voidUpdate··on Using A.I. to decode communication of sperm whales
AI and machine learning? Wow, we're combining automated computer learning with automated computer learning! Whatever will they think of next?
voidUpdate··on Example.com just launched the biggest redesign in decades
People depend on all sorts of weird stuff working exactly as expected. https://www.hyrumslaw.com/

As an example, depending on "man -w" not outputting anything to stderr: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/405783/why-does-man...

voidUpdate··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
But wouldn't they have needed to do that for KH satellites too? If they're making new equipment and processes, they'll be saving a lot less money from using KH mirrors
voidUpdate··on Rpi – a Rust rewrite of the Pi agent, 10× faster startup
That name won't be confusing at all
voidUpdate··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
If the manufacturing for the 2.4 meter mirrors existed a decade earlier, and Hubble used the existing processes, does that mean all the KH-11 satellites also have the spherical aberration problem that Hubble has?
voidUpdate··on Fuck Android Developer Verification Program
Because at my work, clients want the general public to be able to install their apps sometimes, and my department does native apps, a different department does web stuff. If you want Joe Public to be able to install your app, you have to go through the Google or Apple stores.

However, we don't directly dev in Kotlin or Swift, we use Unity, which can export directly to an APK, or an XCode project (which has to be compiled a second time which is a nightmare). Sometimes we have to write native plugins to access device specific features (Last time I needed to was to access the FoV of the device's main camera), but it's not common, Unity has great support for most things you want to do out of the box

EDIT: I forgot, there are some situations where we supply an android or ios app to clients through our own app store, but I believe that devices have to be "enrolled", especially for ios. Generally though, Joe Public will want apps through the official stores

voidUpdate··on Before pixels: Modular industrial dashboards
Does anyone know how these actually worked under the hood? Was it essentially just a mounting solution, and you wire them up how you need on the back, or were they essentially pluggable modules with some kind of control system attached to the board? I can't imagine it's the second option, given the timeframe, but I kinda want to see a system like that now
voidUpdate··on Mathematical Origami
I looked at the page, and decided I wanted to see how to origami some of the archimedian solids, which are lower down the page. I don't find platonic solids as interesting so I didn't click on them. I saw they existed but you can't see that they have folding instructions unless you click on them
voidUpdate··on Mathematical Origami
Ah, I didn't see those
voidUpdate··on Mathematical Origami
It should probably be noted somewhere that this is more "papercraft" than "origami", and the thing you download is just the net of the solid, not instructions to make what's in the picture.

Also saddened by the lack of Catalan solids

voidUpdate··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I was sold it as "Red Mars is where they colonise mars" but from the part I've read so far, it seems pretty colonised already, and the racism has already set in
voidUpdate··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I mean, it's not all technical descriptions. There's humor, problem solving, blowing up historic space hardware with a short circuit. Exactly what I'd expect from trying to survive on mars
voidUpdate··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I started reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars, but I found it much drier than I expected. It's been a lot of space politics so far, and less colonising mars. I was hoping for more The Martian. I might just read The Martian again instead
voidUpdate··on Booted up in 1993, this server still runs – but not for much longer (2017)
The article is very vague about what it actually does, so I don't know if it's connected to the internet or not :/
voidUpdate··on Booted up in 1993, this server still runs – but not for much longer (2017)
> "This system runs an older version Stratus proprietary VOS operating system, which Hogan believes hasn’t been updated since the early 2000s. “It’s been extremely stable,’ he said."

That's not particularly surprising to be honest. If it's a server operating system, on hardware that doesn't change, there's not really a reason to update the OS unless there's a security problem found

voidUpdate··on Alan Kay's answer to “Did the ENIAC have a BIOS”?
Octal sockets are just tube sockets with 8 pins, it doesn't mean they calculate in octal
voidUpdate··on Alan Kay's answer to “Did the ENIAC have a BIOS”?
AFAIK, a "byte" is 8 bits, but a "word" wasn't quite decided yet, and they were often divisible by 3, making octal make more sense
voidUpdate··on What About Rails?
Find the exe online, double click to run, ignore the warning about registry keys which might just be because I'm on a work computer
voidUpdate··on Tell HN: AGI Is Here
So why do humans keep trying to make a better LLM when the LLM is generally intelligent and should be able to make its own smarter LLM?
voidUpdate··on I'm Tired of Being on the Network
Ah, a bum bag!
voidUpdate··on What About Rails?
If the language doesn't matter, why aren't all LLMs outputting assembly code directly for maximum performance?
voidUpdate··on What About Rails?
Where's the irony? They are happy for anyone to be a part of their community, unless you are making other in their community feel unwelcome. It's spelled out in their code of conduct for you. If you're making innuendos that make other people feel unwelcome, you are not welcome
voidUpdate··on What About Rails?
Whats the expiration date on, say, the windows 95 version of paint? Because it still loads just fine on my current windows computer, does everything I'd expect from a paint program, and gets out of the way when I don't need it anymore
voidUpdate··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Id want to be careful of it getting cold and damp if you put a consumer camera inside a fridge. You'd ned one rated for that sort of environment
voidUpdate··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
I would be interested to see a leaderboard comparison between male and female cubers. As far as I know, there should be no real biological advantage either way
voidUpdate··on Fixing the Portobello Police Station Clock
Do you know if they also scan for drug residue using those devices? A while back I was travelling through a German airport, and got pulled aside to get the skin on my stomach and the inside of my bag swabbed, and I assume tested in the same kind of machine. I don't know what I did to warrant a further inspection, but I wasn't going to make a fuss. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if they'd pulled aside one of the guys in my group who were definitely using drugs
voidUpdate··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I just had a quick scan of the incident report (https://llis.nasa.gov/llis_lib/pdf/1009464main1_0641-mr.pdf) and:

> "The output from the SM_FORCES application code as required by a MSOP Project Software Interface Specification (SIS) was to be in metric units of Newtonseconds (N-s)"

(MSOP = Mars Surveyor Operations Program). One of the recommendations was

> "Conduct software audit for specification compliance on all data transferred between JPL and Lockheed Martin Astronautics"

So yes, NASA should have checked the provided software more thoroughly, but also Lockheed should have actually followed the spec they were given. I doubt the SIS is available online to check any harder

voidUpdate··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
A piece of software Lockheed made gave its outputs in US Customary units (not following their specification), and NASA expected it in SI units (as their specification expected)
voidUpdate··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Would less football be a bad thing? It's the only sport I know where the governing body have to advise the police on how to deal with fan violence, such as "please don't use tear gas on them"
voidUpdate··on Tell HN: Claude Code just accepted and signed a contract for me. Without asking
But if I paste an image of your signature onto a contract that says you give me a million pounds, that can't be legally binding for you, can it?
