wavefunction··on Flash Is Responsible for the Internet's Most Creative Era
I'd need to see some performance metrics to come to that conclusion. "Bloated Flash site loading with a progress indicator for a few seconds" was pretty common and a huge complaint about Flash and its use on the web.
wavefunction··on Flash Is Responsible for the Internet's Most Creative Era
Naw I mean you could burn a Flash project to a CD ROM and it would auto-play when your grandma stuck it in the "coffee holder."
wavefunction··on Flash Is Responsible for the Internet's Most Creative Era
I feel like you can do pretty much everything with HTML5 and JavaScript that you could with Flash and ActionScript. The IDE for Flash had some nice UI abstractions but there's no reason that couldn't happen in a web IDE in 2019. Distributing your website like a flash file/app as a binary is one missing feature I suppose?
wavefunction··on Ask HN: How did your startup change after an exit?
Are you asserting GP shouldn't be able to comment on ageism because people don't like being told what they can or can't say about ageism?

Just some lovely irony this morning ;)

wavefunction··on ‘This Did Not Go Well’: Inside PG&E’s Blackout Control Room
I heard a working-class lady on the radio discussing the $150 of groceries in her refrigerator that were going to waste and how that's a lot of money for her family. I'd rather have that $150 than a silly opportunity to blame some old out-of-touch judge.
wavefunction··on Jack Ma Says 12-Hour Work Week Could Be the Norm
I would take colonizing Mars (with 12 hour work days) over wage slaving 12 hours a day.
wavefunction··on China Says ‘Stay Tuned’ for Retaliation over U.S. Tech Blacklist
That's a very limited concept of 'business friendly' and inaccurate in any case with regards to the US.
wavefunction··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
I don't support his methods which seem ineffective and actively net deleterious.
wavefunction··on China attacks Apple for allowing Hong Kong crowdsourced police activity app
Websites will a/b test different headlines to drive visitors to the articles and revise them during the course of the day to play off subsequent developments.

The reason they inject emotion into the headlines is because that's what people want.

wavefunction··on U.S. widens trade blacklist to include some of China’s top AI startups
From what I understand many corporate victims of Chinese industrial espionage since 2008 specifically declined to pursue prosecution for fear of what it would do to their existing or potential for business with Chinese entities and individuals.[0]

And this was despite a Justice Department that was chomping at the bit to prosecute Chinese industrial espionage. I bring this up because I think this shows why leaving weighty matters involving the security and future of your country up to corporations is a poor idea, especially when corporations are motivated solely by profit as corporatists gleefully remind us at all times.

wavefunction··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
I feel that American values would not be falling all over themselves to claim the NBA is an apolitical organization. Or at least the American values I was raised with.
wavefunction··on Dear Stack Exchange, Inc.
what do you mean by support? I google and sometimes use their content and that's it. There are other sources.
wavefunction··on Monica Cellio's account of losing her moderator status on Stack Exchange
Isn't this just a consumer-capitalist corporation maximizing its revenue potential on behalf of its owners?
wavefunction··on A rise in vegetarian options leads customers to embrace meat-free meals
The vegan/veg restaurants I've tried even in the US focused on fresh vegetables and grains in interesting and delicious ways. I've never gone to one of those places and seen fake meat though I have to admit the number of vegan/veg restaurants I've gone to in the US can be counted on one hand. I'm omnivorous by practice.
wavefunction··on A rise in vegetarian options leads customers to embrace meat-free meals
I am assuming you mean some sort of Western vegetarian food culture. Vegetarian food cultures that have lasted thousands of years feature everything you've mentioned as lacking.
wavefunction··on Khasho who? One year after gruesome murder, investors embrace Saudi Arabia again
The sanctions on North Korea were constantly violated by China though. That's a bad example. Cuba was sanctioned by the US but not the rest of the world so that's a bad example as well. I am of mixed feelings on the efficacy of sanctions but North Korea and Cuba are not examples of countries that were effectively sanctioned.
wavefunction··on RxBar co-founder Peter Rahal on life after becoming a millionaire
>You'll never hear about this in the news of course.

Why I heard that very sentiment this morning on the news.

wavefunction··on YouTube demonetizing videos where LGBTQ keywords are said
I support Youtube demonetizing whatever content they want as long as they are transparent about it

But that's because I believe in private property and freedom of association as well as personal responsibility for one's actions while it seems "conservatives" in 2019 do not from the public stances they have adopted in their political efforts.

wavefunction··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
This Judge was confirmed by the Senate which has been in Republican hands for some time.

You should go start your own Harvard and you can exclude or admit anyone you want.

wavefunction··on Pizza robot makes 300 pizzas per hour
Seems like a poor way to rationalize avoiding planning ahead. The number of open positions says nothing about the nature of the work. I can open a position for a doctor to work for me for $100 a month and while it's an "open position" it will not be and could never be filled and yet it's still a job opening. In addition some people are working multiple jobs to barely survive so again there is no defined relationship of number of jobs to number of workers or whether that's a good or a bad thing.

I would agree with you if wages had risen enough that workers could work one job and have their needs met but that won't happen any time soon, especially with robots on the horizon. The only thing that makes sense is to plan ahead.

wavefunction··on Wolfram Rule 30 Prizes
Reading the prize guidelines Wolfram gets the right to publish the proofs but that's it, which seems fair. Big tech companies perhaps have to pay more because they own the work product and it's presumably for some commercial reason?
wavefunction··on CA Governor Signs Bill Allowing College Athletes to Profit from Endorsements
Don't college athletes already have the same right to profit from endorsements as college students that non-athlete college students have? And then they get additional subsidized opportunities for being athletes?

What I am saying is that all college students have the same rights to profit from their endorsements as "college students" whether they are athletes or not.

wavefunction··on In Defense of Richard Stallman
Food is relatively accessible in the US for everyone but there are of course difficulties for people who need help knowing about the resources available to them or practical difficulties in taking advantage of those resources (lack of transportation, scheduling difficulties with children or one or more jobs, etc.)

Accommodations underneath bridges and even worse places for our homeless are unfortunately a widespread issue in the US.

wavefunction··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
This is all IMNSOHO: PHP3 was really the genesis of "PHP" which was 1997 with a decent parser, and I think the first version of what people refer to as "PHP" was PHP4 in 1999 with mainstream adoption in 2000. Many places were still doing VB6 with MS Access data stores.
wavefunction··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
I just pointed out some misconceptions about both JavaScript and PHP but some folks are indeed touchy, I will agree with you there.
wavefunction··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
I wrote some PHP on Friday.
wavefunction··on Dog-walking startup Wag raised $300M, then things got messy
JavaScript predates PHP by five years. 'Maturity' is a subjective quality in my opinion and I also think PHP is a hot mess. JavaScript is synchronous unless you specifically utilize its asynchronous parts. Asynchronous execution is possible with PHP
wavefunction··on Telegram quietly snuck its blockchain past regulators
His bombing campaign of terror was inexcusable and absolutely counterproductive to promoting his views but having read his collected writings he was surely ahead of his time as far as sussing out prevalent and significant ecological and social issues arising from our relationship to technology and the rest of the planet.
