just a waveform, collapsing in on itself

wavefunction··on New Logo and Identity for Library of Congress
Libraries are serving their communities all sorts of media beyond just books.
wavefunction··on Rave.dj – an artificially intelligent mash-up machine
It would be pretty trivial to add key-matching to this thing but like you say that wouldn't come close to everything a good dj or live band is doing during a performance with an audience.
wavefunction··on Tabs vs. spaces and other holy wars
In my highly opinionated...opinion it's far easier to transform a tab into 1 space, 2 spaces, 3 spaces or n spaces than to attempt the reverse for coding while still preserving the underlying indentation.
wavefunction··on Those Who Can Do, Can’t Teach
As the child of two teachers I vehemently disagree with what I consider your inaccurate and wholly unsupported supposition.
wavefunction··on The Student Debt Problem Is Worse Than We Imagined
I consider it foolhardy. Can you imagine our most important foreign and domestic policy being set by people who center their lives both moral and emotional around 'Keeping up with the Kardashians'? Or getting a bunch of antivaxxers in there?

There are plenty of decent Americans but we also have too many that are juvenile, superficial, ignorant and aggressively incurious.

wavefunction··on The Approval Economy
There were no plantation gentlemen, just slave owners
wavefunction··on The Vanishing Idealism of Burning Man
You can find much of what you might find at Burning Man in other places in the world. I think it's amazing primarily to people who've never been or aren't regularly exposed to those things.
wavefunction··on Why Prosperity Has Increased but Happiness Has Not
The 70s had a fair amount of pollution and crime above what we experience now. I'm guessing the OP didn't graduate with decades of student loans though. Or a five year loan for that car of theirs.
wavefunction··on Bull Market Hits a Milestone: 3,453 Days – Most Americans Aren’t at the Party
I would be replying to the original poster if I were replying to the original poster, wouldn't I?

I was replying to the post with a claim about EUR and USD "relative values."

wavefunction··on Bull Market Hits a Milestone: 3,453 Days – Most Americans Aren’t at the Party
Usually, yes. However you can substitute lower quality ingredients, or you can implement a "shrinkflation" strategy:

https://steemit.com/money/@dedicatedguy/shrinkflation-sellin...

You can also manipulate prices at scale where you raise the price of some goods in the CPI basket while lowering others keeping "inflation" or CPI "low." If the marginal profit on the goods you're lowering was already relatively high and the marginal profit on the goods you are raising was low, you could find a point of arbitrage where you come out ahead on profit without moving the needle on inflation.

wavefunction··on Bull Market Hits a Milestone: 3,453 Days – Most Americans Aren’t at the Party
It could be (which I believe) that both the USD and EUR are worth less to real goods and services while the USD is relatively higher than the Euro.
wavefunction··on 'Acoustic attack' report on US diplomats in Cuba is flawed, neurologists say
There are no good guys.
wavefunction··on HUD Files Housing Discrimination Complaint Against Facebook
That's just a municipal ordinance and not a Constitutional result. It's not much of a result.

I live in Austin and support the Drafthouse's lighthearted attempt to offer women an opportunity to enjoy themselves by themselves.

wavefunction··on Hawaiian pizza
Taco al pastor and it's the result of Lebanese immigrants to Mexico bringing the doner kebab/shawarma "trompo" and applying it to pork.

wavefunction··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
In USAmerica (at least) you can sue anyone over anything. That doesn't imply a legal obligation per se with regard to whatever your claims might be.
wavefunction··on They’re Falsely Accused of Shoplifting, but Retailers Demand Penalties
It can be extortion, if it's a SLAPP

wavefunction··on Google Needs to Come Clean About Its Chinese Plans
>Google only pulled search business out of China. adsense/adwords/maps works fine in China

That's "google search" if just by a different name

>f2

see part 1

>f3

Google returning is contradicted by p1+p2

>f4

what does that have to do with p1-3 though

wavefunction··on IBM Has a Watson Dilemma
They're competitors in the sense that neither are worth anything to the average medical Doctor at this point.

