vmfunction··on Ask HN: Stuck as a developer for 15 years. How to become a manager?
it is also about why are you there. Both friends and I have had manager that are decades younger than us. Wasn't really a problem. Depending what if you want to deal with meetings, C-Level people, or just develop software at your job.
vmfunction··on Let's have a chat about Java licensing, says unsolicited Oracle email
Don't know about now, but many versions ago, Android Studio, just doesn't not start in OpneJDK. It is mainly the UI my guess is. It requires one to install OracleJDK to work. Don't know if it is still the case or not. For most headless stuff, I would image there shouldn't be any difference.
vmfunction··on How to think about async/await in Rust
>Not specific to rust, but I think asynchronous programming in general is a hype.

Hmm, wasn't the whole point of doing things in event loop because it way out perform thread-based architecture? Like when Nginx way out performs Apache? On a single core CPU of course.

Edit: It is not that event-loop is better than thread-based, just in a web server scenario it just perform much better.

vmfunction··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
Sounds like Reddit need to have a RSS feed or rethink their business model. Maybe Reddit will just be a type of social benefiting site that doesn't rely on a business model. Don't know what the VCs that funded them will think though.
vmfunction··on Learnings from kCTF VRP's 42 Linux kernel exploits submissions
Just wonder if the the reward for security bounty would increase such as 1 - 10 million dollars to match the black market, do you think it would attract more serious security researchers?
vmfunction··on Myths Programmers Believe about CPU Caches (2018)
> From the point of view of the software, running a bunch of instructions in sequence, you do get stale values. You can have two threads wait for a signal, then both read a value, and both get different results. You can have a thread set a flag after it's done editing some values, have another thread wait for the flag, and then after waiting it sees the edits as still incomplete.

Isn't that implementation of semaphore? I would imagine that should already being done in the CPU implementation?

vmfunction··on A 5.7 Terapixel Mosaic of the Surface of Mars
wow a lot of big files, maybe they should publish it over WebTorrent
vmfunction··on ES Modules Are Terrible
>What we lost is just this

>``` const someInitializedModule = require("module-name")(someOptions); ```

That can partially be done such as:

import {jason} from 'https://example.com/foo.js?name=jason

On the script site use: const url = new URL(import.meta.url); console.log(`${url.searchParams.get("name")`);

vmfunction··on ES Modules Are Terrible
yes, RingoJS is also using CommonJS, but yeah CommonJS was mainly for Node. However, now we have standard from import that is part of ES standard. Would rather be using that now that most runtime and browser has implemented it.
vmfunction··on Is parallel programming hard, and, if so, what can you do about it?
what about "green threads" that is not managed by the OS like https://tokio.rs ?
vmfunction··on The growing pains of database architecture
> Though it could also make sense to horizontally shard them over regions. that is assuming the user who are editing the document are in the same geo region. How one shard the db, would depending on some internal stats of figma and how the applications are used.
vmfunction··on Sandstorm: Open-source platform for self-hosting web apps
I have tried for a client who wanted to install open source app in server with sandstorm about 3 or 4 years ago, it is just very slow at the time. Hope they improved that since.
vmfunction··on 27 years later and the Psion 3a is still wonderful (2020)
Would beg to differ. Many people would love to a e-ink display (no color needed). It is better on the eye, and saves battery, and you can read it in the sunlight. It is not good for watching video, but I'm sure I'm not the only who don't like watching moving pictures on small screens. Most ppl just want to read and send text.
vmfunction··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
Well with the kind money that agency has, they can buy the whole world several times over. Amazon is good example. Just give them a gov contract, and all the sudden company don't have to be so profitable in their daily business anymore. And guess who will Amazon beholden to? their day to day customers whoever is giving the big contract?
vmfunction··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
with $17B, we can literally 3D print a bunch of micro housing. Seems like money is still wasted in Bureaucrat, red tap and some kind financial fraud.
vmfunction··on That people produce HTML with string templates is telling us something
for sure not suggesting using E4X as it is, JSX has evolved a lot from E4X. For example, as small implementation such as https://nanojsx.io would be a good start.
vmfunction··on That people produce HTML with string templates is telling us something
pretty sure JSX can be work into the ES standard. As E4X was part of JS before 2014.
vmfunction··on JJ: JSON Stream Editor
that is what gets me, why did the file get to 20g? At that point just ship a SQLite file.
vmfunction··on Deno 1.34: Deno compile supports NPM packages
unless node convert to Rust, the future is Deno or rust based approach. The main reason to NOT use node is the who C backend.
vmfunction··on VanJS (Vanilla JavaScript): smallest reactive UI framework
The syntax is more like mithril.js, think would just stick with that or go with solidjs.
vmfunction··on VanJS (Vanilla JavaScript): smallest reactive UI framework
what is interesting about that is when I saw solid.js performance chart, it is the closest to vanilla js in terms of performance.
vmfunction··on Meta fined $1.3B over data transfers to U.S.
1.1% seems like slap on the wrist or cost of doing shady business. 20% would be more appropriate, then again this seems like political discussion between US and EU.
vmfunction··on Noise is all around us
can imagine that in Berlin, but a city with 10.000 people?
vmfunction··on The JavaScript ecosystem is delightfully weird
Hmm, it's a shame that Little Javascripter is not mentioned: https://www.crockford.com/little.html That is really the only positive reason to use JS.
vmfunction··on Protocol Wars
The fact that it takes so long to transition to IPv6 and like many other obstruction to technological/social progress are economic and business gain for a certain small group of people and organisations.
vmfunction··on CheerpJ 3.0: a JVM replacement in HTML5 and WASM to run Java on modern browsers
JS does have thread.

Worker on the client side:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Web_Workers...

Server-side/nodejs: https://nodejs.org/api/worker_threads.html#worker_threads_wo...
