wavefunction··on U.S. to let airlines limit service animals on planes
Pits and other dog breeds often require significant socialization and responsible owners or they can be dangerous to other people and animals, like any animal. Unfortunately the same sort of person who would fake a "service animal" is the sort who should not be an owner of such a dog breed.
wavefunction··on U.S. to let airlines limit service animals on planes
The real alternative is to kennel your pets or hire someone to pet-sit.
wavefunction··on Alan Turing’s stolen OBE, doctorate recovered in Colorado
It's a small-town publication in the US. Honestly, the distinctions of British frippery hold little meaning outside of the Commonwealth.
wavefunction··on The Internet of Beefs
1992 Colorado passed Amendment 2 which specifically forbade Colorado state, county or municipal governments from recognizing homosexuals as a protected class. The amendment explicitly allowed the government of Colorado to be used to discriminate against gay people.

That's my only quibble with your list, other than Bill Clinton also signed Don't Ask Don't Tell.

wavefunction··on How did British officers live in the scorching heat of India?
First, I would say that the British should not receive the benefit of the doubt as to their behavior during the Bengal famine, given their intransigence to release grain during the Irish potato famine (and that so many Irish were forced to rely on potatoes leaving them vulnerable was another effect of British rule.)

Here's some scientific evidence that the Bengal famine of 1943 was not linked to soil moisture levels, like the previous five: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/churchill-policies-bl...

Again, the long history of callousness of the British empire towards its colonies should lead one to be skeptical of the official intent at the time.

wavefunction··on Improve Sign-Up Forms with Off-White Text Fields
https://colorpsychologymeaning.com/color-white/ https://colorpsychologymeaning.com/color-beige/

This may seem like mumbo-jumbo but colors have a psychological effect on people. Beige also conceals stains from body fluids better than white. In any case I was explaining the usage of "clinical" and not "hospital beds."

wavefunction··on Improve Sign-Up Forms with Off-White Text Fields
>it doesn’t really matter how it looks as long as it’s usable / understandable

What if how it looks makes it more usable or understandable? That's the case here with colored form fields, and if it makes the user's experience better you may be able to increase the rate of users filling out the form. At a glance the brain can intuit a form from the repetition of colored form fields whereas white on white takes more effort to understand visually. With a high volume site that depends on making spending money as quick and easy as possible, the marginal usability over white on white could be millions of dollars in marginal revenue.

wavefunction··on Improve Sign-Up Forms with Off-White Text Fields
Hospitals or "clinics" are often painted white. Clinical in this usage refers to reminiscent of a clinic.
wavefunction··on Staff emails claim Boeing 777X ‘shares Max problem’
>they need some major reform because hundreds of people are dead

>allows you today fly across the country in perfect safety

Perfect seems to be a poor choice of words here.

wavefunction··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/19/us/politics/sanctions-ole...

Maybe you should have asked for 100, or 1000. I can probably come close to 100 though.

wavefunction··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
That's why you post under a throwaway account.
wavefunction··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
Trump is also a big fan of Russia's activities outside its borders as we all know. I won't get into the "Russia if you're listening" or excluding American translators from his meetings with Putin, as we can consider one element of Russia outside its borders: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/08/26/trumps-be...
wavefunction··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
The US and Canada already possess pipelines to Mexico. https://theodora.com/pipelines/mexico_pipelines.html
wavefunction··on America’s aggressive use of sanctions endangers the dollar’s reign
US opposition to a pipeline to Russia is confined to a small group of people who are strangely very friendly to Russia on all other matters. There is no widespread or popular opposition to Germany building a pipeline to Russia in the United States.

This doesn't really treat with the dollar-denominated world economy but I wanted to point this out to differentiate the current irrational foreign policy of the US government from the subject at hand.

wavefunction··on Barr’s Encryption Push Is Decades in the Making
You and I have a natural right to self-defense, I don't know that you or I have a natural right to firearms.

