gaussian Head Avatar: Ultra High-Fidelity Head Avatar via Dynamic Gaussians
It is academia ;-)
vmfunction··on Show HN: Recompyle – A JavaScript developer-friendly console / debugger
Or the debug in vscode, then again in vscode you can edit the code also. Maybe this console has VM binding. Just feel like it should just be a vscode plugin.
vmfunction··on Governments spying on Apple, Google users through push notifications
Well a republic or was an oligarchy now, yeah just words and semantics...
vmfunction··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
>A universal chat application would be amazing

It would be, however would not bet my chatting account history on a phone number. Phone number does get lost over time. Email is more reliable, but may be a private key for authentication instead. Also a modern day chat app, one would expect to have chatting over bluetooth as well Internet such as Briar, and chatting over Tor such as Quite would be much more needed.

vmfunction··on Web Components Eliminate JavaScript Framework Lock-In
Thank you. Finally someone mentions Solid, it got all the good part of React, and none of the bloated parts.

Personally, JSX is the mainly thing that makes React attractive. As JSX is just modern E4X. It really ought to be put into the ES standard again instead of this Web Component stuff.

Another good JSX implementation (SSR) is: https://nanojsx.io

If you just want something light JSX, then this seems the way to go for now.

vmfunction··on The Periodic Table of Tools
very cool. It would be nice to have this for bike tools.
vmfunction··on Demystifying Web Push Notifications
Wouldn't this be easier to maintain a websocket/socket.io type of connection with the web page? And just push new events from the server to the page directly?
vmfunction··on A Node, TypeScript, TS-Node and ESM experience that works
thanks for sharing! Didn't know about this one.
vmfunction··on A Node, TypeScript, TS-Node and ESM experience that works
or esno, which is tsx with esbuild.
vmfunction··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
These sounds like classic MS behaviour. It is kind of thing that ought to addressed in anti-trust case.
vmfunction··on YouTube's Adblock detection might break the law in the EU
That would be a welcoming change! With html5 standard, pages can have text, image, video, even css animation, all without JS.

If the page need to load some SPA app, draw the canvas (accessing GPU), or WebUSB, etc, then ask for permission would be a good idea. Just like how accessing ones' camera and mic requires permission. It will force web developers to do less stuff in JS for just display. And if an app type of application is needed, then ask for permission.

vmfunction··on Scandinavian spy drama: An intelligence chief who came under state surveillance
It is a good idea to read other country's news about another country. It is even better if the countries has some beefs. I'm not saying the info will be totally accurate, but you will get some info that the gov doesn't want the public to know such as this. Sometime they may mention some scandal, but it will be in a limited hang out ways.

At this point main stream media are just talking pieces for the government and corporations, not really news.

vmfunction··on Unemployed Man Uses AI to Apply for 5k Jobs, Gets 20 Interviews
AI is just the new spam.
vmfunction··on When Linux Spooked Microsoft: Remembering 1998's Leaked 'Halloween Documents'
yeah with the Jedi defence contract who knows how MS is actually making money. MS making money is NOT necessarily a good thing for users or their own share holders.
vmfunction··on When Linux Spooked Microsoft: Remembering 1998's Leaked 'Halloween Documents'
MS only warmed up to Linux/Open Source, cause they were getting obliterated by Google on search and Apple with smart phones. If they don't do anything to warm up to the open source developers community, they would be obsolete.

Personally I still don't trust any open source or close source products from MS or any corporation. There is ALWAYS some strings attached. However, good thing about open sourcing software, is that you can always find alternative version that is compiled by the community or CE edition.

e.g: Use VSCodium instead of VSCode. Use ungoogled-chromium instead of Chrome. Use WebKit instead of Safari

vmfunction··on Oh my poor business logic
>The more organisational layers you have between you and the customers - architects, business analysts, and the like - the more disconnected your work will be from the business value.

But what about software middle managers? What's going to happen to them??? Honestly, for over a decade that is how I worked on professional software project. I never saw the need of manager. And software development works better when there are NO middle manger just customer and developers. Of course I'm aware most developers don't care about the business logic.

Seem like management stuff in software is just for show. Corps are just trying to impose their process on software developers, which don't really work.

vmfunction··on Library Genesis in Numbers: Mapping the Underground Flow of Knowledge (2018) [pdf]
Yup hnews is not a good place to do market research for general population.
vmfunction··on The First Cyber Nation-State Recognized by a UN Member Nation
mmm has anyone used Estonian digital citizenship. Digital and citizenship just doesn't really sit well for me. But I can be wrong, looking for someone who have actually have a citizenship to comment on the all the legal implication, document manage, etc related to the digital citizenship.
vmfunction··on Unwrapit provides a way to handle errors in JS/TS
have you look at ts-fp, it is ts not js, but still.
vmfunction··on Show HN: Instant API – Build type-safe web APIs with JavaScript
Or json schema, this https://www.npmjs.com/package/zod-to-json-schema

Json schema is more universal, and it can be used in .NET, Java, etc.

vmfunction··on China is becoming a data black hole, says short seller Aandahl
Ok let me reword that, a well informed population with a actual indepdant media (news paper, tv, radios, magazines) that is NOT owned by a handful of people just a talking piece for one party or another.
vmfunction··on The First Cyber Nation-State Recognized by a UN Member Nation
Yeah seems goes along the same way at the Estonian digital citizenship that showed up here a few years ago.

Does sound like a PR stunt. Personally wouldn't touch it.

>It's why we in the west still have democracy, democracy is a lot more inefficient but its very flexible and sustainable.

Democracy will only work when the population is well educated. US currently is an oligarchy https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18877447

vmfunction··on Security Vulnerability of Switzerland's E-Voting System
>I don't think that is a biased take. An attack on paper voting is always going to be more complex thus making it more secure.

Until some genius figure teleportation, then cats are out of the bag ;-)

Anyone knows if Star Trek figured that one?

vmfunction··on LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees
Wow interesting! I've being using LinkedIn since it first started, and honestly this is first time I have heard a positive story that is not written by MS or LinkedIn staff or related people. I guess a broken clock can be right 2 times a days. Still won't touch LinkedIn with a 10 feet pole since the MS take over.
vmfunction··on LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees
I have not touched LinkedIn since MS took over. And I'm not surprised by what it has become. Pretty much when a big corp takes over a social media this can be expected. Please get off LinkedIn. It is a cancer of digital society.
vmfunction··on Invidious – An open source alternative front-end to YouTube
yes! However youtube got stuck with a lot great videos. Unless someone form IPFS or torrent community are already secretively archiving youtube videos. Then youtube video random view key will just serve as an index for videos for a globally archived videos (the video can also sit on owner's hard drive) (kinda like what archive.org is doing for web page). Then someone can write a plugin to republish the video to peertube, web torrent, odyssey all the other alternative video sharing sites. This shall at least to start take people's dependancy off of youtube/alphabet/google platform/infrastructure.
