wavefunction··on CBS censors a ‘Good Fight’ segment whose topic was Chinese censorship
I disagree with the notion that Julian Assange is a journalist. I don't find the way he goes about his activities to be commendable. I contrast his/Wikileak disclosures with the way the Snowden materials were disseminated and reported on as the the boundaries of proper and improper journalism of these subjects.
wavefunction··on Germany proposes $2,800 fine for parents skipping measles vaccination
"Anti-vaxxer" has a specific meaning. Considering that you are not an "Anti-vaxxer" I would urge you to take your self-righteousness and share it with someone who values it.

I'm not even going to go into your nonsense about mis-vaccinating or whether or not your analysis was even accurate. Follow the advice of your skilled pediatrician and the standards bodies they belong to. Good day, sir!

wavefunction··on Germany proposes $2,800 fine for parents skipping measles vaccination
These anti-vax folks believe vaccines cause autism AND that there is some massive conspiracy to give their kids autism via vaccines so a small nudge seems unlikely to much effect at all.

What we need are massive civil suits against these folks for putting other people into danger.

wavefunction··on Killer Rabbits in Medieval Manuscripts
They were mostly fancy lads and lasses from Oxford and Cambridge so I shan't be too surprised.
wavefunction··on Killer Rabbits in Medieval Manuscripts
Barbers acted as professional surgeons across the world until surgery became a formalized profession. Maybe 200 years ago at best?
wavefunction··on L.A.’s Elite on Edge as Prosecutors Pursue More Parents in Admissions Scandal
$500,000 isn't going to get you much of a building. These folks just didn't want to fork out the real dough even though some of them had the means.
wavefunction··on Facebook's Zuckerberg Preaches Privacy, but Evidence Is Elusive
Helpless? Facebook should probably change their leadership then.
wavefunction··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
A genius would have built up successors to take over the system or designed it in such a way that it could be maintained lest he be hit by a bus suddenly. It is definitely a good story for tech.
wavefunction··on Are the dead taking over Facebook?
My younger brother (deceased now 10 years) is still one of my LinkedIn contacts. It's not so bad as other platforms since I don't interact with LinkedIn much but it hurt a great deal at first and LinkedIn had no mechanism to retire or close his profile.

^^^^^ And to pile on to this sentiment a currency will only hold value if someone is willing to accept it. Launching a stable coin is so they can get around KYC and money-exchange regulations. Given their enabling of terrorism and propaganda in the past I assume we'll be soon reading about this system and all the malfeasance associated with it. facebook has never displayed a mature sense of responsibility or duty to the societies they impact.
wavefunction··on Underwater Exploring Is Banned in Brazil (1985)
Romans didn't possess longboats which were capable of sea travel as well as riverine navigation. Romans stuck to coastal waters.
wavefunction··on Underwater Exploring Is Banned in Brazil (1985)
Polynesians had and still have extremely sophisticated stellar and solar navigation techniques (as well as deep observational knowledge of oceans and marine life) that far exceeded recorded European techniques until the advent of tools like astrolabes and sextants in the 1700s, as far as the extent of travel distances. There has been growing evidence of Polynesian contact with South America, including the presence of sweet potatoes (South American origin) which may have just dispersed somehow westward over the Pacific as seeds. But chicken bones (a South Asian origin) have been radio carbon dated to the 1300s in Chile. And a Polynesian settlement in the Auckland islands in the sub-antarctic dating to the 13th century has been found.
wavefunction··on Facebook's Email-Harvesting Practice Is Under Investigation in N.Y.
My point is if you err on the side of ethics you likely would never need to worry about the law. I am fully confident the vast majority of people can determine when they're doing something unethical. I am not saying people will not undertake actions they know to be unethical, but avoiding unethical actions will protect that person from exposure to legal liability.
wavefunction··on Facebook's Email-Harvesting Practice Is Under Investigation in N.Y.
What's wrong with introspection about what you're doing on an ethical level? There's no legal standard involved so you don't have to be a lawyer, just a bit more thoughtful.

wavefunction··on Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5B by FTC Over Privacy Issues
or using the plaintext passwords to extract a user's contacts when hashing it into a database would prevent facebook from impersonating that user and logging in to access their non-facebook social graph?
wavefunction··on Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5B by FTC Over Privacy Issues
how about extracting a user's contacts with their plaintext passwords that would usually be hashed into a database (at least in my professional experience) and thus unusable by facebook?
wavefunction··on The wave of unicorn IPOs
Buying every home is one thing but maintaining them too?
wavefunction··on The Brave Browser Will Pay You to Surf the Web
That's the basic setup of the Brave browser. You get shown a few Brave ads every so often and you can automatically "tip" sites by setting your preferences. It's kind of like Spotify where whatever you "earn" during a month gets distributed based on the amount of time you spend on a site. You can also not tip anyone but the Brave tokens expire after a while for the end-user if not used. This is just my understanding from using the Brave browser. I should note that I'm working for a startup in this space that is pursuing a different model but I support any and all efforts to put the Internet economy back in the hands of creators and average people.

I'm on a small team (5 engineers) that is GDPR compliant so no PII is logged. It's not hard if you care.