I don't mean this as a disparagement, merely as a dispassionate observation. Doctors need alerts about contra-indications of drugs they and their patients' other doctors have prescribed more than they need AI-derived diagnoses, for example.

wavefunction··on Code review review is the manager’s job
On my team we're all managers. We manage ourselves and our output, and we manage our team, team's output and each other by supporting and assisting each other. So from that standpoint I agree. I don't see the need for dedicated managers though I do value our dedicated scrum/agile coach though, who encourages all of that.
wavefunction··on Bullshit-sensitivity predicts prosocial behavior
That specific example seems more like some combination of persistence and power is required: great power suddenly and temporarily expressed could cut through stone while a weak power expressed over a long-enough time frame would have the same effect. On it's face it's only a partially true statement and thus is effectively 'BS' when presented as an aphorism.

As well, it anthropormorphizes the effect of gravity on water as 'persistence.' It might serve as a fine metaphor for human persistence but that's all.

wavefunction··on From Father to Son, Last Words to Live by (2007)
You can enlist at 17 and US Army BCT is only 8 weeks long so we may just be a few months from that mark.

The only way I can reconcile the ongoing nightmare of The War on Terror is that most civilians in USA don't even think about it and there's so much money being made by the MIC.

wavefunction··on She Had a Genius Idea: Air-Conditioned Doghouses, then the City Showed Up
The smell of concentrated excrement is one of the charms of big city life.
wavefunction··on Children born to spies in Canada should not be handed citizenship, says Ottawa
>not citizens

Well the problem just clears itself up

wavefunction··on FCC admits it was never actually hacked
Net neutrality is the origin and the genesis of the Internet.

It's baked into TCP/IP with packet agnosticism the central and guiding principle.

You've given into partisan ignorance and I can't fault you: it's typical of people all around the world to wrap themselves in comforting ignorance lest they be forced to exercise even a small portion of their brains.

*And thanks for finally coming clean in your own regard. I realized who I replied to after I posted my own reply to your 'content.'

wavefunction··on FCC admits it was never actually hacked
Why would he have posted such trollish pictures of himself if he weren't?

He got real serious suddenly when that nutter threatened his family.

wavefunction··on Ask HN: What is the most unethical thing you've done as a programmer?
More of like an empty self-serviing justification for great evil against your fellow humans, if such you can still be considered.
wavefunction··on Cities’ Offers for Amazon Base Are Secrets Even to Many City Leaders
I can understand some of the fears of her constituents who purchased houses on large lots and have seen houses in those neighborhoods torn down for multi-family dwellings.

More density is something Austin requires but that of course involves transforming the nature of neighborhoods and whether that's gentrification of the East Side with yuppie condos replacing traditional black and hispanic neighborhoods or tasteful (imo) multi-family residences in traditionally genteel white suburban neighborhoods, it's something out of everyone's hands.

People in Austin and other cities are resistant to change for a host of reasons both legitimate and not. Change is inevitable though. Fortunately I'm not a native and I don't have strong ties to the area so I'm preparing to move back home before the next 1.5 million people move here in the next decade. I'm planning to hold onto my relatively large lot and house and rent it for entirely selfish reasons, though.

It's the pace of change that locals can't handle, and part of it is all the outside money transforming the city for its own profit, the city and its neighborhoods and people be-damned.

wavefunction··on Energy Saved, Sleep Lost: The Unintended Consequences of LED Lighting
Amber lights are conducive to sleep since blue wavelength light messes with circadian rhythms so they might be useful on stretches of roadway that feature long-haul driving and late-night traffic like larger thorough fares but I think they have a very deleterious effect on animals and plants.

One of the things I love about the suburban neighborhood I live in is how dark it is at night (relatively speaking, not like being in a true night-time darkness in the wilderness).

wavefunction··on Apple has removed Infowars podcasts from iTunes
I would have more sympathy if American conservatives hadn't removed the Fairness Doctrine.[0]

I would have more sympathy if AM radio wasn't dominated by conservative talk radio and elaborate syndication organizations.

I would have more sympathy if you weren't equating vile propaganda about 'crisis actors' and 'schools of thought.

I might have more sympathy if Fox News and Sinclair broadcasting were being told what to talk about by the government.
