wavefunction··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
BOTH SIDES fuck dude
wavefunction··on When Stockton gave people cash, they got jobs
You have to qualify for the expanded unemployment benefits but I suppose that's a detail to be overlooked if it's inconvenient.
wavefunction··on When Stockton gave people cash, they got jobs
thanks for your anecdotes
wavefunction··on The disappearance of a Soviet skiing party in 1959
I find the simulation convincing in terms of physics but not in terms of the forensic facts of the case as documented at the time.
wavefunction··on When Stockton gave people cash, they got jobs
I posted this below but the facts available actually discredit this narrative that enhanced benefits are causing people to sit out labor market participation. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/25/people-receiving-unemploymen...
wavefunction··on When Stockton gave people cash, they got jobs
NPR had an expert on unemployment and unemployed people on this morning who pointed out that this narrative is not supported by facts. Instead, the people who received these enhanced benefits have searched for jobs at a higher rate than those without.

wavefunction··on The FBI seized safe deposit boxes knowing ‘some’ belonged to ‘honest citizens’
I am in favor of that. Anything that provides more independent oversight of police since they can't seem to self-regulate.
wavefunction··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
The process was highly politicized and one party and the one in power while the census was administered stood to gain from sowing doubt, fear and confusion. I think the actual results gathering was handled normally but the idea of course was to depress census response rates.
wavefunction··on Honeywell gets hit with $13M fine for defense export violations
How does that change things with regard to the status of controlled information?
wavefunction··on Fungi on Mars? Evidence of Growth and Behavior from Sequential Images [pdf]
Toy helicopters that can peek over rocks and take short trips to locate potential sites like the article describes without having to commit the entire rover in that direction. Kind of like toys.
wavefunction··on Japan should cut losses and tell the IOC to take its Olympic pillage elsewhere
It's just an opinion piece in an American newspaper. This is an odd post to be sure.
wavefunction··on Tracking “Dark Ships” with New Satellite Technology
That's the least interesting part of the article. The stuff about North Korean submarines and Chinese breaking North Korean sanctions is far more interesting.
wavefunction··on Microsoft bids $44.6B to buy Yahoo (2008)
I could be wrong but it looks like Opera introduced tabs in 2009 with v10.5 while Firefox's first release was in 2002. Unless we're referring to different things.
wavefunction··on Why are there so many Canadians in India?
It's also a noun as "center." "Vaccine-center" and etc.
wavefunction··on I need to explain to you just how dire America's Pokémon card crisis is
>Sigh. The lottery is a tax on stupidity.

This sentiment has been trotted out before but if I get $1 worth of entertainment from a lottery ticket then it's not a tax on anything. Most people don't expect to win the lottery but the thought of "what if" is worth the money they pay. And the money seems to go to good causes in most states so I can't see how anyone could criticize playing the lottery unless you're doing it with money you can't afford to lose. This is all supported by very simple economic principles, as well. You might as well say a $6 Starbucks coffee is a tax on stupidity.

wavefunction··on 'Minting' electronic cash (1999)
Minting has been throughout its long history associated with fraud. There's a reason people used to have to weigh the minted coins they received from transactions to make sure the minter was delivering the amount of gold or silver or other backing metal in the coin's alloy. Just another perspective on minting...
wavefunction··on Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Foxconn
Places that were serious contenders for Amazon HQ definitely have other employers and options. There is no way that Amazon HQ is ending up in Sioux Falls or Laramie or something.
wavefunction··on Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Foxconn
Roads and infrastructure don't pay for themselves and considering the scale of some incentive packages offered and the paltry outcomes like the one we're discussing in Wisconsin and elsewhere the assertion that there's a "net gain" deserves serious scrutiny and supporting evidence.
wavefunction··on Space junk removal is not going smoothly
It's probably not the aluminum sphere that was used in the impact but included for reference to allow readers to visualize the effect of impact versus the size of the debris.
wavefunction··on How People Get Rich Now
I find the notion that paying a CEO 321 times the salary of a worker in cash to be problematic for society while paying the CEO 321 the salary of a worker in stock options/grants is not not problematic to society to be completely unconvincing. Both illustrate to me the historic and increasing inequality in distribution of income and wealth. Asking me to ignore that divide and instead sympathize with someone like Carl Icahn is obscene in a humorous way.
wavefunction··on RMS addresses the free software community
He certainly doesn't sound like he intends to change or work to change.
wavefunction··on Google used past bid data to boost win rate in advertising auctions
According to this[0] ad revenue accounts for 82% of Alphabet's first quarter revenue in 2020 and I imagine a similar portion of previous quarters. You may have accidentally illuminated why this is probably a bigger scandal than it appears at first.

wavefunction··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
Poor people vote in their own interest just like anyone else but their options are limited and often the opportunity to consider all their options is truncated by the vagaries of life on the edge of dissolution.
wavefunction··on Not Your Typical Horizontal Rules
Nice tip, love to learn little things like this.
wavefunction··on Who Owns the Nile?
Is it? I think you'll find similar "involvement" around the world. The Great Partition of Pakistan and India, and Pakistan and Bangladesh/East-Pakistan spring to mind.
wavefunction··on Microsoft wins $21.9B contract with U.S. Army to supply AR headsets
I can't speak for your country but at least in the US the government is "We the People" or at least those of us interested enough to get involved whether by voting or running for office. If my democratic society has decided through an open and fair democratic process to require certain levels of taxation then it's my responsibility to society to meet those regulations. If I disagree with what has been collectively decided then my recourse is to convince enough of my fellow citizens to change the regulations. I don't see how that has anything to do with war. It seems like a very hyperbolic claim to make to me.
wavefunction··on Overnight Pizza and the Consistent Unreliability of Expert Guidelines
Or you can just unplug the toaster.
wavefunction··on The French armed forces are planning for high-intensity war
Turkey was already involved in recent hostilities. Armenia alleged Turkish troops and air support were involved in the fighting in December while Azerbaijan claims Turkish involvement was limited to "military advisors".
wavefunction··on Amazon loses effort to install camera to watch counting of ballots in union vote
Doesn't sound like they know the actual vote though? At least how you've quoted the description. Just the name and title of the employee.
wavefunction··on Bitcoin as a Battery
I can at least light a dollar on fire for some small measure of warmth!
