vmfunction··on Microgravity-induced muscle atrophy: Implications for long-duration spaceflights
You can always just train like some anime character or kung fu masters:

vmfunction··on The largest DDoS attack to date, peaking above 398M rps
> pay Google, Amazon or Cloudflare a protection tax.

Just FYI: hetzner has free DDoS https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/ddos-schutz

I'm sure other hosting companies also offers it.

vmfunction··on Extism makes WebAssembly easy
Assembly is not bytecode! V8 already has bytecode for the web. WASM is meant to run faster and more efficient computations.
vmfunction··on Choosing vector database: a side-by-side comparison
>Longer story: One day one of our table went missing on Aurora, we couldn't figure out why, it was in the schema, etc. Devops panicked and restarted the instance, and then another table was missing. We ended up creating 10 empty tables and restarted it until it hit one of those.

Are there any report this? How come this is the first time I heard of this? How can companies trust this kind of managed DB services?

vmfunction··on Show HN: Shuttle – Build and ship backends without writing infrastructure files
Personally it is better to prototype with es6 above or /typescript. Python is great, but don't like the indentation format. Sometime I just want a line of code to be in certain level indentation if I'm just prototyping. At this day and age just skip node use Deno for prototyping.
vmfunction··on Tech doesn’t make our lives easier. It makes them faster
The post may be only referring to digital/information tech.
vmfunction··on MiniOS – a lightweight Linux distribution designed for USB drive
with usb at about 256gb - 1tb now. Looking forward to a world were everyone carries their computer in a usb.
vmfunction··on Essence: A desktop OS built from scratch, for control and simplicity
It is still a very inspiring project. Someone with CPP experience can keep on working on it.

Would have being nice if it in Rust. The video gave a lot nice insight to having a tabbed window based UI. It makes it more like browser. That idea can very much be adapted be used in project such as Fomos or even create a WM in Linux/FreeBSD.

vmfunction··on Essence: A desktop OS built from scratch, for control and simplicity
> developer toolchain/experience and It was covered a bit in the video. Very nice way for user/designer to theme their own desktop.
vmfunction··on How to evaluate a product roadmap, for engineers
You are right, as a civilisation we have no idea how to do risk assessment, and often when sh*t hits the fan, it is something we can't do anything about. At the current rate it is better to NOT do any risk analysis, and just be prepared for the worse case scenario.
vmfunction··on Cache headers could probably be more aggressive
> but only over HTTP POST so it broke caching on CDNs.

That's why when making request related to realtime data in the server, a POST is always needed! GET is ONLY get for static content.

vmfunction··on Show HN: ElectricSQL, Postgres to SQLite active-active sync for local-first apps
Thank you for saying this. I can see this will help app developers to make more apps that can work in airplane mode. More and more we need apps like that. Why do we need internet for an app to work locally on my computer. The whole google, meta, apps are just annoying to require the user to be online to work.
vmfunction··on Permazen: a different persistence layer for Java
Think of it like the localStore in Deno. I guess at this point all the lang are going to jump on the band wagon. Why not, all lang should have native KV store.

However if we are to jump on in JDK world, persistence is not hard. Java have supurb db like H2 with full postgres compliance, that can be embedded in memory.

vmfunction··on Java 21 makes me like Java again
That what I often wonder, if one is going to start using a new language why go? Rust at least it gave one memory safety and not having to use GC make it more stable usage of resource as the discord article have already pointed out. Seem like go is just google's .NET, every big corp need to have their own language.
vmfunction··on What if OpenDocument used SQLite? (2014)
That is a good argument, however many people like some big game development company start to ship with GB of json file, at that point just use SQLite. It will be faster to query load. Also if you look at how DB such as Mongo (Not promoting them in any way), but when Maildir is used aginst Mongo for file storage, Mongo saves a lot of disk space. Again, it is about how we want to store files? NixOS is a quite a way to think about having a file system or db/store.
vmfunction··on What if OpenDocument used SQLite? (2014)
At this point, why are we still using JSON/XML when there is SQLite for new projects? Stop the non sense of JSON/XML. SQLite is like json, but very queryable. Just send SQLite files around.

MongoDB also saves document db type of store space just FYI.

vmfunction··on Skip the API, ship your database
In addition if you are using postgres, then there is postgresRest to make api really quick and nice.
vmfunction··on The Pirate Preservationists
Seems like something like Archive.org is needed for Apps. IPA and APK.
vmfunction··on Do you struggle to find ethical work?
At this point nothing is clean in the current economy in the world. The current world is build by warlords (British Empire), robber baron (Rocketfeller, Ford), drug dealers (HSBC), or descendant of them. But some of us may have fiduciary duties to our family or dependants, or student loans, this is only reason that big corp can get people working for them.

If you don't have any of these responsibilities, then do something else that is meaningful for your life.

vmfunction··on China's ancient water pipe networks show no evidence of a centralized authority
>One of the biggest mistakes that people tend to make is looking at the current population and using it to fill in the gaps in the archaeological record.

That how the Europeans never found the Amazon lost cities, because earlier explorers were looking for cities like European cities.

vmfunction··on Microsoft blames outage on small staff, automation failures
This is what co-location do. Some hosting company still does that. So look for those, then you just bring your own hardware appliances. Then you just using their facilities, uninterrupted power supplies.
vmfunction··on Why discord is switching from go to rust (2020)
Seems like Discord is data usage pattern has reach the limits of LRU cache and latency.

Nice detailed article, makes one think twice about using GC based language for cases like Discord.

vmfunction··on LCD, Please
>Oh, you can also allow canvas fingerprinting, but that seems like a bad idea - maybe in a separate firefox profile just for sites like this one..

No it won't help. That is big problem with finger printing. It basically logs your computer hardward with the profile.

So no matter how many times you make new profiles. This can be mitigated via VM. However with bugs such as zenbleed, VM may not be enough.

Nothing is private has a good demo. https://github.com/gautamkrishnar/nothing-private That is reason why we need to not allow WEI or anything like that on massive scale.

vmfunction··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Also duckduckgo has apple maps online too:

https://duckduckgo.com/?hps=1&q=maps&ia=web&iaxm=maps

Just noticed it recently.

vmfunction··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
with giant data beast company like google, everything is about indirect revenue. Just because map doesn't make money, doesn't mean it won't drive up other ad revues.
vmfunction··on Conduit: Simple, fast and reliable chat server powered by Matrix
Yeah seems like a good alternative to run the dentrite (go) server. That seems to be in development forever. At this point, the python server is taking too much resources, nice to see an alternative to go the server.
vmfunction··on LeMUR: LLMs for Audio and Speech
No, but no tech users will think it is magic.
vmfunction··on The Dark Side of A.I.: Understanding the Dangers of Deepfake Images
Looking forward to that, when digital images/video no longer means anything to people. Hopefully then people will lean to ONLY trust and value real in person interactions... Until of course we invents holodeck ;-)
vmfunction··on BRICS gold-backed currency coming in August
>> Gold standard fell apart because it was a bad way to manage currency in a modern industrialised society

Gold market is heavily manipulated by big player such as Chase, or if you go back far enough by city state like the Venetians.

Having a gold back currency is just a insurance against the central banks to not just print money too erratically. If you look around the US, several states have already created bullion repositories. Not to mention countries such Russia, China, Germany have being repatriating gold for quite some times now.

vmfunction··on Creating a search engine with PostgreSQL
It is what Deno is doing, by putting what traditionally known as the middleware on the edge with a db (localStore). Essentially emulating the browser stack in some ways. Be very interesting to see different kind of code sharing amongst Deno edge nodes and browser.