I'm a firearms owner and I love to hunt but I am not sure that people have a natural right to firearms, and from observation many people should not possess them due to personal negligence surrounding the awesome responsibilities attendant with firearms usage/mis-usage.

wavefunction··on 'Break up big tech's monopoly': Smaller rivals join growing chorus
As we saw with Western business folks who were victims of Chinese industrial espionage, they would rather have whatever access they have to Chinese markets than rock the boat.
wavefunction··on The technology pushed into schools today is a threat to child development
Last Battle left an impression on my younger self that was far greater than the other books which I enjoyed but didn't experience such a visceral interaction with. Other than a weird interest in Turkish Delight despite now knowing that it is probably not as enticing as I might imagine.
wavefunction··on Autocomplete as an Interface (2015)
Perhaps you would benefit from a customizable latency on autocomplete, similar to what I've implemented when building autocomplete form fields. You don't want stuff popping up with every key press or even as someone is still typing and presumably understands what they want to type next.

If you could customize the lag after ceasing to type a key and match it to your normal typing cadence I imagine your experience and utility from IDE autocomplete would be much greater.

wavefunction··on The technology pushed into schools today is a threat to child development
Last Battle and Magician's Nephew are excellent because they provide insight into CS Lewis as an author and person. Even as a child I recognized the 'problems' with those two books and that flash of insight helped with bringing more nuance into my own thoughts. At least I hope so.
wavefunction··on Ancient Egypt may have given cats the personality to conquer the world (2017)
There are "aloof" breeds of dogs so I hate to burst your bubble about cats. My akita-pit comes over to me when she wants to be petted and leaves when she wants to leave. She might curl up next to me for a while. Then she moves over to the other couch: the one I'm not sitting on. My bulldog-pit is a cuddler and is almost always near me if she's not outside laying in the sun.
wavefunction··on Vegetation is expanding at high altitudes in the Himalayas
According to the article and other articles it _has been_ happening and is happening right now. It's gonna get very hairy.
wavefunction··on What to do if you’re stopped by the police
imagine the sovereign citizen that sets a precedent for the rest of them >even though the precedents exist and apply to all of us already
wavefunction··on What to do if you’re stopped by the police
You're pretty lucky, I was held at gunpoint for a bit because I was in the vicinity of some reported gunshots many years ago. >we were just smoking weed and drinking tho and lucked out with 1/2 the cops
wavefunction··on What to do if you’re stopped by the police
Yeah but if you're being pulled over for illegitimate reasons none of that technically applies. If it goes to court and it's your word against the police's then you are at a potential disadvantage, unless you run into a jury of your fellow proletariat.
wavefunction··on The case for being a medical conservative
I see your point but as far as I believe "anti-science skeptics" would first have to understand science before they could offer a worthy retort. Sort of like Picasso's statement about understanding the rules so that you can honestly break them.

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” ― Pablo Picasso

wavefunction··on Will alleged CIA misbehavior set Julian Assange free?
The torture was outsourced to Egypt and Syria and Guantanamo Bay contractors. The gig economy!
wavefunction··on First sighting of hot gas sloshing in galaxy cluster
I imagine the scale of the plasma's movement is enormous but do you have an idea of how "fast" the plasma is displaced? I am trying to wrap my head around the scales of the structures involved and the effects they're having on each other but it all seems so incredibly immense.
wavefunction··on Low unemployment isn’t worth much if the jobs barely pay
Very tenuously tied to not starving. There are plenty of working-class people who have to avail themselves of community food pantries and at least in my large city the homeless have access to three meals a day.

And honestly, not starving is not a great metric for a wealthy and developed country like the USA. We should demand and strive for more than that terribly low standard.

wavefunction··on Low unemployment isn’t worth much if the jobs barely pay
That or all the people working multiple of these mcjobs. If one job were enough for every American to at least provide for their basic needs and some reasonable leisures then I might be impressed by low unemployment.
wavefunction··on Think Debtors Prisons Are a Thing of the Past? Not in Mississippi
I will expand upon your point. Debt in this case is a civil matter between two private individuals. The State has an interest only, if that, in enforcing court decisions such as garnishment of wages or liens. To sentence someone to jail or prison for the crime of a civil disagreement is sick and wrong and I invite you (abstract yous) to prove me wrong via rhetoric.
